Just a note for anyone setting up a server on UGS, you have to put your custom maps in /id1/maps/ instead of /gamedir/maps
Striker was having probs setting up crmod luckly we stumbled on the fix.

Those are some very good server prices. $7.50 per month for 10 slots, not bad at all.

I contact them about this, its only for new servers

so they set the server up for you basically have no access to the server? that doesnt make sense.. i'd want atleast ssh access or remote desktop at the least.

They wouldn't want you using the server for anything other than the game you're paying for, and they don't want you touching the command line (where the max players is set). Sounds reasonable to me.


If you want total access to the instance, you can rent a VPC

What files are used? How do I tell them I want CRMOD? Or Do i FTP my own files?

I have to differ on this, I just setup a quake 1 server 12/15/2011 from Ultimate Game Servers. wicked.servequake.com:26000.

First, go here:

Clanring CRMod

CRMOD has some of the best docs in the universe. Use wqpro to locally setup a server on your own machine and you'll know everything you need to know about how to use it on a server as a general rule of thumb.

But also as a general rule of thumb, if you don't know how to run on your own machine in dedicated mode, you'll have a hard time finding the right words to communicate if you have a hosted server.

But yeah I bet you'll FTP your own files and if UGS is anything like FatPipes they have a web based user control panel where you can restart your server after you upload the progs.dat and config and the maps and such. But you'll mostly use FTP.

Personally,
any hosting company I would ever do business with, would allow me to put my own exe/mod files on the server

I just connected to wicked.servequake.com and typed "status" and it said "Anti-Wallhack on".

So it for sure isn't running winquake.exe ...
