Choppy in single player and online or just choppy online only? The former means an OpenGL issue, but if you only have the choppiness online it more than likely isn't an OpenGL issue at all.

If it is OpenGL problem, try this experimental DirectX8 ProQuake and see if it helps. This is sort of a hybrid of DirectQ and ProQuake where MH made the Direct3D support modular for plug-in to other engines. No brightness support and don't ALT-TAB out of it. Otherwise seemed rather solid. Make sure you set the -width and -height in the command line because resolution changing has issues too.

If your issue is OpenGL, this Direct3D8 experimental build doesn't use OpenGL at all.

Then trying the above to see if it runs smoothly may work.

If you try it out, please let me know if it does run smoothly for you on Windows 7. If it does, it would certainly be an OpenGL issue.

Thanks for info. This at least will help everyone understand a bit more about issues with Windows 7 and Quake. I'm glad it appears to work for you.

In time, this particular build should mature and eventually there may even be a Qrack Direct3D8 build.

                    MH's coding expertise +1!

Awesome. I might try a test merge with JoeQuake as well which might serve as a way to ease Rook's path for attempting this.

The D3D8 experimental build gets rid of the dropped frames issue, however, I can't figure out how to change the refresh rate from 60 to 75 hz. When I change it in Quake and hit apply it doesn't change it. The game also looks kinda dark and the "gamma" command doesn't change anything. Another minor issue is when alt+tabbing, black boxes surround all the characters on the hud and the textures look pixelated. Are there any command line parameters to fix these issues?
