low fps with offsetmapping?

  • low fps with offsetmapping?

    hey all, i got some question regarding something i noticed and i wanna know if it mightve just been the builds i used or such.

    normally i use the latest stable darkplaces win64 build from 28-06-'11 which doesnt support offsetmapping and with that build i get average 50-70 fps and from time to time a drop just above 20fps like 23 when theres water cuz i got Seven's pretty water, but my fps always stays above 20 at all times while i got all eye-candy i could find from here including rtlights and models and textures and such and sevens mod compilation and i got all the eyecandy from darkplaces turned on like RT lighting, HDR and bloom and such

    but when after reading the build i use doesnt support offsetmapping, i tried another DP build. and i love how the offsetmapping looks, didnt know it would look so amazing compared to without offsetmapping.

    but with that build my fps is waay lower then with the other build, 15-30 instead rather then 50-70 like i get with the other build which doesnt support offsetmapping :/
    ive also tried using a few other builds from 2010 too to see if the problem mightve been build-specific but all of them seem to give the same low fps compared to the build i normally use :/

    i got a fast comp: core i7 960 3GHz, 12GB ram and a gtx460 1GB
    so its not like as if i dont have a fast enough comp or such

    so my question would be if there are other builds which do support offsetmapping and everything else without having a huge framerate drop?

    or does offsetmapping just cause such a huge increase in resources needed
    that it causes that huge drop in framerate?


    quite new to quake with darkplaces, just got it a bunch of weeks ago, so i dont know if it mightve been different in older builds and thought id ask

      that one does indeed to seem to have much higher fps with offsetmapping turned on.
      although it seems to mess up offsetscaling with some textures for me :/
      which the latest other builds i tried all didnt do, which is especially noticable in E1M1

          Yes, and bug reports are what pushes the whole process along quicker.

          I nagged him in IRC one day about DarkPlaces and multi-gpu support. I think I'll do it again

            Heh, not sure if it makes things go quicker. Depends how much you nag him, probably.

            Or you could just hack the engine. If you have no other hobbies and can invest 6 months for learning enough C.

            Or you could nag Spike to support whatever features you want from DP in FTE - Spike tends to actually listen, which is definitely a plus. Hey, Spike even visits this forum.

                oh yes that would be great to have in darkplaces.

                or even better, if there would be multi-core support, so that people would benefit from having dualcore or quadcore, which i have too myself.
                cuz right now several cores just stay unused for darkplaces, and im sure it would give a huge performance-boost if lord havoc would implent support for multi-core and multi-threading, especially for me since i got a quadcore

                we should totally go nag him to implent both multi-core and multi-gpu support together

                    dont games need to have multi-gpu support implented?
                    cuz games which dont support it wont actually benefit from it as far as i know?

                    as far as i know games need to have code implented to support multi-gpu, right?

                    and quake most certainly didnt support it by itself. multi-gpu was not even something that was possible yet back when quake was made


                    feel free to correct me if im wrong btw, but as far as i know games need to have multi-gpu support implented to benefit from crossfire or SLI

                      There is NO issue with DarkPlaces today except a little low performance.
                      And the reason for this was pretty well described by MH here.

                      So there is no need to nag this extremely busy man with splitterface�s issue from his post #3 in this thread.
                      Splitterface uses an OLD build in those screen comparism, which is no longer interesting for LH. New builds from DP doesnt have the described issue.

                      LordHavoc explains things in that thread and "offsetmapping" is an important subject in it as well.
                      Please read this one carefully: click


                      Now to help you even further (because that thread�s last post was one day after the actual "stable" DP build was released):

                      The build with highest performance and offsetmapping is without a doubt the one from february 3rd 2011.
                      The build that has been recommended above from march 28th 2011 has issues with offsetmapping.
                      Start a new game (start map) with your current option settings and you will see flimmering on the floor and models without a offset texture have issues, because DP emulated offset textures for them (that is also mentioned in the thread I linked).
                      Shortly after (on april 8th 2011 to be precise) offsetmapping has been totally switched off in DarkPlaces !

                      I call it destiny, that LordHavoc implemented offsetmapping again 6 hours (!!) after his actual "stable" release.
                      So the autobuild from june 28th 2011 has offsetmapping, while the "stable" build from same date has not.
                      After that date ONLY autobuilds have been released until september 26th 2011.
                      A new beta has been released on that day.

                      Since autobuild june 28th 2011 the offsetmaping has been visually enhanced. That is what your screenshots show.


                      Now back to your issue splitterface:
                      1.) If you want "new offsetmapping" with BEST performance I recommend:
                      Autobuild july 2nd 2011
                      2.) If you want "older offsetmapping" with BEST performance I recommend:
                      Autobuild february 3rd 2011
                      (click on their names to download them)

                      Be aware that Autobuild february 3rd 2011 has a better performance compared to Autobuild july 2nd 2011.

                      Of course you should compare+test both.


                      One more important thing to know:
                      Shortly after Autobuild february 3rd 2011 the default setting for cvar "r_shadow_shadowmapping" has changed from "0" to "1".
                      So be sure to set it to "1" in your config if you decide to use the february build, to get the nice shadows back.

                      I hope this could answer some questions.

                      PS: Both linked versions work also perfectly with "DP New Teleport". Starting from end of august 2011, this has changed. Unfortunately I dont have the time anymore to adjust it accordingly.
                      PPS: Be sure to use the NVDIA driver 275.33 or newer with your GTX460. This gives a huge performance boost in DP.

                            think i got pretty much everything by now, been coming to this forum for a few weeks and searching more and more every day and downloaded everything i found, from RTlights to textures and monster model replacements, weapon, ammo and pick-ups replacements, high-res particle effects, pretty water and new lava and teleporters from you (which are all 3 amazing btw )and lots more.

                            here's a pic of all the add-ons i found, to big list to name them all, lol

                            as you can see, ive been real busy browsing the forums since i came across them a few weeks ago

                            if you know of any more stuff which i dont have yet, links please?
                            id love to have anything more which i missed

                            btw i think i once also came across a thread with hi-res textures for the DoE stone-knights? but i didnt download them and cant seem to find the thread anymore

                              just tried the builds you suggested seven.
                              the one from 02feb i cant get to start normally for some reason, keeps giving me error saying i have to add a base dir

                              but the build from 07july does work fine and gives me good fps.
                              although it gave me that same glitch on the textures with the buttons in e1m1 too.

                              tried playing around with the offsetmapping scale setting and the glitch doesnt show when setting scale down to 0.02 instead of 0.05 like it says in the info-file from rygels pack.

                              although with offsetmapping scale set to 0.02 its hardly noticable at all most of the time sadly which kinda ruins the whole point of using offsetmapping
