  • Show me the way....please

hello all first post here. If this is in the wrong place please forgive my mistake. Ive looked over this site for about 3 hours now looking for answers to my questions but no luck.

I just bought quake for $0.06 on ebay! I've been looking through site after site trying to get caught up on what i've missed over the past years and luckily found this site.

What I'd like to do is LAN old style CRMOD quake. Based on what ive read thus far I downloaded proquake. And that is as far as i have gotten.

Where can i get the CRMOD?
only link i found is dead i think.

Can windows and linux quakes connect? (i forget)

basic setup for 4+ computers to connect with new mods?

Im sorry for all the silly questions its just been so so long.

    thanks in advance

Megazoid's very kindly hosted it here on his Quaketerminus site but I don't know how long it's likely to be there so grab it while you can

    Usually yes

Usually 1 server with good comms is assigned as the Quake server to which the Quake clients connect. If you do not wish to play on the machine allocated as the server add -dedicated to the command line on the server. There are a number of new mods you could use but if you are looking for something a bit different I would suggest Painkeep, RQuake and RuneQuake might be a good place to start. Some mods are server side (such as RQuake and RuneQuake) whereas others require client side installation. For client side mods it's usually a case of putting the relevant mod files in a folder (eg. modx) within your quake filesystem and then adding the -game modx to your quake command line.

    Hope this helps

thanks so much for the link! have two players connected with each other so far. so got the basics done. thanks for the quick reply

is there away to turn off auto switch of weapons.

and can i get a refresh on what an autoexec.cfg file does? i added a few lines into the config.cfg file but i recall having one in the past.

i had winquake running ok with the edited config.cfg after putting proquake on it added lines to the config, but it seems that i had to re add things. like command to keep the demos from starting up, menu_main i think?

      thanks again!

p.s. 1v1'd with the brother today like old times! So much fun!!!

        and one more thing.

I was talking to some friends about this and they want in on it.

is it possible to have a dedicated server on a dynamic ip address?

i set my laptop up to be a dedicated lan server. Since im going through a router i tought it would be no problem since i can share through the network.

well it works great for a little bit then says cant bind to the ip addy and gives me the ip address. so i gave the laptop the address as opposed to obtaining automatically and much better results. but i can not connect to the internet after giving the laptop the same ip address it couldnt bind to before.

anyway to get 2 comps on lan and more on wan?

        thanks in advance again!

Not sure about this but you could look in to using the Bestweapon command. I'm sure one of the quake experts will chip in here with some switch for it.

Glad you're having fun. The autoexec.cfg file is usually used to house a series of commands and/or settings that you can implement to personalise your quake experience. Looking at your problem, I'd first check whether the config.cfg and autoexec.cfg are write protected as that's a common cause of settings not "sticking" . Also check that what you're setting in one cfg file is not being overwritten/reset in the other.

          Kind regards

Not in standard Quake, for sure. It's built into the game logic (QuakeC progs.dat). In CRMOD, possibly but I have no idea. I know RuneQuake, for example, only automatically switches you to a non-explosive weapon.

Dyndns can do this. No idea how to works exactly, but FOQ did it here earlier this year. I have seen other servers use it in the past too.

            It is free.

Yes, definitely. Use a dynamic DNS site like dyndns as Baker suggested.

The idea of dyndns and related services is that you run a dyndns client (on your PC or even on your router, many firmwares support that) that tells the DNS server your current IP every x minutes. You don't need this technically (you could also tell your friends your public IP each time they want to connect), but in the long term it is less annoying.

If you aren't connected to the internet directly (read: you're behind the NAT of a DSL/cable router), you'll also have to forward the Quake port (26000 udp I guess) to your box. This is done in the web interface of the router and easiest when you assign your box a static private IP. Try it, it's not too hard.

thanks for all the help all!!

the dyndns.com is a bit confusing.

I signed up for the free dynamic host dns.

signed up for a dns. tre.dvrdns.org

and im confused where to go next. when i start a server on the laptop it still shows the same ip.

                sorry for all the questions.

You need to run the dyndns client. If your router doesn't have one integrated, install this one on your PC.

In both cases, you gotta enter the credentials of your dyndns account and the client will tell dyndns your current public IP so they know where to point your domain (tre.dvrdns.org) to.

If you have a router: did you forward the quake port already (see my last post)?

Don't worry about the private IP that your Quake server shows, it has little to do with this. The port forwarding I just mentioned takes care of that problem.

To avoid problems as a result of using an ancient client and old legacy stuff that might have come from your e-bay purchase, here is a general guide to get your client setup properly:

For this example I will use proquake400 but the principle applies to any client..

                    - Create a new folder, say: c:\quake
                    - Create a subfolder c:\quake\id1
                    - Create a subsubfolder c:\quake\id1\maps
                    - Download and unzip glpro400 to c:\quake
                    - Copy pak0.pak and pak1.pak from your e-bay purchase to c:\quake\id1
                    --> c:\quake\id1\pak0.pak
                    --> c:\quake\id1\pak1.pak
                    - Make sure all files and folders in c:\quake (including subfolders) are NOT marked as "read-only" (files copied from cd-rom are usually marked as such)
                    - For linux platforms -> make sure all filenames are in lowercase

Basically this is all that is needed but you could optionally use my config files and customize those as needed..

                    - Download and unzip this file to some temporary folder and follow instructions in the readme.txt (any .cfg files can be viewed and edited in notepad or similar .txt editor)
                    - play! (run the client executable, glpro400.exe in this case)

If you are into teamplay then i'd recommend downloading these .loc files and unzipping them to c:\quake\id1\locs folder.

i can forward the quake port 26000 i think. ive done it before with other programs.

That's good, you should be ready then. Start a listening server on the correct interface and tell your firend to connect.

(You should have sth like -listen 8 -ip <your_local_static_ip_here> in the server command line to be sure the server binds to the correct IP -- but unless you're using multiple NICs chances are very high that the -ip part isn't really needed.
