                Guys, this is freaky.

                I've had an idea for a kind Dungeon Crawl mod kicking around in my head for a while. I want maps randomly filled with increasingly tougher monster and cooler items to find like a roguelike game. Also perma-death is essential. Having played the excellent COOP or DIE mod for Q2 I was inspired by how much the perma-death effect adds to the suspense, challenge and gameplay. But, essentially, I don't want an RPG. No stats. You are relying on you mAd QuAkE SkIllZ(tm) all the way. Player 'upgrades' are in the form of random items you find. You never know when turning the corner you'll find some uber armour or some such.

                Anyway, after dabbling around making 2D roguelikes for a while, I decided it was time to give my idea to go, so I came to Quake 1 as it's the easiest 3D shooter to mod. (I made a few simple mods for ol' Quakey back in the day) I don't have ninja coding skills. So here I come looking for old QuakeC and I find you lot discussing something just like my idea!

                So I'm going to try an knock up a quick version of my mod in Quake 1 as a 'proof of concept' Randomly filled maps of increasing difficulty, permadeath, maybe some new items and simple monster variant. Hopefully it will be fun without being too difficult and time consuming to get running. If it works, who knows? I'd love to work up some interest and get a mod running on Source with custom monsters, weapons and a nice inventory system.

                      Well that wasn't so hard.

                      I got random monsters spawning pretty damn easy. It was so easy in fact I burst out laughing when it worked first time. I never write bits of code that work first time :d

                      I made a new map entity (monster_random) That pops out a random monster. Now I need to make it more sophisticated so that it creates monsters based on the dungeon level the player is on. Basically, you take a map and fill it with these entities. You need one on every space on the map where it's possible for a monster to start on. Hundreds of the things. Then the game looks at what level your on and decides who to put there (if anything, most spaces will be left empty)

                      I just need a bunch of maps I can use as the dungeon levels. They don't need to be too complex. Are there any open source maps out there I can use? Any of you guys want to convert a few of your maps for me? I'm not a good mapper, and I don't have the time to make oodles of maps from scratch.. I made a quick test map and a start map for players to meet before entering the dungeon caves but thats all.

                      Then I just need to make a similar system for items, or have the monsters drop health packs and stuff at random, and I will have a playable game.

                      I intend to make a few simple monster variants, like soldiers who fire rockets, that kinda thing. As in rougelikes, a nice variety in enemies should keep things interesting. Also I'd like a bunch of new weapons. I'm going to replace the axe with some kinda weak infinite ammo gun, ala Quake 2. I already made the basic shotgun pickupable. You don't start with it. I beefed it up too. I used the shotgun sound fx from DooM, doubled the damage and increased the reload time. I like to call it the 'classic shotgun' :d

                      Oh I'm rambling. This is turning into one of those 'stream of consiouness' posts

                            Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but did anything ever come of this? I think it would be awesome to combine Quake with a dungeon crawl and play a series of randomly generated levels. Especially if it added a few new items and monsters. Maybe with Quoth?

                              Hendar and I did a little bit of code testing, but he has disappeared. I still have the code, but it's not even 20% finished. It doesn't use LordHavoc's level-generator, but that seems to be a different program than the quake engine that the mod is run on.
