WTF.com , seriously. Isn't this taking the "American Dream" a bit too far? What a complete waste of Arizona tax dollars. Quite personally I think there has been way to much leniency on the over-all idiot portion of the population.

Another example are these anti-war protesters who would protest the various military conflicts we are involved in,at the funerals of fallen soldier's.

These types of people just need to be dragged into the yard and given a old fashioned ass whoopin,Yes even those 50-something grandma and grandpa need their asses whipped in the front yard for acting such fools. Every last one of them needs a chin check.

If the US goverment does not endorse entering our country illegally then there needs to be some slack let out on our ability to put a stop to it,especially in that refenced case of rancher vs illegals. I personally would prefer supplying this guy with some ammo and turning him loose as border law enforcer

I believe the Mexicans are in the wrong.

A.> entering the country illegally, thus making them criminals, having no rights.
b.> Trespassing, the rancher has the right to bear arms, and protect his land, home, and family.
c.> The rancher is not at fault for detaining fugitives until the authorities arrive.

Am I the only one who finds irony in first the mention of anti-war protests, then the mention of entering other countries illegaly? Surely the US government (or at least it's representatives) has been entering other countries illegally for quite some time now?

I work in immigration so I think about this stuff a lot. I could go on and on, so I'll try to restrain myself.
I looked up the law on citizen's arrests in Arizona. It states:

A private person may make an arrest:
1. When the person to be arrested has in his presence committed a misdemeanor amounting to a breach of the peace, or a felony.
2. When a felony has been in fact committed and he has reasonable ground to believe that the person to be arrested has committed it.

Arizona Revised Statues, chapter 13, section 3884

It sounds like the crimes of most of the 12,000 people he detained were limited to jumping the border and trespassing. Neither of these is a felony, nor does either of them amount to "a breach of the peace". For the law on entering without inspection, see United States Code, title 8, section 1325. For Arizona trespassing laws, see Arizona Revised Statutes, chapter 15. Since these crimes are neither felonies nor breaches of the peace, he cannot legally do a citizens arrest and he is indeed violating their civil rights. He is apparently taking out his anger at the few who damaged his property on the whole lot of them.

I find the thought of private individuals taking it upon themselves to systematically and regularly enforce the law to be a pretty terrifying prospect. This guy is armed, has no training in law enforcement, and clearly hasn't taken the time to research the legality of his holding 12,000 people at gunpoint. I don't think illegal activity should be combated by illegal enforcement techniques--just as I disagreed with Bush's adoption of extremism in the fight against extremism. However, people who rant about "illegals" usually don't care much about the law (research Joe Arpaio), and I think are generally scapegoating and cloaking their racism in a thin legalistic veneer. From a technical perspective, the term "illegal immigrant" is meaningless. There are many different degrees of illegality, and many "illegals" could easily become legal if they just took the time to fill out some forms. The law does not lump them all together, and it's unfortunate the political debate can't encompass such distinctions. Oh yeah, and the constitution applies to all people in the country, not just American citizens. Rook, you're wrong when you say that criminals have no rights.

That said, the man is obviously responding to the Border Patrol's inability to police our border. So, for me it points to the need for comprehensive immigration reform.

As do I, so long as they actually go through the process that real immagrants go through, and our ancestors went through at the time that poem was written. Go through the process, assimilate, become an American. They shouldn't just stroll over here, expect us to learn thier language, support them with our tax money, oh no, they must assimilate, become Americans (legally) and work just as hard and put up with just as much crap as we do.

Imagine this: while you are asleep at night, someone quietly sneaks/breaks into your house, heats up some of your leftovers from last night's dinner, and falls asleep on your living room couch. You wake up in the morning and you see him sleeping on your couch while on your way to your kitchen to pour yourself a bowl of delicious Frosted Flakes™. You stare at him and yell "what the fuck are you doing in my house?!" and he replies "Que? Hablas espanol?". How would you feel? This is pretty much what's going on every day here in America, only at a much larger scale.

It's sad, but after reading some other posts here, I feel as though I must clarify that my statement is, in fact, non-racial, since racisim is tossed around like a ball in a child's game of Catch these days. I was hoping it wouldn't reach this discussion but it already has. Ahem... I don't give a fuck what country the illegal immigrants come from. I don't care if they're coming from outer space. An illegal immigrant in an illegal immigrant, no matter what thier ethnicity. It just so happens that our illegal immigrant problem is coming from Mexico (thus the Mexicans) because they are so geographically close to us and it's easy for them to just waltz on over here.

hell id try my best to run to this country as well, if i was in most of these people positions. You guys don't understand how these other places are toward people and how hard it is just to be able to get close enough to this country to flee here. Home of the free heart of the brave, and just so you know i have family that fought in 3 wars to keep this country great... and you can't without an honest heart look at a veteran and tell him he done something wrong and diss his grand children for being from other countries and if you look at me and say something like that your mouth will come off your face period.
