ok so when i try to connect to my dedicated server i get this error.

    read error
    host_error: cl_readfromserver: lost server connection

thats when i type "connect tre.dvrdns.org"

if it type the local ip addy it connects fine. my friends arent available at this moment but i fear they will get the same error.

Must forward ALL UDP ports. Not just 26000. Sad but true. This is the original Quake and the network code isn't refined.

That is the issue you are encountering.
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

nevermind there are 65,535. so i forwarded 0-65535 and bam it worked!

before i did this i was getting the can not bind to <ip addy>

          let see if this helps

Is this the server that can't bind or the client?

If the server and you are using ProQuake as the server, try adding -oldnet to the command line and try again.

If this is your client, it is vital to know exactly what you are using as a client.

I justed start up wqpro as dedicated and it ran for an extended period of time without issue.

Could be your operating system looking for better wireless connections, power save settings, sleep settings or something else ...

Some guy running a server last year encountered some issue like that where every 24 hours +/- his server was no longer up and he kept trying to determine what was going on.

Could also be your mod, possibly. And it isn't entirely possible to rule out an engine bug, but really the odds of that one seem rather slim on the server side because that code doesn't get changed.

You cannot use your external domain name yourself. That doesn't mean that it doesn not work for your friend though, have him try it.

The explanation of why you can't use the it yourself is somwhat complicated, let's just say that a packet had to travel in a loop (your pc --> your router --> inet --> your router --> your pc) if you use the external IP (and that's what using the DNS name means, remember). Most home routers do NOT allow this.

Simply use the local IP and tell your friends to use the DNS-name.

thanks for all of your help all!

I think i've got everything working other than the random server closing when no one is in the room.

                            Glad to hear that!

I also doubt that your remaining issue is an engine bug btw. I've also messed with NQ servers lately and I've been running a proQuake 3.99 server on my dedicated linux box for about 10 days now. I'm quite sure it's empty >99% of the time and it's still running.
