  • What do you use for Multiplayer?

Hell, I am Clonehunter (The One and Only, and by that I mean I simply use this username just about everywhere), and I am new to Quake One.

I would really just like to now how people do Quake Multiplayer around here. I'm sure people still play, but with what, um, tools? Vanilla Quake? A Port? What is it? That is really all I have to ask about right now, and so that concludes this post...

Thank You or No Thank You in advance.

ProQuake, Qrack, Joequake, EngineX and Darkplaces. First three are the most used for online multiplayer.

Darkplaces -> Single player + Online Co-Op - as it makes Quake gorgeous especially with it's various texture enhancement options.
QRack -> Multiplayer - as it allows the higher polygon models + high res textures however WITHOUT the texture enhancements - so you get the high FPS.

Darkplaces does let you disable the normal mapping ect, however even doing that I still get 25+ more FPS using QRack for online. I like QRack as it supports the model replacements. Others likely do, just I gave QRack a try and it worked perfectly for me, so stuck with it.

I use qrack mostly because i love the features, but i switch to proquake from time to time, and Darkplaces i only use that for offline play and coop servers because it has the best graphics.

I currently use ProQuake just for playing, and unless I'm not doing it right, I can't seem to find any Quake Servers. I'm guessing that thogh has to be Direct IP connect or something.

on the first page of quakeone.com in the right-hand corner there is a list of active servers that lets you know how many people are on, there is a more extensive list Real Time Server Browser (Work In Progress) <- this is also linked right under the mini list but i would bookmark it.. My safest bet for finding people online that are playing is by going to quake.shmack.net:26000 that server usually has the most people and a few of them will play other mods with you.

So in the search query I type in the server's DNS line and then it connects, loads, and plays? Well it did the first two, but how long does it take the load, or am I still doing something wrong. (I typed in the DNS for the server on the top of the list.)
