I am amazed at you Rambo, srsly brah.I don't understand how you can enjoy CTF and at the same time,be so selfish that you create a limiting barrier between a true REVIVAL of CTF.

when you mentioned how you'd rather hook an empty server than play with classic mode / 4 rune,I laughed.

Ogre Citadel rocks for one on one.
Honestly, ever since version 1.0 of CRCTF there's been "scrim" classic mode.

Title : ClanRing CTF Home Server
      Filename : crctf28.zip
      Version : 2.8D
      Date : 1/21/98

      Description of the Modification
      -------------------------------

This meant to be a "Clanring CTF Home Server", a
server that was meant to be run on non-clanring servers, but
could be used as a Clanring server when needed. This mod is
designed to work as a standard CTF server 70% of the time, and
a clanring CTF server 30% of the time.

The Clanring CTF Home server gives clans an enhanced way to play matches, a rally timer for even starts, enhanced stats and scoring and easily
accessible server settings with a simple 4 digit admin code. It can also function as a regular Threewav CTF4 server in skirmish mode while giving
the ability for players to warp to any level they choose. Most servers will prolly be set to run in skirmish mode on the servers public port and in
Clanring mode on the private port.
You have just evolved past that type of gameplay. Newbs need the instant gratification of being able to compete. Vets can still stomp a newb that has Quad, or any rune. But it allows them to do more than spawn, hook for 12 seconds and die.
The core difference between match and scrimmage mode, is the set timer.
MAtch = start and end by time, disallowing anyone to join during the game with an unlimited score.
Scrim(classic) = start playing when the map loads, or a player connects. Connecting players are forced to the losing team or if score is even then the team with less players. The game ends at 150points, or 30 minute time.
I'm surprised, in MATCH mode we dont have TEAMDAMAGE. Invulnerability to teammates is newbified from day one.
As for map rotation, and all the other settings for classic mode, it's all configurable by the admin. He can setrunes off, choose what maps to be loaded, pretty much everything.

but if you notice on the servers used no admin takes the time to bother to configure classic mode map rotation. Why? Cause no one usually uses it. Idk why there is a big stink about wanting to use classic mode lately. I know mindz wants runes, but usually the only one throwing it into classic mode is Armorattak. Prior to him coming back to ctf 2-3 months ago, no one (atleast that I seen) put the servers on classic mode. I think match mode provides a more fair enviroment then classic. (understandably its still unfair usually no matter which way) but timed starts makes sure everyones ready to go and no "head starts."

True, the old classic mode was built in the manner of FFA. Zoid originally made a deathmatch FFA mod, that offered the 4 runes, and a hook. He later got the idea to make a sub-gamemode of CTF on his custom server. It was so popular that he rebuilt his server-mod solely to accommodate CTF. Thus Quake1 CTF was born. As clans were becoming popular, and the 'clanring' (a webring ) organized scheduled matches, a new mod was created by these guys: John Bock (Disciple)/Steven Possehl (Marmot)/Joel Baxter (Lemurboy)/Chris Thielen (Someone). Servers like HATING, AnyComp, MTown, Intertex, Admor, etc all used the original Zoid (3wave) CTF, all tweaked in someway to make each server unique. Servers like Teamplay, Jurrasic, Erols, HatingS, ClanHDZ, etc used the CRCTF mod.
So a lot of players get confused about CRCTF and 3wave ctf since both mods share the core ctf code by Zoid, and the custom maps, models, and sounds of 3wave.

Rambo, nothing wrong with throwing it on classic mode and playing a bunch of games. I kind of miss the runes as well. They were a staple of the old threewave days, until the newer players started playing with them off.

cuz PRE-IHOC days , I was a an Hating exclusive player.I sucked something ferocious back then too,but I never downloaded custom maps or had immediate access to them,so I remained nonstop at the classic CTF Hating server's for EVER.

I'm happy to play CTF all together, but you can't deny the power of a CTF server running on classic mode,it allows the server to fill up and keep each player that connects, rather than..

                  playerX has connected
                  t w e n t y - m i n u t e s
                  waiting :::yawn::: waiting
                  playerX has disconnected

Keep the runes turned off I dont care, just have it openly accessible, and the newcomers join losing team feature only makes sure the games arent being lopsided. If you play it,they will come!!!

I understand Rambo's tension towards classic mode.

I remember looking at Trinicom, through QView, seeing a full server 90% of the day. I thought to myself, "Wow all these newbs can play ctf but they are constantly stuck on that server with a useless hook and rotating items!".
I mean you could strafe-wiggle faster than that hook would fire! I'd jump on there and end up in 1st or second, but after 1 game and constantly pullin a kimp, "anyone for CRCTF?", i'd leave, back to my idle server...

Don't worry... John Rambo ain't the boss of us! He doesn't run any servers, either. So we can classic mode all day and he can pout and leave to hook around on empty servers. Win/win?

                      j/k brah.

well, now that we have voiced our sage and diplomatic opinions and each of us have been quite swayed by them - back to what we were doing before?

anyone tried frenzy's server? ganja smoke in the hallways on elder hasn't cleared yet?

its not crashing... its warping though all the maps on levels.cfg

This is preventing people from connecting in classic mode

its up now in match mod. Only thing I did was add "faststarton" to the cmdline in match mode. Dont know if this would effect classic
