Wow. Did I not say at least? I don't know about the rest of you but I have a job. No need to be complete dickheads when I post my opinion on something. Jesus H Christ man.

Certainly I wouldn't be the only one playing it. 15 bucks a month is what WoW heads pay to collect fake gold.

And yes, respawning with all weapons is NOT the deathmatch I'm talking about. People should read posts before spouting off and acting like an ass hat. I know for a fact I'm not the only one in the Q1 scene who feels this way. Do you have the same attitude toward them if they decide to talk about it?

Sorry I can't offer more than 30 minutes minimum on a computer game every day. You guys know for a fact I would clock in waaay more than that on weekends. More than enough to make up for a whole half an hour during the week I would spend on said server.

Yeah, I'm not going to lie. I'm a bit shocked at the needless attitude.

I like this idea... if R00k wins the lotery I guess he will build up a team to make something like that.

Q1 will evolve (evloluate) s00n or later... keep it in mind!!

Think League of Legends and World of Tanks.

Someone should open up a free to play quake website (shareware or whatever) and pitch it as such.

It's easy to see why these games are popular:
      1. Free - easily accessable download/tutorials
      2. PlayerVPlayer associated
      3. National/Worldwide rankings
      4. All inclusive website for getting started (dedicated web pages for help rather than forum searches)
      5. Scheduled events/tournaments

Re-vamp the quake clients to integrate with some sort of player database where stats are updated in real-time and can be viewed directly from the website - think quakelive. There also needs to be a social networking (facebook) style aspect to it. Players log into the website, see one another, chat, get games going and whatnot. I love forums as much as the next guy, but they're snail mail in comparison to say...battlefield 3's battlelog.

I've seen a flash quake all over the internet, but it is not multiplayer supported and it has serious mouse issues. (2005 post here about it)

I don't even think a full version of quake is required to hook people, just a flash version that connects to one of several shareware servers would do the job nicely.

People like to be able to hop onto a server with no downloads required. But at the same time you can't make money off of it, if it even SMELLS like you are competing with Quakelive you'll see how quickly a website can get shut down.

here's three separate methods to port quake to the web, with varying amounts of success.
flash is another. boo software rendering! boo!
            QuakeDead :s
            mmm salty :s
            emscripten port :s
first one can connect to any server you want (its basically native code). the other two are limited to websocket connections only.
(note: fteqw can run a quake-websocket server via 'sv_port_tcp 27500', which should then allow both nacl and emscripten ports to connect to the server, in addition to regular clients)
            So... choose your poison.
Oh, and for the luls, hexen2

You could get money from adverts I guess, but that would turn away half your users easily (yay adblock, wait, where did my revenue go?).
One thing that just isn't there compared to quakelive is the matchmaking and rankings stuff. If a noob joins a QW server, they'll die 50 times before they even get any kills. Its kinda brutal like that. :s Keeping people within their own skill range would be a very good idea...

Well thanks! I'll look into all 3 of those.

Yes well your point about matching skill may not be as easy as it seems.

By the way, when I 'attempted' Quakelive on a newly created account I selected SKILL MATCHED on the server picker. Entered one, I was getting pit against players who not only had pro-aim but also bunny hopped around the level at tremendous speed, running over each powerup at the instant it spawned.

I typed "[email protected]" and quit that one. Several more attempts and I could not for the life of me find a game in which people wern't gods amoung the living.

That right there is the line where casual players quit (AND NEVER COME BACK) and hardcore players get more determined.

So I turned that game off and installed Quake 3, played it with bots on hard to train up a bit and remember what is where.

              So, problems with skill matching:
1 - It rarely works properly
2 - What's to stop people from restarting constantly to roflstomp noobs for fun?

q3 bots blow hard. when there not running around with an empty weapon, they're trying to kill you with the gauntlet.

Yup! But good luck re-learning a level layout when you spawn, die, spawn, die, spawn, die...

                    *CLASSIC DM*

No runes, no extra power ups, I'm talking vanilla DM. 4/8 *maybe* 16 players since networks are faster now.
None of that start with all the weapons and ammo stuff. I'm talking pure DM. No grappling hooks. You hunt for weapons, camp power ups, rocket jump. The stuff where true skill lies. I'd try to DM every day at LEAST for 30 minutes if such a server existed.

Rune quake and arenas are all fine and dandy. Rune quake in particular has a skillset that doesn't seem like 'Quake' to me. It's more about who has the best runes and can spam the most gas grenades. It lacks a certain feeling of accomplishment winning with that mod in my opinion. I got three kills because I had some kind of a weird mod rune my rocket launcher. Had that happened in vanilla DM i probably would've talked some shite. Instead, I was thinking, well, that was pretty dumb.

                    Eh, sorry for the rant.
I know this is old, but what it sounds like you want is classic FFA, the closest thing there is to that are the european servers flanders.quake1.net:26001 and bigfoot.quake1.net.

Don't forget the FFANY tournament server which runs 24x7 in New York. It is virtually the same as Bigfoot just so far without some special server "magic" (cough *Peg*, cough ). Just type connect ffany.quakeone.com:26000 in console, press return and you're there

                      Hope this helps

I'd play more, but I either have no fun on eu servers because there's no challenge or there's nobody on when I'm about. (I'd love a nice UK server to muck about on with some DM action).

That and my ping to US servers is simply painful. (300+, but that's not something I blame on the servers, my isp is pretty bad)

I think the last UK server was GCHQ but that went the way of the dodo years ago. Bigfoot or Flanders are probably your best bet. Flanders gives me 25-50 ping from the UK and although I try to avoid bigfoot 40-50 ping is around the normal ping. If you have to go to Bigfoot look out for players like Peg, Polarite, Stalker, Dude and Confuzed as they are very skilled, usually very sporting and friendly and should at least give you the challenge you appear to be looking for

If it's any guide, I usually ping 130 to 170 on Shmack and 100-120 on NYC/FFANY (same server) from the UK, and my ISP is pretty poor as far as latency goes. Are you on wireless by any chance?

                          Kind regards

Oh, I missed the whole social interface chat bit, which I spoke to Mark about via email and I pretty much went over my ideas with that.

It's happening, but I can't publicly say "this is a thing" until it's a thing. You get me?

But there is something happening and to test it I'll be using vanilla players or people who've not played quake before. But it'll have a bumpy start due to it's high skill cap nature.

                            anyway, something IS coming.

oh and yeah, I'm on a wireless connection. But most my games would give me about 40-80 ping for a local server. So I'll check those out

The active dm community at that time who played daily was about 40, and today that is about 10, which is 1/4, about the same ratio of the amount of servers now and then.
I feel that your OP is very informative. I just want to point out this section I quoted here, and say that I feel there were much more than 40 people playing NetQuake daily back in 1998. Maybe I'm wrong, but I would say there were over a thousand players playing NetQuake, and probably hundreds of those played DM.

LOL.. I remember in 97'98'99 every DM server was at max capacity 16 players per server every night between 6pm-Midnight all week and weekend. CTF servers which i rarely ever touched were also packed also the FFA servers and ihoc servers. It is safe to say that on any give n day we had jam packed servers. Between 96-99 i hosted 8 servers on a t3 out of florida. 26000-26007 and we had matches left and right on all ports for CRMOD(TDM).. 26000/26001 were hard to get into due to max players being 16 and always full.. from east to west quake was jamming nightly. I use to get on after school around 4pm and play until 2am nightly. Those were the days and i dont think enoch existed back then. I was 12 years old in 96 and remember it all to well even at age 30 now of how it was.. i day dream about those days alot and wish it was still like it.. matter fact go to Clan Neptune - Homepage and click on DM matches then click on the little * next to any match and you can download some old demos of NP clan. Some links are broken but theres a good 20 that still work. I am NP-striker- if you find the ones with me in it.. HPB to the max!
