  • HD mdl Skins!!

The textures are at least twice as big as stock Quake's.

They were individually crafted with photoshop, and none were simply enlarged

They look great ingame! At least Quake 2 or Half-Life texture Quality!

People generally won't say too much without using them or at least seeing ingame shots.

You also might get more hits if you put things like this in the "Mod Releases" forum. They have a release and WiP subforum.

I like how this is sort of like a semi-HD texture job. It barely strays from the original work (the lack of blood is a bit confusing but oh well) and still proceeds to make the texture just a wee-bit sharper. An interesting exercize, I bet they'll look good in something like FTEQuake or Qurack

Maybe you need to do it yourself and compare them
Do it your way - enlarging the texture with a smoothing filter then sharpening - and you'll end up with some fuzzy high-contrast looking trash

Or how I did it - a non-filtered enlarging, then painting over with photoshop, liquifying and fixing every pixel and smoothing over any "stairs" manually, applying overlap textures - a very noticable difference (Espcially in my Chthon and shambler)

              Also
The original textures were 75% perfect, all they needed were some small fixes to make them 100% Quake. All those "HD/original" textures that others have made are really unQuake looking, at all.

Didn't you guys see the Chthon and death knight ingame shots?

My only thing to say is yes you resized and retouched. Now you need to add more details - subtle details. Right now they are very "smooth". Ogre/Vore/Fiends skin need to look more leathery. With higher resolutions - it adds more area to make things more detailed. It would be like making these skins 1024x1024 and then applying the same methods you did and then saying they are HD. Add more details and this would be great.

Also demanding comments or even expecting them isn't good. Hell alot of my recent work has had zero comments and I am fine with. I made them for myself - I just share them for others to use. They like good, they use Great! They don't oh well.

I've tried textures that big, but mdls only support a max texture height of 512.

I agree and disagree: It's true... I didn't spend as much time on the ogre or death knight, but to say I "retouched" is a significant understatement. I mean, most of them look as if they were the original textures that Adrian Carmack made before he downsized them in the final product. - I've applied very light overlay textures, because anymore and the mdls may appear too different.

It just annoys me that there is a positive co-relation between the flashyness/shinyness of a skin and the number of people that comment on it. In other words, because my skins don't have specular/normal maps or are not 2048*2048, nobody truly cares

Many reasons for that could simply be they want it replaced - redone.
See the Reforged project looks GREAT, great artists in that group. However sadly even still using their skins - overall still doesn't look too great. The reason being is simple - the models are WAY too low poly for those skins.
As for the 2048x2048 textures - take a look at the models I've done - you will notice I mainly only use 512x512 - 1/8th of 2048x2048. I only need 512x512 because the more detail is done via the model in which is rendered ingame with shadows and all - making it look more realistic. You can skin the vore's breasts and make the shading below. Looks great (this is a example), however the shadow is static. So lets say she walks on a bridge which has NO lighting up top but the lighting is rather at the bottom of the bridge on the trim - should the shadows now still be at the bottom? Or should the bottom be more lit and have the top of them now shadowed. Top should be now.
Don't get me wrong, the skins are great and meant for those who want high fps and original look. However after seeing people's comments on Seven and I's stuff - many people want remodels/remakes.

I love these skins, however I would urge you to try doing at least some normal mapping - as even with the old models - you CAN do the lighting I mentioned.

Part two of the HD skins!
Covers all the models I missed - except Shub

Male, Female we both have breasts - but men prefer to call them "pecks". Males are just much more flatter.
If you didn't like that example - use my same logic but apply it to the armor and the "chest" area.

They look like you took the originals, re-sized them and ran them through a filter.

Can someone mock up a tech demo of this, cos I pretty much get what you're saying but I can't quite visualise it properly. Perhaps a chain-mail bikini would help?
