  • Quake Multiplayer & Hook Help!

    Hi guys/gals,
This is my first post, and I hope any of you, could help me answer my questions.

I am going to host a LAN party in my own house with my old buddies. My old buddies are Quake-Fan before 3Dfx went down.

It was memoriable & cherisable moments, I would want to host it again.

I have freshly install my Quake1 (DOS) onto my Windows2000 Professional (non/not SP4). My Server is running on Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM and SATA harddrive. (I know its a little "OVERKILL" for a simple hosting game like Quake, that only need Pentium 100 Mhz and 16 MB Ram.. lolx)

My concern is, that on 24 October 2009, We would like to host the DOS type multiplayer with HOOK!

Yes, original quake game, but only with Hook Addons.
I used to have those, back in my days, where I type in DOS:
    Quake -game hook -listen 16

But I dont have that hook folder or that hook files anymore.

I would appreciate, if someone... somebody... who has only hook files, would send those hook files, to [email protected]

I need this urgently. I understand that Quake have now evolved into from Quake to GLQuake to Pro Quake to Quakeworld...etc etc.

But me and my buddies, preferred Quake/GLQuake, the dos version. A Simple LAN Party, consist of 12 players, dedicated Server that support of grappling hook.

Everything is original Quake, but Hook as an addon. Therefore, I would diffinately appreciate if I could get those HOOK files to work. Please help me out.

    Regards,
    Panties

Download RuneQuake (download) and vote the runes off and the hook on.

vote-runes is the "runes off" command and vote-hook is the "hook-on" command.

It is better to continue asking about this at Rune Central to get exact instructions at the place where the mod is maintained.

Quake didn't actually come with a grappling hook, the grappling hook was a popular modification that ended up on tons of servers (CTF, etc., etc.)

Hey baker, do you have msn? you can add me... [email protected].

Im an old school fan of Quake. I played it with my 33.6 kbps Modem, during those time...

In my days, I used to play CTF. Red Flag VS Blue Flag.
I plan to download that addons too, but just wondering, is that HARD to set-it-up?
I played CTF but never get the chance to play Threewave CTF.

I would like to have CTF that has blue flag and red flag, for dos...

whats threewave? should I go ahead and download that? or no?

sorry for my noob questions.. hehe...

I don't use IM. If I do I get 50 people bothering me.

                  Here is ThreeWave stuff:

Tangent: I admit I love the hook-toggle in Runequake. The only CTF I ever played (back in the day) lacked the hook-toggle command. Is there a CTF with hook-toggle in it?

Ctf.clanhdz.com has belly hook with +hook in practice mode. Doesn't work in match. If you learned to use the impulse 22 hook, you'd never want to use that shitty runequake belly hook again.

And to the dude hosting the LAN, if you're wanting to play CTF, use Threewave like Baker said. I dunno if Rook has his leet Clanring version (the one on ctf.clanhdz.com) up to download but if he did, it'd probably have everything you want and more.

And please stop referring to all this DOS shit. There's NetQuake, the original that ran in DOS, and Quakeworld, which is some inferior attempt at making Quake better for network play. ProQuake and Qrack are the improved evolution of the old quake.exe found on the retail disc.

                          Hi Panix,
Yeah, sorry for all this DOS stuff. But Im a DOS fan.. we usually almost ran all our old games, in DOS in the past.

Anyway, for this LAN party, what do you recommend? QuakeWorld?NetQuake? ProQuake?
They are confusing and I never use them before. Since I am confortable in DOS and I was an "expert" in DOS networking in the past... thats why I use DOS to host Quake.

However, I dont mind using the newer ones, if you could point me in the right direction, then I be glad to use QuakeWorld or NetQuake or ProQuake or whatever-Quake they have today...

If i could remember correctly, mine was.. Quake.exe -listen 16 -dedicate -map e1m1

and Im planning to run in Windows2000. I wanted to run Linux, but I dont have Linux background what-so-ever, so a simple Win2K should do a trick.

Plus, I am going to test on the VMWARE enviroment before I actually put it into the real Physical computer.

That way, I could understand and compare the old DOS quake, with WinQuake/Quakeworld or ProQuake or whatever..

                          Guide my path, Panix...

                          Regards,
                          Panties

quakeworld and netquake are types, proquake is a client (.exe)

Like panix said, you'll want either proquake or qrack, I believe they're both capable of hosting dedicated servers. Use the command line switches you remembered in a shortcut to the Exe's, and run them in windows -they'll run in a dos window just fine.

Dos was great, but this is 2009, the original quake has evolved just like windows (thanks to some great programmers here)
