  • Witcher 2 , zomg?

Anyone else tried this game yet? It's taxing my dual gpu and quad core something unheard of.....

I'm seeing my gpu's reach over 100~c , and both GPU's run at 100%. Holy crap?

Witcher2 can easily become "the" benchmark, considering I've been reading that people with far superior hardware than mine are having the same issue's, 100% usage of their GPU's (even Trifire setup's are showing 100% usage across all 3!)

This game is fun,and I enjoy it thoroughly but im weiry about "just playing" , I am constantly monitoring temperatures and not liking what I see.

    OOF!

    and its all DX9 !?!?!?

over 100C? Sounds dangerous :\. Dust em out or buy some more case fans. Maybe a couple of those PCI-VGA cooler cards will help. I used to use one, lowered the temp by about 10C.

heh, Darkplaces without a framerate limit and running no custom stuff brings my GPU close to 100% load (HD 5870). I think any game that lets the framerate run unbounded will bring your GPU to 100% or close to 100% load.

Any game where the FPS isn't capped will probably bring any GPU to 100% or close to it, the GPU is trying to render as many frames as possible, so it's working at its max to do so.

I have the Witcher and the Witcher 2, both decent games. haven't beaten The Witcher 2 yet, I stopped playing it at one point. The original witcher was much better I thought. But yeah, awesome eye candies. Just don't use ubersampling and you should be able to run it fine . Runs great for me maxed with no ubersampling. Ubersampling drops me to probably around 20fps in that beginning intro dragon scene ;\ I hate playing a game where my FPS isn't a constant 60 or above

Maybe i'll install it again and try to beat it.

Seriously, dust your case out. Your heatsinks are probably packed with dust. I would also be checking to make sure your fans are actually spinning up to cool the card down when something's taxing it. Try this tool:

      Download TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.5.5 | techPowerUp

Go to the sensors tab, and tick the box that says "continue refreshing this screen while gpu-z is in the background"

Watch the fan speed, that will tell you if your fans are working properly or not.

My fans speeds are on 100% duty cycles all of the time, GPUZ yes already knew that

Well, check. Nothing should be loading your card to 100*c at 100% fan speed. If they are in fact running at 100%, then it's probably time to dust your heatsinks out.

After checking and processing visually how the airflow is currently arranged, I just realized there is a better place for my large case fan (right in front of both gpu's, blowing both across top - middle - bottom of both cards evenly. I'll clean them tomorrow, I'm going to be moving a case fan into a much better position, from the back near PSU to front , which will be right in front of both gpu's and should cool them off dramatically better.

the door fan and cpu hsf (push/push) are more then enough to keep the cpu heat under control, but... fuck, Witcher 2 basically has made it a requirement to re arrange my fan setups because of the cards are choking themselves out with heat.

its more annoying than anything heh.

this shows where my case fan is currently located, exhausting off CPU heat. Which is pointless since my PSU is also exhausting off heat as well right above it.

when im done it will look similar to this image

My motherboard fills the entire case, and my GPU's are stacked at the bottom, with near zero airflow aside from what the gpu fans do on their own, which is basically bathe in each others heat.

I might even have a extra case fan I can just add to the mix rather than moving shit around.

If possible you should use one of these under each card:

Fox-2 System Blower for PCI Slot Computer Cooler Fan PC | eBay

At least that will put out the hot air directly near the GPUs. Also you should hook up a fan (first picture) where all the motherboard ports go out the case (backside) i don't know the exact word for that. Then let the front fan suck in air on the CPU, the CPU Fan blows backwards and the back fan blows out and the PSU Fan blows also out. Then you have a direct air flow front -> CPU -> Back. This brings down your case temp. And get one or two of this slot coolers if possible. Side Fan i would let blow in but you could also test to let it blow out and see what better works.

Those are neat, haven't seen those before.

input/output panel, there already IS a case fan there, but its pretty pointless right there because the PSU is exhausting directly above it.

FOQ , the heatstink's fin's was actually quite clean, but the underside of the plastic shield/cover was a EPIC amount of dust bunnies, that had the consistency of sponge cake. lol

Looking at that case, you need more vents and not 80 mm, in my case i have 4 120 mm (and I can still add 2 more) fans controlled by a Lian Li 5.25 inch fan control thermometer.

I ripped out the 80mm fan in picture 2 (in the pic its missing, its same tower, just not mine), it was a peice of shit anyway, and so caked full of dust its basically become trash, which is where it ended up,the trash can.

So you moved your exhaust fan to make it an intake for the video cards? Looks like it wasn't a bad move, but I would get that exhaust fan replaced. Without it, heat will build up in your case and slowly roast your hardware over time.

I didnt move it, it's still exhausting. I took out the front intake 80mm fan completely,as it was begging me to end its life ,the bearings or something inside it are shot and insanely dusty.

I was going to just blow them out, but when I looked at it upside down I could see that the inside of the plastic covers on the video cards was mega caked with dust, so I had been looking at the heat sinks fin's thinking it was okay the whole time, but it required a different viewing angle to see the shit-fest of caked dust bunny's under the plastic cover

It had the consistency of pound cake haha, and when I squished it, it held its shape haha, ew.

So,I took both gpu's apart entirely, and the only way to take off the plastic covering on them was to also take off the entire hsf assembly, which also required I replace the thermal compound. I used AS5 after cleaning them really good.

my original idle temps are now my full load temps

Which has nothing to do with AS5. AS5 is just a good way to make money. Dust kills your components if you're not cleaning out your case often. Did you smoke by the computer?
