  • DP and Water?

I briefly looked through bakers and some others threads about this but cant find anything on it. I have DP working with Rygels ultra and some other addons. It looks great, except the water? The water just looks like muddy water on the surface. I dont even think i can make it translucent with wateralpha... I was hoping there would some impressive water graphics? Is there any addons im missing or a few helpful commands?

    thanks for the help!

It *may* only work with specific versions of DarkPlaces:

Inside3d Forums :: View topic - Pretty water!

Never tried it + know little about it, except I see Moon[Drunk] has apparently used it ....

Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

      Hello Disco Rockstar,

you can use My-Keys Ver. 0.21 (can be found in the Link from Baker).
Its the latest one in there. It runs with actual DP build.
I made my own version (I call it 0.31) with different effects / visuals.
Runs also with actual DP builds.
Look in this thread to find it: http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-hel...ing-packs.html

You can try both and decide what fits your personal feeling more.
(just drop the .pk3 into your id1 folder)

      Best wishes,
      Seven

PS: Maybe you find some other usefull stuff for your Quake here

Just tried the nice water pack, it looks awesome! has reflections!

        PROS:
        Looks REAL good in Quake
        Reflections are almost spot on!
        Very easy to use!

        CONS:
FPS Dropped from 600 to 200 in a heart beat when running from an area with no water to an area with water (expected this though.)

No splash on objects entering the water: makes the pretty water seem like its not 100% believable to its cause.

I'd absolutely use this in SP mode but the FPS drop when you get around large bodies of water is noticeable and can cause movement and aiming discomfort if you're a reflex player, also any other type of player should notice the dramatic decline in responsiveness in a fast pasted gun fight.

        Conclusion.
If you're into pretty looking graphics and run darkplaces simply dew to the fact that it makes Quake look pretty, go for it! While people who are about the multiplayer and don't give a damn what their quake looks like as long as they can pull off a constant 1000 FPS for ultimate murder, you might want to pass on this and keep the default water supplied from Quake. Theres a lot of good things that this adds to and a few major bad things this nice water adds to.

          Hi Phenom,

thats why Lord Havoc made this cvar:
          r_water_resolutionmultiplier

This is how he describes it:
"r_water_resolutionmultiplier is "0.5" [default "0.5"] multiplier for screen resolution when
rendering refracted/reflected scenes, 1 is full quality, lower values are faster"

If you set it to a bigger value than 0.5 , the textures underwater become better/sharper.
          --> FPS drops even more
If you set it to a smaller value than 0.5 , the textures underwater become less sharp.
          --> FPS raises considerably

On my rig a value of 0.4 gives 20% better FPS, while quality is still very good when looking
          into water.

Have fun with this little gem.

Nice! Thanks for the tip Seven! I'm almost done tweaking DP to my likings, but for some reason the sound sounds muffled and not quite accurate when compared to Qrack/ProQuake for some reason. But this will help me with getting clear water in DP and still be able to pull decent FPS!

Might try the -sndspeed 11025 command line parameter?

thanks guys for all the help! I am still trying to figure out the water thing. I dropped the pk3 in my id1 folder and when i loaded DP, now the water looks exactly like the SKY. It is really buggy looking actually. So i set r_novis 1 and this fixes it. The water is better looking, its see through ish but still dark/cloudy looking. It in no way looks like the above screenshots. I tried playing with the r_wateralpha and it doesnt seem to matter what i set that too, it doesnt effect it.

I have the latest version of DP.

ill take some screenshots tonight and post them.

                    Hi Disco,

the screenshots from Baker above are copied from the inside3D forum thread.
                    Those represent V0.1.

With which version do you have problems (0.21 or 0.31) ?

                    Here are screenshots from v0.31
(remember: dynamic effects are hard to see in screenies. The water/waves move of course)
                    :
Below you will find my config.cfg in case you missed to set a cvar correctly.

                    Map: "start"

                    Map: "E1M1"

                    Map: "E1M4"

                    Map: "E4M1"

                      Posted this elswhere but it seemed to get a bit lost and, anyway, it certainly seems mor relevent here so here's the question;
is there a command/way of making the water/slime/lava/teleporter surface textures do that swirly warping thing they used to do in quake. only mine's not doing it. it just slides around on the surface and I'd quite like it to do what it used to, as I think it gives it more 'life'. (nostalgic nonsense, maybe? but it bothers me a little...)
I'm not even sure if it can do it in Darkplaces or not.

...and no, I'm not using pretty water nor do I intend to (for one I can't get it to work! I also feel it looks a little too clean and out of place in quake's dark world) no offence to the creator, it looks amazing but there's no according for taste (however poor on my side )

Any insight, as usual, will be greatly appreciated...

                      thanks in advance guys.

                        Seven,
i see that in a Nexuiz map or two water is present, and i can play the map still in 60FPS...

in Quake1 my video card go to 20FPS and cant raise over 25
Why? what is te difference between water in nexuiz and water in Quake-darkplaces?

My PC: radeon HD4830 on PhenomII x3 3 Ghz.

I've asked Lord Havoc this same question some time ago and what I remembered is that there is no way to do so at this point. He said something about implementing it in some way in the future though. Would be nice imo.
