  • Quake MP2: Lava SuperNailGun

    Hello,

inspired by Webangels beautiful Mission Pack weapon compilation and OoPpEes amazing Prox Launcher,
I wanted to create my interpretation of my all-time-favorite-weapon:

    The Lava SuperNailGun

So far I have only my idea and 2 hand full of textures.
I am no Photoshopper, nor a talented graphic artist, so this is my issue and handicap.
Freeware Paint.Net is my best friend now.
I will use an already available model for it.

These are my first shots. Nothing breathtaking, but you get an idea where the journey goes:

Proposal 1: (that was my 1st attempt)

Proposal 2: (with smaller/more detailed texture)

Proposal 3: (with a darker texture and more contrast)

Spinviss idea of nails sticking in walls:
With Proposal 2: With Proposal 3:

Done expect a blast like OoPpEes Prox Launcher.
Lets see what we will get...

    Kind Regards,
    Seven

    Loving it so far.
My only suggestion is to try and make the barrels have more glow - basically the entire tip of barrel and then fades out as it gets further back. That will give it a nice effect. Think of "Branding" of animals. They have that metal in the fire - the tip is VERY hot and glowing but as it goes further down the bar it fades away.

      Really good Work!
maybe you can add a "Rough metal texture" on the back of lavanailgun... and lava texture on chimes seems to me a bit big.

        Thank you for your feedback.

OoPpEe, unfortunately "fading out a texture" is not possible in Paint.net.
Not as far as I know. I will continue to find this function anywhere.
As I mentioned, your work and my work cannot be compared.
You create your amazing own textures with Photoshop, which I unfortunately cannot do.

I will keep on searching for other lave/fire/glow textures in the net.
Maybe I will find a better one...
Working with cut/paste/copy combined with gamma/brightness correction is my way at the moment.

inkub0, I agree. The lava texture is too big. I will for sure use smaller shapes.

        Best Regards,
        Seven

Does paint.net allow "Feathering" when you select something. IF so you can select the back of the barrel and put a large "feathering" and then push delete once or twice and it will give off the fade effect (assuming your lava glow is a different texture like _glow or _luma)

Check out Paint Shop Pro, it's like a "slimmed" Photoshop. I use it since Version 3.0 and i really love it. You'll get it very cheap off eBay. My Version is Paint Shop Pro Photo X2, you could get it (auction) for about 20 .

Paintshop Pro 7 is what I use. I have 9 but only use it when I NEED to (some filters don't work in 7). I love 7 due to the simple layout and it's just generally simplified. Much like I use Milkshape 3D for alot of my work - 3D Studio Max is used to enhance the model - start with basic things in Milkshape - Max for advanced.

                Hello,

first of all: Thank you all for your help and feedback !
It really helps an old man jumping over his shadow

Now, I made 2 more proposals for you. (edited in post no.1)
I have found beautiful new textures, which makes a better look.
Please tell me what you think.

As a bonus, I used Spinviss idea of "nails sticking in walls" mod.
A big warm hug goes out to Spinvis in Africa
Together with the lava nails, this gives an AMAZING look in-game.
Especially in dark places. (see screens in 1st post)

Thank you for your replies. It helps getting this baby as good as possible.

                Kind Regards,
                Seven

PS: I will check if something like "Feathering" is available OoPpEe.
At this moment I dont use glow / luma textures.
They will come later, after my diffuse texture decision.

I like 3 the most as it gives off a more "lava" look. Glow isn't overbearing but still highly noticeable.

Also if you'd like you could send me your progress thus far and I could do the feathering for you.

Hmmm, how to explain in english.

I like the look of the barrel but why should the whole thing glow like lava? A little glow would be nice mixed with a metal texture. Proposal 3 is much better, there you should try to exchange the black parts with something looking more "metal".

                      Quake Reforged - Armoury DoE

This is how I was explaining it.
I also noticed (no offense to the team) that they got pretty lazy on the Multi-Grenade weapon. They just reskinned the Grenade on the model and projectile grenade to have a hazard texture - which the orig did not. I hope that isn't their final of the multi-grenade. They have GREAT texture artists - they can use mine if they want and use that as a base to make a much better skin than mine.

Proposal 3 is the best of all, i think it must have only a stronger luma map... i think that metal is wrong on that chimes.
They are LAVA nails not IRON nails...

I meant something more like this: Klick. Not from the texture but from the look of the barrel. I mean lava nails OK (if they were made of lava they would never keep their shape), for me it looks more like glowing (hot) nails so the barrel will get hot too while shooting them. This are only my thoughts its not to criticize Seven.

                              Hello,

I like and need feedback ! So dont worry grave_digga. You and everyone else are more than welcome.

So now that we all think proposal 3 is the best I will continue to work on it.

I of course like the idea of the glowing front of the barrels (but a little less compared
                              to QR team) very much.
Due to the fact that I cannot do it, OoPpEe will hopefully give me a hand with its creation.
It should be a luma texture. And a little gloss texture, so that you can see it in:
                              - dark places (luma will be strongly visible)
                              - bright places (gloss will be visible)

Its really very sad that QR team does not release their work seperately.
                              Their work look really good.

Anyway, I will come back when I got the diffuse done.

                              Best Regards,
                              Seven
