      The "serious answer":

Society would break down quick ...

So I would buy lots of guns and dogs and head to the country. Low population density, dogs = a 24/7 early warning system.

Cities and suburbs would become very dangerous, very quickly. The structure of our civilization would cease to function in high population areas that can artificially support high population densities because of water systems, stores (food distribution).

You take away electricity: Cities and suburbs would degrade into chaos.

Or the philosophical "answer" if you intended the scope as a philosophical or entertainment question:

I'm so used to fast access to knowledge, free information, easy access to alternate opinions ... it would be tough.

Mentally, everyone would have to lower the bar of expectations dramatically to something less where mere survival would be something of merit (like the 1800s).

Water? I'd get as many water filtering devices that didn't require electric as quickly as possible.

A week ago, a lot of Ohio lost power due to the storms and had 100 degrees high humidity weather. OMG ... liquids.

This is the reason i go hunting, camping, and have 3 - 55 gallon drums of gasoline on hand other then for hurricane season - florida). You need to know survival methods just in case. I have friends who would be lost trying to live outside a city especially with no electricity. I live 19 miles outside of the nearest city on 5.27 acres and love it. Good subject to bring up r00k. Also im with baker on the water cleaning systems.. Keep tin/metal cans on hand and learn how to start a fire, condensation from boiling water is natural purification at its best. Good thing i live in a county full of springs.

Generator uses what to run off of? No electricity no gas no generator.
Unless you use new technology like solar panels or magnetic fields.. Either way you would need a way to power that generator, does not run by itself. You could run steam generated generators, still need a way to pump it in unless your going to hand load it. Either way, without electricity (even amish are using it now) this world is doomed.

Ya I like to watch survivor-man , and there's some new post modern tv show coming out along these lines. I think one could cope with basic knowledge, starting a fire, etc etc. But, like Baker mentioned, once you get the groups that conform to irrational decisions all chaos will happen. You could still make electricity with a hand crank device; a lot of people would start to respect life a bit more.

I live in florida where we go without power all the time, nobody is killing anyone over it either. If we look at New Orleans however we see an entirely different story with a total meltdown of society after just one hurricane. Go figure.
A still can be setup and running in a day and it only takes 3 days to ferment sugar so anyone with any skills at all can replace gas and the electric company in short order in an emergency. There will be no zombie apocalypse.

Stop watching the news. I live here and there was no total meltdown of society. During the storm there was a lot of drama (mainly caused by criminals). Also, it wasn't "just one hurricane" it was a cat 4 hurricane (which is as high as the chart goes) that hit us dead on. The only supposed "meltdown of society" was actually caused by the military as they made it increasingly difficult to go anywhere or do anything.

People were trying to re-open their businesses and get back to life just to have armed MILITARY tell them that they cannot do that. You couldn't ride your bike to the park without cops & military stopping you, searching you (without cause or warrant), confiscating things that are not illegal to own (like my lighter) and then demanding that you go back "home".

The whole country saw on the news what the people at the top wanted you to see, brought to you in a way that "changed" the actual facts (ie, they lied to you). I was here. I know exactly what happened and FEMA, MILITARY & COPS played a huge part in making it a struggle to return to normalcy. I was told on numerous occasions by police and military that I am not allowed to go to work. Guess what my job was - REBUILDING THE DAMN CITY!!

Imagine trying to out fox the military on your way to work, just so you can go to work. I had some snot nose kid (military) point his rifle at me and demand that I acknowledge curfew laws. I said "There is no fuckin curfew law! This is America ya' fuckin idiot and you are pointing your gun at a fellow American! What are you gonna do - shoot me if I'm not in by 10?!"

And if you were in katrina and survived without leaving new orleans, you were lucky, i seen the aftermath of it all, i hauled relief supplies for 3 weeks to new orleans and surrounding areas.

Once sugar runs out, the complexity of that plans starts rising. Creating sugar or sugar-like substances in any quantity requires an agricultural infrastructure of some sort, even if on a personal scale.

so anyone with any skills at all can replace gas and the electric company in short order in an emergency.
Ethanol doesn't burn cleanly, leaves a lot of residue in an engine. One reason that we aren't using ethanol powered vehicles.

For several months it would be worse than a zombie apocalypse in massive urban areas and the surroundings, there would be shortages of everything and the high population density would make it impossible to keep order.

However, after a year or 2 some sort of new equilibrium would be in place.

Most of the non-survivable people would have died by then (the softies or the unfortunate unlucky) and most of the parasites preying on other humans for their resources (the criminals) would have been eliminated.

And we would have successfully adapted.

Ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline by miles.
And you can make it from almost anything even grass.
If Mad is correct which I don't doubt if he was there, then Florida is not alone in it's response and is in fact the norm.Man can live without electric believe it or not.
The cat 5 Hurricane Andrew that hit Miami made Katrina look mild in comparison.
Nothing over 18 inches stood over the entire southern end of Florida, thousands died in it despite what was broadcast on the news.
One tank and a few national guard is all it took to secure the area.
Electric was not restored for months.
I'd have to say Miami being one of the biggest metro areas in the country that this scenario has come and gone.Still here fraggin!
