    In case you need some inspiration, you might wanna check out the links posted here. Lots of pretty amazing stuff in there, including an absolutely awesome Astaroth that would make a great boss. Examples in post #3676, link to artist's main site in #3675.

    @mechanized monsters: No thanks. I don't wanna feel like I'm in Quake II when I play Quake I. Edie is well more than enough. Plus, the shambler is too badass in himself to need more than his claws and lightning. I guess more robotic monsters like Quoth's sentinel would be a nice addition to the base bestiary, but the very idea of partly cybernetic/mechanical versions of Quake monsters is rubbing me the wrong way.

      Thanks for the link. The second monster is my favorite! Looks like something out of silent hill.

        Yeah, he'd make a great replacement for the zombie.

        Edit: You may actually be right about Silent Hill: there are several SH creatures on his site (check his pyramid-head dude, he rocks!), so this may very well be one of them.

          Thanks for the props. I think I'm gonna find something else for his lower half other than a big demon penis. For the record, I wasn't trying to be vulgar. I was attempting to add a detail that isn't "more armor" or "a skirt". I think it's too much though. Something has to go there. Having nothing at all just looks weird. I tried to make it like a a hairy mammal penis ie basically attached to the lower torso for it's length but, I think I kinda failed at that. If nothing else I think it at least needs to be pushed further into his guts. More like inside of him with a ridge that insinuates it's existence as opposed to being more like attached to the outside.

          @ don't know how much of the original model you've looked over,

          none. I looked at one image on google of what we all see in game, realized it's just a bull with fucked up front legs and decided that I really don't give a crap about "faithful" (never did). I'm an artist. I'm making art. If it can replace the fiend in game...goody. If it turns out to be barely inspired by the fiend and all your staunch quakers hate it :shrugs:. I don't and never did believe in or support the idea that something I make isn't good because some itty-bitty community of people think I should have pretty much just remade the same thing they already have. In short, this is my model. This is going to be the model and I'm not changing jack shit to make it more "Quake".

          I'll texture and rig this thing and turn around and sell it on turbo-squid for 49 bucks. Ironic, right? I turn a free werewolf into a 49$ model and sell it on the same site I got the werewolf from.

                At this point I'm basically just playing "dress-up".

                @Dutch

                I didn't use your idea cause his tail needs to bend and I don't think his space-drawers look out of place. I'm sure the texture is going to make this look very different - a real texture always does. This is just colored vertex groups. But, the ?mace at the end of his tail was derived from your segment idea. I added 1 segment...to the end.

                @thigh guards

                Nah, I'm trying to get away from armor. I don't have any ideas but, no more armor. I don't like poo-pooing all your ideas but, those particular 2 ideas are too far off track. You have to keep in mind, this guy needs to be able to bend and move. All this armor needs to be made rigid. I'm not trying to make this a complete pain in the ass. I also will never be satisfied with armor that almost doesn't flex and move. That shit is gonna be rock solid just like it should be.

                I have visions of this thing being a hell of a lot smarter than a fiend. Instead of just lunging at his opponent he is more calculated. Being a calculated fighter he can taunt. One taunt I see is that mace smashing into the ground with a thud, kicking up dust, while he displays his arm horns menacingly.

                He reminds me of a samurai in many ways. Look at that side view and imagine his arm horns as swords.

                    So I guess its sound will be a trumpet blow...?

                    Not sure about the tail mace: first I don't see how it could possibly stay in place without straps (you might wanna make it part of his actual tail instead, like what's-his-name dinosaur). Also, if you go along with a tail weapon, the monster should have an extra tail attack on top of his leap and arm slash. It wouldn't make sense to not have it put to use.

                    I think I like hooves better than clawed feline feet. They're more fitting to a demon IMO (though japanese folklore may disagree on this matter), and they're also more original: I can't count the sheer number of badass monsters with clawed feet in videogames, whereas off the top of my head I can't recall any hoove-footed monsters besides Quake's fiend that this shinhkuma is supposed to replace.

                        YES. When he starts taking heavy gunfire, he can temporarily crouch low and let the armor take it all. He can also strafe jump sideways to avoid rockets and such. And like bfg said, a tail attack alongisde leaping and slashing. I'm also thinking a ram charge with the horns. Love the name too.

                        thanks! The idea is really starting to grow on me. It could even be worked into a storyline. The base enemies are possessed under the influence of Quake, right? Maybe Quake sends some of his own creatures through to be outfitted with modern tech to guard the slipgate.

                          Shinhkumas are born with an oblong ball at the end of their tail. As they become almost full grown the warrior classes have brass maces forged around it. ::chewing invisible gum::

                          yup and for 49$ you can make that happen all day. All you'll have to do is open up blender and learn how to animate a rig, and I guess export it as something Quake can use.

                            Lots of problems with this AO map. It's even at 100 samples. I probably need to triangulate the mesh first. Or even better sub-divide the shit out of it, bake a map and use it for a non-subdivided version.

                                @Can you even sell something based on a free model, legally speaking?

                                Yup according to the license I can even do nothing to it and sell it. Not to mention that the only part of this model that is still the original is from the bottom of the feet up to the first bend. However, I better do one hell of a good texture job if I really think I'm gonna sell this for 49$. I'm gonna give it a really nice rig though. I would probably make more money if I sold it for $19. I would probably make even more if I had a 3d studio max version. Blender has a 3ds export but I don't think it's even legal for blender to have a .max export.

                                I really just want to see if I can sell a 3d model. If a few months went by without a single sale I would probably animate it and write a QC script for it. It's not gonna fit in vanilla quake though. It's not gonna fit in mdl format either. Even if it did, F mdl format.

                                @ Somehow I still thought this was for Dutch's monster pack

                                If I was going to participate in that I wouldn't be working on a fiend. Dutch is doing a fiend. I'm a jerk sometimes but, I couldn't even imagine working on the exact same thing as my bro, at the exact same time and release a competing model. That ain't cool.
