Should I model in eyes or use Talisas fade to black trick with the sockets?

I just realised I keep jumping this thing between comedy and tragedy masks, just more elaborate.

I know what you're thinking (probably). "That looks fuxxin weird, Gypsy" and I would partially agree. The reason I only partially agree is because I know I will find a way to pull it off. I probably need to add some more tentacles. This is one of those sci-fi-ish creatures where I need to add more possible detail to detract from some of the impossible detail (the giant squid connected to his head). Then again I couuuuld say that when I said "Cthulhu Head" all of you took it the wrong way, but that would be a lie. A funny lie though. I guess it wouldn't be out of character for me to build an entire monster called a Cthulhu Head. That isn't what is happening here though. I really am trying to "reinvent" Cthulhu.

It almost looks like a chunk of a Quitesson. I believe the wrath face, even though my model appears to be laughing.

Imma go work on the mouth now.

Holy shit Bob's come a long ways, after looking at the before and after. What's your plan for the eyes? When you say fade to black, are you envisioning no eyes, just sockets, for an empty, dead look? Might be pretty intimidating. The other thing I think would look good would be bright yellow eyes with a black pupil. Beady, almost human-like with a constant death stare. I'd have to see both to make a judgement though.

          Hello,

The head reminds me of Davy Jones.
Now I know that Lovecraft also inspired 'Pirates of the Caribbean' !

Even 'Hellboy' had a Lovecraft monster at the end of the movie: Ogdru Jahad

Maybe these pictures help your inspiration.

@sevens images - I wish I was good enough to make stuff like that

            --

For shitz and giggles I decided to see what it would look like if I chunked a whole squid on the back of his head.

This is not my current version though. I made this last night maybe 5 minutes after I posted the first image with a squid on the back of his head. My current version has the extra squid chunk removed.

                @ Sza

I was already thinking it looked like he had dredlocks. I don't really want him to have dredlocks but there are only so many places I can put tentacles. I'm just going wherever my imagination takes me. I mean, I stuck a squid to the back of this guys head.

I was actually thinking he could have some kind of a starfish thing for a mouth. Like basically model the underside of a starfish facing forward, with a hole in the center of it ringed with rows of teeth.

Hmmm, I'm glad you posted, I forgot that I thought of that and I just finished modelling the entire lower gumline (teeth and all). Imma save this and duplicate it, plug my stafish idea into his face. Unlike Krakken mouth, I can pull this off without removing half of his face. I have quite a few forked versions of this guy.

That man in that image has an awesome face. So much detail and character.

Space Dwarf? - lololol, No doubt, man. That's Thorin Oakenshield 3000 in: The Space Hobbit or There And Back To The Future.

So, I modeled the Starfish mouth but, it was just too much. I was thinking the overall model is a good start for some kind of carnivorous starfish so I saved it as it's own thing. Maybe this could even be an interesting piranha replacement. If anyone actually wants to do something with this, just let me know and I'll throw up the blend.

That brings me back to where I was last with Bobs mouth. Here are some various angles of his incredibly simple dental work.

Here is all of what Bob is so far. I basically finished the mouth with the exception of the tongue.

Any updates on Bob? If you change anything, keep the mask around his eyes. Gives him a lot of character.

Hah! I had decided that I wasn't going to post another update until someone asked about it... that didn't last long

I made quite a few changes. Some of them are obvious and some of them are not so obvious. The more obvious stuff is the work I put into the tentacles. I think I finally found a pattern I like and I worked a lot on the flow. The less obvious stuff is stuff you can't see anyway. I knew when I removed the other tentacles I was going to find out that my actual face topology was a bit of mess underneath. This is because I'm too lazy to select a bunch of stuff and hide it, so I work around it and accidentally tweak the wrong vertices. I cleaned up all of those mistakes.

Another change I made is his name. This is obviously not Cthulhu and let's face it, "Bob" isn't gonna fly either so, I typed something up in Google translate and then went through all the translations for each language until I found a mish mash that I liked.

As of right now he is known as Kalmar Eniyan, but he might end up being Kalmaradam. Which, not to spoil the mystique or anything but both of those roughly translate to Squid Man.

Imma say this head is basically done, from a mesh standpoint. I have a couple of tentacles with open ends but, aside from sealing those up, I don't really see what else I can do.

Lol I have a vested interest in it as long as you are still ok with it going in my mod Regardless, it's pretty badass and I like keeping up to speed with it.

I can understand not going with Chthulu. I was looking at pics of Chthulu today and, although I don't think Bob needs to fit previous descriptions, he has taken on a character of his own. Might as well go totally new. Love the name, it still has a Lovecraftian-type sound to it.

Tentacle pattern looks great. Not blowing smoke up your ass, that's the real deal. It shits on your previous tentacles.

So where do you see the monster as a whole going? Boss monster or a more common underwater monster at about vore/fiend difficulty? It would be nice to have more underwater options than just the Rotfish (which, btw, I modified to be absolutely lethal in large packs). But Bob could also be a pretty challenging and tactical underwater boss fight.

Of course man. I don't "indian give". However, there is a whole freakin lot to do before this is ever gonna be ready for your mod. The entire body needs to be built to at least this poly density, get AO map, maybe normals (but probably not) and then reduced to mdl level of detail (a blob). It also needs be rigged, animated, bla, blah, blah... we are nowhere yet.

                            .

So where do you see the monster as a whole going
I want to answer this a different way than you meant and then come back and answer it as you expected.

This guy needs to be super muscular and armoured from at least head to waist. I say head to waist because I have an idea for a very very different lower body. I can't even explain it at this time.

Now to answer the way you were expecting

I think this guy is a common monster of exceptional difficulty. The reason I say this is because I have this story that popped in my head while I was modelling him about how his race (I guess Kalmarian) are the guardians of Cthulhu. The only downside to this storyline is it means we still need to model an entire Cthulhu. Just like the piranha guard Shub, this guy would be on the way to a Cthulhu encounter.

I wish I was faster and a bit better at modelling. I have a lot of ideas for monsters that originated with lovecraft. If I could bring them to life, one hell of a Quake 1 ver 2 could be made from it.

Unfortunately, I need a break from this shit just after making a head. I have a waivering passion for this stuff. I love it til I'm bored out of my skull and then it's time to do something else. I've been playing with blender for like a decade or something though so, it's not like I'm not going to pick blender back up soon enough.

I have an idea for something completely unrelated to this but very related to my other project. Imma go work on that for a little while. If you want to take a stab at modelling the body, just let me know and I'll PMK you the blend. If not, maybe I'll take a stab at it in a couple/few weeks.

Oh absolutely, I understand. I have so much other shit to do as well. All of this is a hobby, it's supposed to be fun. If you get bored or tired, there's no point in pushing on till you're ready.

I'm digging the Chthulu guardian story. If you're fighting Bobs (Kalmarians), then the player should get the sense that something a whole lot worse is coming up. Nice.

As far as the body, I'm going to be real busy these next two weeks wrapping up school and working. So I'm down for throwing Bob on the back burner for awhile. I'm going to practice my modelling on items and weapons before tackling bodies.

I know you said at the beginning of the project that you only wanted to do the head. So whether or not you do the body is entirely up to you. I have no problem tackling it later on, but I do really enjoy seeing your work and I will be making more monsters later on. So I guess what I'm saying is you are welcome to get as involved as you want in the mod, I have no problem partnering up and sharing the credit. And I'm not a stickler for time commitments. Do what you want, when you want. It's all up to you buddy. I'm just grateful for the work you've already put into it.

I've been making stuff here at Q1 for a respectable amount of time, you and your mod haven't seen the last of me.

Honestly, I don't give a crap about the credit. I'd be more delighted to simply see people participate.
