  • High-res reskins for classic mods...

    OSJC here again, this time bringing some long forgotten mods back from the dead!
    Inspired by OoPpEe's skin/model work for the official mission packs I was thinking how some of the custom mods from back in the day had some very good reskins of classic models to represent new weapons, monsters and items etc... let alone the multitude of new (all be it, oftimes lo-poly) models that came out too.

    So this thread has been spawned from the bottomless pit that is my mind for all of you to use as a canvas to put any reskin (or re-model for that matter) you have, as long as it is for any of the classic mods!

    KQP RFL skin!

    OK! the first of (hopefully) many more to come, this skin breathes new life into the rapid-fireball-launcher from Killer-Quake-Pack.

    It's compiled for darkplaces, from Primevils sng skin for plague's model (included) and has gloss, bump and glow maps.
    Ok, so Its nothing too special to write home about but Its a lot better than the original and even if you don't have kqp* but like the skin you can change the names of the files from 'V_rfl' to 'v_nail2' and use it as an alternative perforator skin...

        Hello osjclatchford,

        This skin is the one I like the most from your work.

        I hope you dont mind that I uploaded your screen to imageshack (after I raised the brightness).
        Your screenshot is almost black and the beautiful details could not be seen.

        Two small crazy ideas came into my mind while watching at it:
        You could make the red part of the glow texture slowly pulsating from dark to actual intensity with a little shader.
        Or make the same texture without the red part for normal sng and with red part for the lava-sng.




        I like this work so much, because I use the same weapon model for the sng.
        So it feels like home, looking at it.

          not at all, Its not so bad on my screen but the shots were deliberately taken in shadow to show off the gloss/glow! (I'd like to add to all that the skin is nowhere near as jpeggy as shown in seven's screenie, Its just my lo-resolution web-ready image doesn't edit well...)

          Don't think I hadn't thunk about that.
          Although not on the original rfl I did originally envisage a thobbing glow or even a buzzy flash (ala q2 evolved's shotgun) its a bit out of my usual remit but I'd certainly appreciate a little help, regarding a shader that is...

            If you're open to suggestions would you consider some new skins for the painkeep mod? It's a good, fun, mod with a live server over over on the Flanders range of servers and would benefit from some nice new skins. Specifically things like the autosentries, beartraps, Chain LG and Nailgun and gravity wells. As It's a client side mod I'm sure you could let your imagination really go to town but it would be interesting to see what some of the talented artists here could produce particularly if it wasn't "shackled" to DP users only.

            Just a thought

                damn! not even heard of that one! I'll have to have a look!

                oh and monty, the main part of my skins can still be used in qrack and other engines with a simple rename, just fyi

                  It's a fun mod! Also, there is a version that has the Frikbots combined with it. I built waypoints for all the Painkeep maps.

                        Here is the version of Painkeep with Frikbots:

                        And here are some waypoints for the bots to actually navigate the maps, done by me (originally by Monster, but modified beyond recognition):

                        Just download the waypoint pack, and plop all the waypoints in the map folder. Don't worry if there are waypoints in there that you don't need; the game will only use the ones you have installed. The bots do a pretty incredible job navigating these maps. They will literally obtain every item and secret of every map!

                            As I recall there were 7 New Weapons with perhaps the Gravity Wells, Beartraps and the autosentries the most deserving of some of your TLC and artistic "rejuvenation". You should be able to get some information on the original mod from team evolve products along with the download. If you can't get a copy or need any information please let me know and I'll do my best to help. There is a server running over on flanders.quake1.net:26003 if you would like to test anything.

                              Not yet, but I was adding support for those a while back. I think I did 3 of them. Maybe I'll eventually get back to it! For now, I have so many other waypoints to complete.
