  • Multiplayer w/other pc

Hello all. I'm new here. I have been reading posts about joining servers for multiplayer gaming. My uncle and I are old quake1 gamers wishing to get a game going between our pc's.

We both have quake1 installed. We both purchased through Steam. GL quake is available to play. I had to upgrade to Darkplaces due to my video card drivers. Would my uncle have to upgrade to Darkplaces as well to connect to mine?

Using the tcpip, how do we find out what our IP address is to give to the other to join?

Is there a tutorial for users like me? I may start playing on servers with many other players, but for now I just want to get a game going from one pc to the other.

I would appreciate any help on this matter. Thanx!!

On the computer with GLQuake, type "maxplayers 4; deathmatch 1; map dm6"

Then type status in the console. You will see an ip address like 192.168.1.106

On the other computer type "connect 192.168.1.106" or whatever the ip address shown was.

So something must not be set up right. On the status page it says something like "listening on server 0.0.0.0:26000"

I would think that is not my ip address.

Just a side note...when I move my cursor over top of my wireless adapter in the tray, it says my IP address is 192.168.1.2....but I thought that was my address for my home network.

I recommend you just take both clients on both PC's to a Server located near you.

If all you want to do is play Quake online, then I suggest putting this hosting a local server buisness to rest. Its just clogging up your fun time,.

In the buisness of enjoying Quake, doing shit as hard as possible only subtracts from the "Fun" aspect.

as an aside for developers, netquake tends to bind client sockets to a specific ip (generally to your modem), this means that if it binds to a different ip than your lan, you can't connect over your lan. this problem can be demonstrated by the fact that many NQ clients are unable to connect to 127.0.0.1.
for a user, you can probably fix it with -ip on the commandline, but I've not tested that.

About the only ones that work are the 192.168.0.0 blocks and 10.50.0.0 for Lan. Most routers Use the 192.168.1.1 with DHCP handing out addresses sequentially. ie.. 192.168.1.2 192.168.1.3, ect....
127.0.0.1 is special its the localhost only works for clients on the same machine.

Find yours by opening the DOS terminal and type in
                  ipconfig /a

                    Wow..lots of info.

Well first of all, I really appreciate the members who have replied with some advice. I feel like I have learned alot already.

Just some background about "Us"..... My 2 Uncles, Stepdad and I used to get together several times a year to play Quake, Rogue and Armagedon....nothing but the fondest memories of that time. As time has passed it has become more difficult to get everyone together for LAN games. If I could somehow get this to work where the 4 of us could play without driving hours, it would be a dream.

I did contact my ISP provider and he walked my through adding the 26000 port to my "port forwarding' list. I first chose the TCP connection, but upon further reading on the Dark Places file, it stated UDP would need to be opened.

We both have high speed internet access through routers. We have not had the chance to try and link up since I made the changes to the ISP firewall, but hopefully soon.

I will have to verify later whether or not my uncle is running WORKGROUP as I am. We both have Windows 7, but I have PC's on my network that run XP so I had to switch to WORKGROUP so my wife's laptop will print through the network.

Patience is a virtue in my opinion. I won't learn all this overnight, nor will I be successfully every time. I again appreciate all your help. I will be visiting this site daily.

I hope to see you all ingame sometime :-)

Your friend and quake 1 lover!!!

For WAN (Wide Area Network/or/ internet play) you don't need to worry about being in the same network. being in the same network only matters if all your PC's are within the same LAN network.

Ok...well one less thing to worry about then. i'll just have to see if we can connect anyway. If all else fails, I'll try finding a server we can all connect to.

Yes This is still your best option. If I am not mistaken and things have changed significantly, the server requires huge amounts of bandwidth,so it has to be hosted by your ISP or a box sitting directly on the backbone or maybe upto 3 hops out for WAN games.

Just a heads up. Last Sat. I was successful in creating a server that my Uncle was able to see and join !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a blast it was to run through those old maps again.

What I had to do was creat a custom port forwarding for 26000 connecting UDP. Once that was done, when creating the server I had to make it "public"....... gave my Uncle the IP and booooom, killing was on.

I named the server "lethl" so if you see it up and running, feel free to join :-)
