Cthulhu Head

I see you have started to use smoothing groups
----
A little about what went epically wrong:
When I said I'm "pretty good at faces"... it was just the nice way for me not to say that I am really good at faces. I don't feel bad saying that cause I have worked really hard to learn proper head topology and how to model realistic faces. When I took on this project, my goal was to exhibit what I am truly capable of.
I began working on the original mesh and quickly came to a roadblock. That roadblock was entirely based in the fact that what I am good at (head modelling) was completely stomped on by tentacles. I couldn't even breathe while I was modelling. It was also fucking up my edge loops and I kept getting lost.
Once I got rid of the clusterfuck the head started to come to life. My last image shows nothing but a lot of eye/brow/forehead/nose retopo. I have the final image in my head and it is quite a bit more involved than what I have so far. More tentacles will be added but they are going to be strategically placed to follow muscle groups and instead of chopping the face in half, they are going to extend the features of the head.
When I am done, some may argue that it isn't really Cthulhu. I don't care. It is going to be heavily inspired by Cthulhu and it is going to look like pure evil. In many ways it may even be better than "expected Kthulhu" because it will have the ability to be given a personality... mainly because it's gonna be a person (kinda).
The original Kthulhu head mesh is garbage. It's barely more expressive than a mop.

Major improvement on the second model's facial expression. I see what you mean about the details you're focusing on now. And the eye pockets are exactly what I was imagining with the angry look. And who gives a shit if it's "classic cthulhu" or not. The only person who knows what Cthulhu really looks like is Lovecraft, and if you're up to date on recent events, he's dead. There's no right or wrong answer, as long as he looks badass and invokes fear. The second model is more along the lines of that.

Thank both of you.
@Dutch _ I know I told you I would have a gamepack for you today but could you forgive me if I wait til maybe as late as Monday. It's Mardi Gras here and I've been getting my ass handed to me at work. Before I give you a gamepack, I have to go over everything and make sure I'm not giving you the wrong version, I honestly don't feel like doing that tonight, and I don't see myself feeling any different tomorrow.
I promise there is a gamepack and you can have it... just let me get to a day off (Monday). I just want to drink some coffee and play with Bob.
What are you going to do with him?

There is still a bunch to do. The tentacles are place holders right now. I will complete them when I complete the rest of the head. The eye thingies just looked like something you would find on sea-life to me.

Looking interesting!
In the end, even if this doesn't turn out to really be a Cthulhu head, I think it would make a good underwater enemy to fight in Quake. Quake already does not allow you to breathe infinitely underwater so, a boss of this type could be a real challenge to defeat, considering you will eventually have to come up for air but "Bob" isn't going to stop attacking.
my kid is gonna shit a brick when this guy pops out of the lava!@lava - water.

Hmmmm @ add som Krakken too.
Imma save what I have, place it on the side, duplicate it and remove the entire mouth. Then I'm going to widen the nose into a more Krakken mouth. I can see it in my head, it looks crazy but, I think I can shorten the features a bit and pull it off. Yeeeaaaah~ this is going to look vicious. Only downside, I have so many teeth to make. Even duplicating them and positioning the duplicates isn't exactly "fast". Now I have to build the entire inside of the mouth, actually.

K, let's do it. Be back eventually.

agree with Gdiddy, your change looks quite interesting.
its quite different, but i like it. reminds me of creatures from greek mythology or such
the part just below nose kinda makes it look like he has a moustache or such, lol
what you have now also kinda looks like it could be a mask or such.are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
> then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

@Bluntz - I'm not releasing the mesh til it is complete and I don't intend to spend any time working it backwards either. It's already time consuming enough.
@Talisa - "or such" much? lol... You don't have to be all nervous to say stuff. Just say whatever you want to say. I know it isn't "perfect" and I'm not made of glass.
Yeah it did kinda look like a moustache. I'm going for lumpy squid lips there just isn't enough topology yet. It will look less like a mask when more detail is added around it.
I didn't do Krakken mouth because it would have eaten into the face tentacle topology and became an even bigger headache than it was already going to be. I did redo the mouth though. The last version was meant to be static (stay closed). I opened the mouth and redirected the edge flow. I also did some eye stuff and added an armor beard.Last edited by MadGypsy; 03-04-2014, 11:44 PM.
