  • Quake Expo Booth

QuakeOne has a Quake Expo Booth, that Yellow made back on day 1 of the Expo.

Sir Banks-A-Lot has a Qradio booth (and a custom title now, he's done a lot of Qradios and those QuakeOne Squads are hilarious). Even Monster has a booth!

But about half the things going on here or around the community didn't have anyone make a booth (yeah, we're all busy).

I ended up making a booth for myself with some of the things I've worked on, but also put in a lot of sub-sections in it so things like CAx, Qrack, RQuake and other things have a presence at the Quake Expo and other things like Rune Quake, GameStatus.Net and JoeQuake.

And I heard that QuadRaptor has a booth with his stories. I'm going to go take a look.. See what is there. I don't have anything to contribute to a booth..

Foqer's words may be technically right, but I dislike him and will demean him by saying that his name and persona make his words all but worthless.

The quake expo seems neat but too confined.

I liked the days of planetquake where people could host projects and offer fast downloads without the downloader services that plague gaming sites today.

I think it would be neat if quake had a sourceforge type site. Setup the enignes, textures, mods, etc all in one place for people to view and contribute. If done right, we wouldn't have to worry about sites disappearing or individual's hard drives failing.

kdbrate - The QExpo is confined to the extent of peoples enthusiasm and willingness to keep such going. With a finish date, it also gives people the will to be so gung-ho, because it wont be perpetual. I was able to do the news daily and keep an eye on the booths, organize information and answer questions on irc for 11 days straight because it was 11 days. Sajt was only willing to devote such time to the PHP because he would not have to maintain it indefinitely himself. QExpo as a website is generally brought to you by a handful of people, generally a cluster of folks from inside3d.

The times you are yearning for have been crippled by PlanetQuake's decision to capitalize on the other Quakes and eventually other games. The downloader services that plague gaming sites these days have been the spawn of IGN and Gamespy, you want to host your files beyond your own personal webspace as long as theyre Quake related ? http://quake.errorabove.com/ Error of inside3d has shelled out a good chunk of his own money for such (paying in advance to give him some leeway in the odd chance of him losing his job).

Want hosting? Quakedev.com has it http://www.quakedev.com/hosting/
Quakesrc.org hosts a few people as well... Inside3d would host more but as I understand it, there are complications with Telefragged and such.

We are still feeling the ripples of PlanetQuake ignoring Quake for Quake2, and then that for Quake3. They are working back towards acknowledging the original, and have done a good job - but there is the fact that for a long time, Quake fans didnt know where to go, and it is still hard to find a place. Quaddicted is typically a wonderful resource but right now it is not fully functional due to some script kiddies.

Honestly, if you want a return to the old days (which I pine for), then upload any old mods you have to the Quake archive that Error has (make sure its not in there yet, to save time), maps that arent on there, wads, engines, etc etc. Share the wealth of Quake that you have, and when you see something relevant to Quake and its not up on the sites, submit the news! I know Inside3d has a news submission form, and it does get checked regularly (even though my computer is down, I still login there daily and will make news posts as I catch them).

If done right, we wouldn't have to worry about sites disappearing or individual's hard drives failing.
The thing is, all it took was PlanetQuake to institute the horror of FilePlanet, Walnut Creek Archive to go down, and a few other things, and we are in our current state. This really is a scenario of pulling ourselves up by our own bootstraps.
                          Inside3d - Because you can't be Outside 3D!

I see scar3crow has recovered his stamina from Quake Expo.

Man, that must have been tough to do. (And you did a kick ass job).

It is a lot of work even doing a single news item here (the kind with a lot of links/gfx, not the text only style ones), I can't imagine how hard it was doing 2 or 3 everyday for nearly 2 weeks.

Yeah, I think their mistake was treating Quake like other publisher titles. How many people still care about say Kingpin? I never tried it and there were few sites on planetquake related to it. Quake isn't the same as those.

Yes I've thought about getting a subscription for a month or however long it takes me to archive everything quake related. They don't have control over the software that they mirror.

Thanks, I think I'll look into that. Most of what I do related to quake is source code though. Quakedev.com or quakesrc.org sounds more appropriate.

What's the complication with Telefragged? I never could find a mirror for that.

Unfortunately, I discarded all of my quake archives about 5 years ago. I thought I was out of gaming and especially these old quake files. I was completely wrong. I'm sure I had useful files because I'm having a hard time finding them again. The longer I wait, the more 404s I'm seeing.

I did this with Spirit. We compared our planetquake archives to make sure we had the same files from different sources.

Unfortunately, what I have now is not unique so it's not helpful for others. I think there are two directions for me to go: 1) Find out what is very useful, getting rare, and archive it, or 2) create new useful things through coding.
