  • Chasm: The Rift

    Hello,

I am not sure if everybody knows about this game.
It was released around 1 year after Quake and therefore had to live in the shadow of it.
Some people call it a modest brother of Quake, but it really has its pros and many fresh ideas.

In the end you must try it yourself to see if you like it or not.
I saw that it has never been really mentioned here in this forum, so I thought about starting this thread.

In my opinion it is a playable game with pros and cons:

    Pros:
    - destroyable environment/walls
    - different episodes with totally different times/ambience (just like Quake)
    - cool weapon ideas (incl. mines)
    - monster body parts can be shoot of (incl. headshot)
    - Best monster ever: zombie with ranged "scream attack" (I Love it)
    - amazing/beautiful particle effects
    - real 3D models/environment (just like Quake)
    - many episodes are fantasy-style
    - nice rain/snow effects

    Cons:
    - narrow map layout (sometimes like a labyrinth)
    - no advanced engine available
    - must be played in DosBox (it works flawlessly)

Many things will remind you on Quake while playing
(I am not sure it that is good or bad)

Here are some media to give you the feeling:

Lol, this game was pretty popular in Russia and Ukraine, cause it was made by those people who have released STALKER many years after

i played this game loooong time ago. i was fun back then. sprite entities /fences e.g./ together with the full 3d enemies models make it look like some sort hybrid between duke3d and quake. i still remember this game because of the monsters - you can shoot off one hand, but he /or she.. i don't know due to insuficient level of body detail/ still fights back. so you shoot off the second hand, but he /or she/ still try to kick you.
        -
there was an opengl or glide patch but i never managed to make it work. i tried it like four years ago, but i wouldn't work. dos box is ok, however the level design is very 2D. like in doom you can go up and down, but if i'm not wrong the game engine doesn't support room over room feature /like duke3D/ so it's basically flat.
        -
that video brings so many memories....

I remember having a copy of this back in the day but could never get it to work properly - the sound card I was using back then was a piece of rubbish basically, and as a DOS game it used to complain mightily. Must see if I can find it again and give it a try.

found out you can download it for free from abandonia since it apparently is abandonware:

The company still exists. They later made Cryostasis, which seems to be a pretty cool game. Just watching a playthrough video of that.

I agree it reminds me of quake/hexen too.

Also reminds me of Rune: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BKVMlMPUcs]Rune Multiplayer Gameplay - YouTube[/ame]

Don't think it was a very popular game either, however i recall multiplayer was kinda fun b/c most weapons was throwing weapons hah. Had a weird quake/look feel to it but was more newage attempt at false 3dish realm.

Quake needs it so that if you are out of rockets, you can throw the rocket launcher at your enemy.

I'd rather it just let you pocket ur rocket and toss ur axe *but magically your axe never disappears*

                    hehe

If that was the case that'd be sweet.

Again; the company still exists and a short google search reveals that the devs are still working in game design; one of them is CEO of Tatem Games.

You should remove the warez link if you hope to ever get the source released.

Definitely remove the link - so-called "abandonware" has no legal status and could get this site into trouble.

That reminds me to that one special day, when I first played Quake:
I was so scared, when the demon jumped out of the shadows towards me,
that I threw my mouse away and screamed out loud.
That day I knew: I will play this game for a loong time.

Regarding the wonderful "zombie" monster in Chasm:
Now, that I played around with QC a lot, i want to make the zombies in Quake do the same attack: That "scream-attack" is simply amazing.
Especially with that perfect model animation.
Unfortunately Quake levels are much wider and you would not be able to reach a corner to hide in time. In Chasm, the maps/ways are so tight, that you can do this better.
It is a simple traceline attack-code, just like the shambler uses, but without the lightning.
It is the "invisible" scream-attack that I like so much.

I had to remove the link. I don't want Solecord to get in trouble somehow. I don't know maybe it is abandonware, but especially in the new SOPA/PIPA/ACTA/Shutting down Megaupload climate, better to be safe than sorry and this site has always had a no warez policy.

Really it'd be funny if you could throw the axe.

You are playing a game, someone is owning you. You run out of ammo. Out of desperation you throw the axe, but miss. Then with no weapon and no alternatives, you make a run for it.

Would be funny to see that in-game.

Back on topic, some of the screenshots look of this game look interesting. I had never heard of this game before this thread.
