  • Odd Shortwave Radio stations

This is really odd, but cool in a way.
My favorite is The backwards music station.

Shortwave Radio Oddities Roundup - YouTube
              About the 3 tones.
I used those exact sounds as my answering machine greeting.
What it did was block telemarketers and any computer based phishing would not only drop the caller but remove me from their database of potential chumps.
Shortwave and radio in general has always been a hobby of mine long before I had a computer. At 5 years old I would wait till everyone went to sleep and then slip quietly out of the house and climb into my pops cars to listen to the AM radio all night and slip back into bed near sunrise. My dad never did figure out why he had to jump his car so often!
The most interesting things could be heard in the static between stations,A distress call from a sinking ship that went down 50 years prior and sometimes folks reported they could even contact their dead relatives!
Thomas Edison worked until he died on just such a radio and over the years some very creepy recordings were made.
George meeks comes to mind with his work on the spiricom.

Shortwave radios can be bought at Radio Shack for $40 US and up. Hopefully the employee knows what they are... Back when I lived in a desert (not a desolated one), I used to listen through stations... I remember one that had me stunned for a bit until I realized it was a recording of some spooky sounds being played on repeat.

Much more fun is a RTLSDR (rtl-sdr ? OsmoSDR , 10$ on ebay from China, better buy two right away) together with a upconverter (Round-Up of RTLSDR Upconverter Choices | KF7LZE's Blog , ~50$). Then you can do anything from longwave over shortwave to very and ultra high frequency. And you could see 2 MHz of spectrum simultaneously!

You can track airplanes and ships. With the right antenna you can receive satellite images straight from the source. Pagers, weather stations, several things that might be illegal in your jurisdiction, etc etc

Check out websdr.org for some online fun.

They're making words illegal now?! Which one was the illegal one? I wanna say it.

Yes that is indeed an awsome bargain but you need to be a linux user to take advantage of it.An since I am,I thank You Spirit !!!
The alternative to get this same functionality costs thousands of dollars and is very hard to come by these days as everything is converted to digital and the frequencies sold off to cell and data use.
Can you imagine this small usb stick plugged into an iphone capturing a 2GB spread spectrum swath as a cheap ELP recorder?
I am interested in combining this tech with digital camera tech.I would like to increase the ability of a camera to take advantage of the upper spectrum of UV the way we have been able to use the lower IR swath.Combined with IR and UV and add this wide spectrum frequency capture to it would be the shit.
And undoubtedly illegal as all getout.
