  • Engine X: Beta

    Download: Engine X 4.57 - 32 MB (Source)

Engine X is attempt to entirely absorb JoeQuake and Enhanced GLQuake's outstanding features and developer notifications into an alternate ProQuake-like engine with the FitzQuake 0.85 protocol (but it doesn't have this yet) and all recent ProQuake modifications with a simplistic menu system.

It's not done. It's very good, but nowhere close to where I want it to be.

I was hoping to hold out for a more polished version, but it may be a month before I have such a version.

But historically, it has always been good to release incrementals to at least keep my versioning and debugging attempts smooth.

Likewise, I have a similar ProQuake that will probably be able to play Nehahra in a week or 2.

    Notable bugs:

    Dead bodies aren't colored.

No need for bug reports at this time. I have a list and know exactly what they are. I have a very heavily modified "next" version of this about 80% done but it may be a week out
It won't have a software build (WinQuakey), because ProQuake's software renderer will have the last few remaining lacking JoeQuake features.

Ooooh, ass-grab @ Baker for this.

I kinda guessed that JoeQuake was one of the engines you were hinting at earlier, but this is a lot more than I expected.

(Your source link should be http://quakeone.com/proquake/enginex_457_src.rar by the way... Baker screws up the source link - AGAIN! )

Had to leave and didn't have time to double check everything. Sometimes I use .zip and sometimes .rar for the sources.

Looks nice...but it bit it on my system.
Very very low framerate and whatnot.
Turned graphics and resolution all the way down and cut the choppy down quite
a bit. but it was still unplayable.

I'll try the next release out for ya too : )

I have a ton of fine-tuning and optimization to do. And some bug fixing.

Right now I have both ProQuake and Engine X shredded apart and am looking at each source code for a single unified codebase. Many small decisions here and there.

            Small list of to dos:

            Finalize menus
Change to DarkPlaces replacement elements names
Make a default interpolation that is always on for monsters, but not players ... what about rockets and such? Hmmm.
Get dead body coloring back in.
Verify that auto-download works completely. I think it does.
            Where are my sparks? Fix.
What is a rational default for particles?
Sometimes I get sound distortion, ProQuake never does. Why?
Automatic water transparency detection and use of this.
Make FF and Rewind keys same as ProQuake
and on and on and on ...
Kill big fat clock --- do one more reasonable sized -- plus it doesn't honor pq_timer in matches
I do get an okish frames per second with the default settings --- which need work --- and actually won 3 games of RQ in row in a crowded field (6-12 players).

But, yes, I have a ton to do ...

Direct3D 8.1 Wrapper version, aka the "dx8" version:

              http://quakeone.com/proquake/dx8_enginex_457.zip

              Changed source files in zip.

Much work to do. Eventually some of the stuff I end up doing here should be helpful to Qrack.

Err, maybe I'm missing something, but I can't load any maps when I run the Dx8 version? Just says map not found. Then I get a lot of errors (different each time) about it not being able to load files from gfx/*.lmp

Wolv, the dx8 version needs the main version in the top post to operate (all the replacement media, which is why it is 32 MB). Then the dx8 build should run.

As time progresses and I have a week or 2 to organize things, annoying things like the above will no longer apply.

Yeah, I have the main version in my Quake folder.. it plays the E1M6 demo fine, but I can't do anything else.

Do you have a quake\enginex folder with a few different pak files?

If not, make sure to extract the 32 MB to the quake folder with extract subfolder to their own folder (or whatever that option is called) on.

The dx8 version plays all the map fine just like the gl version, I just now triple checked to be sure.

Yeah, I don't know. It's all there. Extracted and everything.

this one worked at a reasonable rate.......until i changed my settings to fullscreen.
Then it told me to delete opengl32.dll which isnt there. And i could see in the win7 hover preview that it was running...but the main window wouldnt actually show.

A mess of other things not working though.
You said you didnt need bug reports so I'll not bother just yet.
