  • Looking For A Particular Map

For the life of me, as a old (i mean old, don't ask!) Quake player, I cannot remember the name of the map that I used to play with a buddy of mine.

I'll try my best to describe it.

First off, it was from an expansion pak, one weapon that always locks up the game is that "Thor" hammer.

A demo used to play the map with John Romero and some of the dev team playing.

    It's a DM map.

The map layout was like a ramped map, mostly outdoors with an open space that if you fall off the ledge, you go SPLAT!

I think on the second level of the map area contained a shield icon that protects you from damage at a certain degree and hurts the shooter as well, it sits on a ledge.

Top level had a building with a teleporter that when stepped thru, straight ahead is a quad power up. Also from inside the top level building is where that hammer is found.

Outside of the top level building is a pentagram sitting on a ledge.

The ramps leads up to I think 4 levels high.

    Rings a bell anyone?

    Thanks

    Maybe DM7. Best guess.

Although possibly Q1edge, although I don't think that map has a pent.

      Nope, not it.

I'm trying my best to describe it. This one doesn't have a ledge where you can fall off into open space and die at the bottom.

The is at the top level of the map next to a building, not in the water.

I'll keep trying to find it.

      Thanks anyway,

Ok got the name of the expansion pack "Scourge of Armagon" and one of those maps has what I mentioned, so I am wondering if there are maps from that expansion pack that I can download individually w/o having the need to install the first pack?

Aha, ok, this is the screenshot of the map I am looking for...

            Anyone remember this now?

If so, now I need to find a download link for this map. (crosses fingers)

Ok, in that map, there sit what used to be the thor hammer, but since I don't have that expansion, the hammer naturally doesn't show up. But instead of the hammer (which I hate anyway since it locks up the game and very bugged weapon), is there a way script wise that I can put the shock gun in it's place?

Look for that small yellow circular area where the hammer used to be....

Is there a way to put the shock gun in it's place and have it spinning just like the hammer used to be?

                  Any help is appreciated.

Well, you can solve that problem for $4.95.

If you want to manually edit the map, that can be done to change what weapon appears. But you should ask that question @ Func_Msgboard http://www.celephais.net/board which is where the Quake mappers live.

They always answer "easy" questions (in my experience) and this one is rather easy for them.

                        Hi,

This is sounds all very familiar and I think you could be refering to the Painkeep expansion pack which was great fun, one of my favourite mods and I still play from time to time. In painkeep I think the map you're after was called Pkn9 "The Edge of Oblivion" and was included in the 'nothing' set of maps. Elsewhere, as Baker has already pointed out, this map is also called 'hipdm1'.

With regard to entity/weapon replacement, I also needed some of the original Painkeep maps converted to a more standard format and fortunately a very helpful [and talented] mapper called ORL was kind enough to do these for me, as part of a Quake server project I'm trying to coordinate, and I'm sure if you ask one of the mappers really nicely they might do this one for you. I understand from ORL that it's not a terribly difficult thing to do yourself but if you are intending to work on the Painkeep version you would have to replace all the painkeep entities (Chain Lightning Gun, Autosentries, beartraps, Can o Beans, Gravity Wells, etc) in order to 'normalise' it. Hope this helps

                        Kind regards

                        Monty

If you run the map on a cr-mod server you can modify the items without changing the map itself.. you need to be admin level 0 and observer to do this tho.. see the cr-mod manual on how to do it..

If you want to change the map itself.. then u can open up the hipdm1.bsp into a map editor (i recommend QuArK) and edit the entity list. find the instances of the hipnotic weapons and artifacts and replace them with any of the standard items listed bellow. Then save it (u might wanna rename the map) and your done.

                          //standard weapons
                          "classname" "weapon_supershotgun"
                          "classname" "weapon_nailgun"
                          "classname" "weapon_supernailgun"
                          "classname" "weapon_grenadelauncher"
                          "classname" "weapon_rocketlauncher"
                          "classname" "weapon_lightning"
                          //standard artifacts
                          "classname" "item_artifact_envirosuit"
                          "classname" "item_artifact_super_damage"
                          "classname" "item_artifact_invulnerability"
                          "classname" "item_artifact_invisibility"

I think i might have this map already without all the expansion only stuff, and with appropriate replacements for the missing items.

Edit: nevermind, there's not Lightning gun where the Mjolnir Hammer used to be.

Well which is better? I already used Quark and got this done...

Not entirely a perfect placement, but that was the only thing I wanted to add into the map, the lightening gun.

So I imagine it'll cause peeps who may want to play DM with me will end up redownloading this particular map or in some cases they may not be able to download it.

Sounds like cr-mod is the best way to go, so this should help not cause a new map download and keep the map as is intact, correct?
