Interesting topic loaded since we are all ignorant to realize the effects of population growth are varied and vast. While population growth, of any species, may be beneficial to a certain extent, there may come a time when the number in the population exceeds the natural resources available to sustain it. This is referred to as overpopulation. The consequences of such an event are severe and major.

The population growth of any animal, if left uncontrolled can become burdensome. Farmers have noted, for many centuries, what the effects of an uncontrolled predator population can do to livestock. Once their natural prey run out, or are harder to find, the predators may turn to domesticated animals, despite the risks. This can cause a severe hardship on any family depending on those animals for survival.

However, when most think of a growing population, they do not think of other animals. The prime fear in most people's minds is the population growth of their own species. As humans leave a much larger footprint on the environment than any other creature, uncontrolled overgrowth can be especially devastating.

First, as the population grows the opportunities for quality, available housing may become an issue. More people crowded into less space is not a good combination in any locality. As space is taken up, it becomes more valuable. Eventually, it begins to affect to poorest in the area. In the long run the effect of population growth may be substandard housing or homelessness.

In other cases, access to food and clean water may be the main issue. This is an even more immediate problem than housing. As more people are faced with unsanitary sources of food, disease and famine begin to take root. If left unaffected, it will sweep through an entire population. In some cases, entire countries may be affected by the situation. Finding a solution often requires a multi-national effort.

Another negative effect of population growth is waste control. When there are relatively few people, controlling waste is a much simpler task. However, as populations grow, the waste increases dramatically. Finding a spot for this waste, or treating it in a way that does not poison the environment, is critically important. Regions of the world that do not have the ability to do this will find it leads to a number other serious issues and becomes a massive public health problem.

In general, the problem is not population growth in itself, it is a mismanagement of natural resources and waste that cause the majority of the problems. Many places have found effective strategies for dealing with such issues. Other locations, usually because of a lack of relative wealth, and perhaps engineering knowledge, have fallen behind.

        just a quick little note..

you cant compare NYC to Sweden, considering these facts...

NYC,The city's estimated population exceeds 8.2 million people living in just under 305 square miles (790 km)

Sweden, with an area of 173,732 square miles (approximately the size of the state of California), occupies the greater part of the Scandinavian Peninsula, which it shares with Norway

The human species is not a house built out of playing cards, anyone who thinks that has sadly mistaken. When human beings run into a problem, we solve it,at any cost

Over population is extremely fixable, and if you dont think so,then refer to the Rwanda Genocide in 1994,in which all of you reading this was alive for. We already live in societies where decisions are made for millions or even billions of people by a small select group, aka the goverment. What you should know is that dont think for a second that this is a proposterous idea, culling the weak from the herd has been a fact of life since the beginning of time, and will continue to occur, for whatever reason,be it politics, overpopulation,or the world succumbing to a dog-eat-dog world.

For example, Rwanda's pregenocide population was 7.4million, all tucked away in 10,169 square miles ,roughly 17 times smaller than Sweden, but with nearly the same population.
Thats about 700 humans to every square mile. I just google'd 700 people, and for ease of understanding, this photo claims to hold 600-700 people.

You dont have to be an evil person to initiate genocide, all you have to do is weight the needs of many and the future of the many, which happens everyday, just not on the subject of genocide

Sources for information courtesy Google cache, and the book entitled "The New Africa".

ps : I'm sure someone will be like "You got it wrong, the Rwanda Genocide occured because of blah blah blah"

My rebutle is 700 human beings surviving in 1 square mile of UNDEVELOPED country. Also take into consideration the amount of land required PER square mile (640acres are in a square mile) to to feed the population. Rwanda was completely overpopulated.

        Here is my supporting fact(s)
The average farm size was 449 acres during 2007, an increase of three acres from the previous year in the United States,a developed country, which can produce shitloads of foods for not only ourselves, but other people in other countries, and we are using tech-savvy equipment to til the ground, irrigate the fields, harvest the bounty, bail or prepare for shipment, and on and on. Rwanda I will presume from my research today,is still an under developed country and still experiences poverty and starvation, based on their agricultural website
Rwanda 's main aim of the Millenium Development Goals and Vision 2020 is to enable Rwandans to emerge from under-development and poverty status by achieving economic growth objectives in combination with social indicators objectives. One of the key aspects of these goals is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
--- Agriculture in Rwanda - Rwanda DG
They could not have sustained the pregenocide population,no matter how you tried to divide peoples housing,food/goods markets, and farming land AS IT WAS,meaning oldschool methods of sowing seeds, tilling earth, harvesting foods, etc.Sort of like trying to make 1 orange feed a family of 4,as the main course.

I thought I would also bring some more emphasis on 'culling the weak from the herd'.

This is in my opinion the number 1 cause of overpopulation,if you believe it exists today, because we no longer accept birth defects as acceptable reasons for allowing a death, and we do not accept disease and famine, and we do not tolerate crazy fuckers like hitler.Everyone wants to prevent a death,or atleast prolong it.With this mentality came a longer life expectancy, and where once upon a time the lifespan of a human was very short (refer to here) , and the turnover rate was much quicker,so therefor population growth was extremely slow.

Now that we can live well into our 80's and 90's, we are seeing 3rd and 4th,maybe even 5th generations of our offspring in our own lifetime.

Also, on the wiki Life expectancy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia there is a CIA factbook for life expectancys of the world, and if you will be so kind as to note Rwanda was not given a life expectancy range. You can come to your own conclusions about why.

Our bleeding hearts have caused the delimma, which is fine by me,your will to survive is only trumped by my will to survive,or the survival of my offspring. Children born of sickness or malformed, ie missing vital limb , or organs for survival, are being circumvented by our desire to "save every last damn human being on the planet".

This topic has eaten fucking 2.5 hours of my time, and I hate you all for it. Gimme back my god damn 2.5hours,could have wasted that shit more appropriately playing Quake.

Anyone know what life expectancy in the healthiest countries is expected to be 20-30, or 50 years from now, since the numbers are based on deceased people?

Also, interesting: The societies with the most longevity and highest number of people that make it to 100+ or 110+ tend to be communities with close knit extended family that work the land and stay physically active late in life, with a diet of fish, lean meats, and vegetables, NOT anti-social gamers or druggies obviously.

Sorry, the statistics are against us loners and left-handed types : (.

Population growth is a short term problem.

The internal population growth numbers in developed countries would result in population decline and this has been true for years, so all the growth in Western countries is net immigration.

Case in point, Japan and Russia face severe population declines in the future.

The "overpopulation scare" is like the "nuclear weapons scare" of 1960s-1980s, the "killer bees scare" of the 1970s, the "OMG all the oxygen comes from the Brazilian rain forest scare" [no, almost all oxygen comes from plankton and algae in the ocean] of the 1980s-1990s.

Another scare, another decade. The popular ones are "global warming" oops I mean "climate change" [because they discovered the sun is in a low cycle = cooling] and the "OMG population growth" which for people who haven't driven out in the countryside seems quite scarey.

Canada is far larger than the continental USA and only has about 25 million people.

North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana are all huge states with few people.

Just because a lot of assholes choose to cram it up in big cities doesn't mean the world is overpopulated, it just means a lot of people moved to where the jobs are.

If you live in the USA and think it is overpopulated, do a coast-to-coast flight and look out the window. That green stuff that you see for 95% of the flight is called trees.

the only place you can see extreme population being in action is little places like Tokyo,Japan.

                            Just for comparison

                            "City" alone
                            Tokyo
                            -Area: 2,187.08 (621.81) km
                            -Population: 12.8 million
                            -Density: 5,847 /km

                            NYC
                            - area: 1,214.4 km2 (this stat is for city, it lists many stats idk which one i should use)
                            - Population: 8.2 million
                            - Density: 10,482/km2

                            Metro areas
                            Tokyo
                            - Area: 13,754 km2
                            - Population: 34.4 million
                            - Density: 2,516/km2

                            NYC

                            - Population: 18.8 million

Am I a Republican? The anti-science party? Nice passive-aggressive attempt at a swipe at me. That's called an ad-hominem attack where you attack the speaker and not the facts at issue.

Believe me you, I know 100x more about science than perhaps one day you might be fortunate enough to know.

And real science is done with statistics, studies and research -- not OMG cause celebre! with feely emotionally people with no expertise trumping up issues they are told are problems.

They didn't change the name away from global warming for no reason. Baker +1.
