  • Quakeworld vs quake online feel.

Since I've been jamming quake for almost 2 months now I've noticed that there is a different feel to the quakeworld clients then to the quake clients.

Fuhquake seems to be really tight and fast.

When I play online using Fuhquake on the ASE servers it seems like milliseconds matter.

When I play using qrack, joequake, proquake, using any of the servers on the quakeone.com server lists it seems like there is a half second delay for everything that happens.

So, I started my own server to test locally and noticed that it feels fast like quakeworld on my local box. So I atrributed this to ping and then checked the feel on different pinged servers.

Still, even the fastest server at 32 ping still had a half second delay in the time I press the buttons (movement or shooting) and the actual event happening.

Fuhquake never has this feel. It is a quakeworld client so I guess that its going to have a slightly different feel but I don't think I should have the delays. I still play with qrack on bomber.quakeone.com because I can get myself to "adjust" like playing with a 180-250 ping feels. Yet even when I play with those pings on a quakewold the dleays in my shots still seem shorter then best pings on qrack.

So I'm am wondering if there is any setting I am not putting in right on qrack that will get rid of the delay.

I am on windows xp and running a 3.2 ghz machine with 4 gbram and I have a 256 MB vidcard that is an ATI that runs similar framerates/performance to the geforce 7600. Runs FEAR and Quake4 pretty smoothly.

One of the possible culprits is that I am using a wireless connection but it doesn't effect quakeworld's feel.

So I read through the different sections on this site to see what I could find.

Some talk about video settings and what not to gain latency thru framerate. Which is something I used to do in quake 3 and kinpin. But even when I have the lowest settings with mosaic textures I still get a delay in Pro, joe, or qrack.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Quakeworld uses prediction. This means that a rocket fired occurs approximately when you press the button.

In regular Quake, there isn't prediction so a rocket fired only occurs once the server has received the fact you have fired, so there is delay.

The delay is dependent on your ping and is typically 1/10th to 1/20th of a second. (The time it takes for the server to receive the message), but since client/server is a 2 way street, the perceived time different is about double that.

Switching between Quake and Quakeworld servers always takes an adjustment, hehe

One argument for Quakeworld is that shots are fired pretty much when you press the button. The downside of this is that the delay instead of being ON YOUR END is on the opponent's end! When the opponent sees your rocket, it has already had a head start equal your ping, so there is less opportunity to react to your opponent's attack.

Whenever I play Quakeworld, it takes about 30 minutes to adjust! And then if I switch back, it takes me 10 minutes to adjust back, heheh

Quakeworld and Quake 3 movement is affected by FPS to some degree due to client side movement. In regular Quake, framerate has no meaningful role in movement because it is server-side.

QW sucks, you can't play RA for shit because of those reasons Baker said. The prediction messes everything up.

The only thing I liked about QW was how smooth /pushlatency <insert ping> did.

I will find you... it's only a matter of time.

Not all of us hate it, it's just these NetQuakers just got their asses handed to them by Baker and wanted to take their anger on something.

I never tried QuakeWorld but I have darkplaces so give me an address and I'll link to it

This is a netquake forum, not a quakeworld forum.

Although that's supposedly changing, which is nice.

The forum has more emphasis on Quake than Quakeworld, but there are plenty of Quakeworld oriented downloads in the download section.

There is very little difference between Quake and Quakeworld on broadband, it is more a matter of what mods/servers are available.

In my experience, it depends more on what type of play a player likes. I think Quakeworld has the edge for vanilla deathmatch. And Team Fortress plays very well in Quakeworld.

But games like Rocket Arena and Clan Arena, the effects of Quakeworld's prediction on gameplay are detrimental.

I prefer whatever server is running a map I like I enjoy playing UltraV or ZTNDM3 or another good custom map on any server, Quake or Quakeworld, over any server that is running only the standard ID maps I've played for 6 years.

I like UltraV and Ztndm3 -- 1 on 1, teams, ffa. I like FFA on DM6 and *most* custom maps, but I hate E1M7 and other variants of E1M7 (the one with slime in the middle instead of lava, whatever map that is) and I like it better with no quad. Aerowalk is fun and basewalk is fun.

There is or was a Team Fortress style server that ran in FFA mode (bizarre!) but it was a lot of fun and I enjoyed blowing away the newbies as fast I could fire. It ran maps like fragtwn7. (I'll have to check and see if that server is still around.)
