  • The Ultimate Game server - Formerly Fat Pipe

Here is an email I received from their tech staff:

    Hello,
I'm sorry but we are no longer setting up quake 1 servers. The ones we run
were inherited from another company we've taken in.

    Thanks,
    Daniel

Hmm. I guess this is pretty bad news for anyone trying to get on with them.

    Anyone know otherwise?

I knew about the move, didn't know they weren't supporting quake1 going forward... Guess we can't drop the ball on the current Quake1 servers

Yea this is pretty shitty news as UGS (Formally FatPipes) has been the goto company for Quake1 servers.

Yeah. Well, anyone who is currently using them for hosting their quake1 servers, don't migrate, you'll never get them back! eek.

I emailed him back to try to change their minds and to at least get a sense of their reasoning. I doubt they'll even reply. With that said, their tier1 provider is peer1. Managed Hosting, Managed Hosting Plans, Dedicated Hosting, Colocation | PEER 1

For latency purposes, any gaming servers really need to be hosted with a tier1 provider. I notice that peer1 does offer a cloud service, where you can purchase a 'cloud server', which is basically just a virtual machine whereby you are guaranteed a certain processor, ram, storage, bandwidth and so on. Additional resources (bandwidth primarily) on the cloud are available to all cloud machines, and is shared amongst the cloud servers. You can choose whatever operating system you like. This probably includes various versions of Windows and linux/unix distros. You get full control of your virtual server. I would assume that peer1 would be just as "fast" as UGS.

Rackspace/Slicehost has a similar service, but at a cheaper rate. Peer1 is slightly expensive compared to Rackspace, as their smallest cloud server is: 2ghz proc, 1gb ram, 5gb storage, and you can configure your alotted bandwidth usage. I calculated the previous configuration + 150gb data transfer and it comes out to $66.96/month. Rackspace gives 150gb data transfer minimum included, which I find very generous. They're running at around $20/month.

With all that said, I suppose it would be wise of those in the know to search out Tier1 hosting in the future. Hopefully a provider that is both fast and inexpensive can be found to run Quake1. I'll be on the lookout.

Actually, one doesn't need a hosting company. Sure if a company is going to host 100 servers they need a FAST ass internet, etc. But for someone to just host a 16player slot QUAKE1 server, a decent Pentium4 and T1 (1.5mb/s) line is all you really need. The average Quake server transfers 18Kbps-40Kbps for each client, that's still only 640Kbps for a full server.

                Rook, Agreed bandwidth-wise..
I don't mean to split hairs by any means, but it all depends on where that t1 is located. Latency to a t1 connection that is directly connected to a tier1 backbone will have much better latency than one in podunk city USA.

Of course, routing is a science of its own and much more political than we would think. For example: When I run a traceroute from my home computer out to let's say..yayowave (Texas), the path looks fine and dandy. Home computer -> ISP -> DFW. Yet, I get an absurd 70ms. The problem that I found was on the return path from DFW (which isn't shown in the traceroute) is that all traffic headed back my way from DFW is forced through a chicago peer, then back to my ISP. Annoyingly, this is where my additional latency comes from. I contacted my ISP concerning this and found that the reason for forcing traffic through chicago is because peering in Chicago is cheaper than peering in DFW. So, incoming traffic to my ISP is forced through a ridiculous path to cut costs. My ISP offers home and business accounts. I've tested the same for the business accounts, and the incoming traffic is not forced through Chicago.

You can still use fatpipes, that's just the same response I was getting back when I was setting up yayowave. What you need to do, is literally CALL them, repeatedly, between like 11pm central time and 3 am central time, this is when I had the success I did in getting yayowave and yayotexas setup, this is the SAME issue that Monster ran into when setting up newdm.quakeone.com which is ALSO through fatpipes So ignore that email and push on my friend.

                    Frenzy,

HAHA Thanks for the info. Should I decide to move it, this is exactly what I will do. Do you mind if I ask what they are charging "per slot"? I noticed Quake2 was at like .50 per.

Just wanted to let you guys know that UGS has recently started hosting Q1 servers again using the original FatPipe files, configs and settings.

                            Personally,
any hosting company I would ever do business with, would allow me to put my own exe/mod files on the server, (ill sign a waiver against any thought of wrong doing), so that I have total control. Otherwise I'll just host off my home static ip and call it a day. This isnt a snide jab, but the reality as more home networks are breaking the T1 speeds, Quake just doesn't need much more.
