  • Footstepping...

    So, I've been playing q1/q3/q4/hl2/css etc....

    Among the later games they all have footstep sounds. Sure, whishy-washy.
    But do you think CAx should have an admin-controlled footstep sound option.
    Meaning, it is controlled by the admin, and available to all players reguardless of their .exe of choice. For the newb it would help "think" in a 3d space, for the leet would add to strategy (unless your just gonna 2step suffle in the quad doorway!), but I thought I'd ask the players their perspective. Want, could want, optional, who f'n-cares, no fuck that i like the glass-like glide of quake1 footing.. etc ????

    Respond how u want, all will be accepted good bad or ugly..

    not only would the sound itself be very annoying to me, it would also take away from the coolness of prediction shots..

      i wouldnt put it in; since all newer games have it, it would just reduce the distinctiveness of quake and change something fundamental about the game

          Since it would be the admin's call, might as well ad the option to enable it. It doesn't have to be a major feature or even documented on the server anywhere... for future servers using CAX, gamers coming from the games where footsteps are used might like that.

          I say add it and let the admin decide!

            im not trying to newbify the game (if u can call it that since all other games have footstep sounds) but thought id get an average player's opinion...

              arent prediction shots when you chase some one a predict there movements?

              at that didtance u wont hear the foot steps.. > 500 units...

              i think even so if u can hear them u knew they were there!

                at that didtance u wont hear the foot steps.. > 500 units...

                i think even so if u can hear them u knew they were there!
                true.. ah well it may work out nice.. it may not.. i guess its one of those thing u can't really comment on until u've experienced it

                  footstepping has been done already on dpmod and I like it. Forces players to walk slowly to reduce noise.

                    yes be done FO SHo!... true im not re-inventing the wheel... just not yet..

                    no C*S im not talking varied speed / sound...

                    Okay, lets say everyone is dead and its just u and the other guy left.... every1 is saying in their heads "hurry the fuck up!!!" pitter pater of little feet may speed things up.... (imho R.A. footsteping is moot ) but spawn and hear sneaky sneakers behind you, and u know that your gonna be raped... which could add to the strategy... ??

                      Footstepping slows down the game. People like quake because it is a fast-paced game. CA is already all about prefire, you add in footsteps it just makes pre-firing even more prominent. I say no to footstepping; even if you give as an admin feature, the admin might turn it on and forget to turn it off when he leaves.

                        Hi Rook,

                        Personally I think it's an interesting idea and doesn't detract too much from the original feel and gameplay of quake*, however, I would suggest it should be off by default when playing on a server but should be an optional toggle for server admins to turn on/off (or possibly players to vote-on/off) so that all players have it/do not have it thus ensuring an even playing field. It should also be available in single player mode, which would be especially useful for newcomers, to toggle on/off.

                        Another possible feature to consider - crouching? With a similar approach to footsteps it might be an interesting option to add in. [Monty puts on his flame proof suit..] Put down the guns guys it was just an idea

                          Your probably right on the pre-fire point, where as, quake er i mean DM3, is too small for footsteps. I count 14+ corners/doorway instances on that map.
                          hmm.... but i think u'd have to try b4 u buy it... most step sounds are drowned by gunfire. Seems like its not gonna make the cut for CA

                            r00k, I have tried it in games like Q2 and Q3, and it definitely slows down the game. For most of the time during CA it wouldn't make a difference because people are flying around the place, but once you're the last man it's 1v1 or 1v2 or 1v3, going silent is a very important part of the game. And if you have to walk instead of run to go silent, wow, that would be super slow.
