Those weapon models look really nice though, any way to... erh... borrow them? Exe file seems to be self contained, unfortunately.

Ha! I played this the other day via DOSbox while I was revisiting some old raycasting-era shooters.

It's a very blatant Quake-ripoff and the influence is obvious, especially in the texturing, color choices and overall design. But it's very well executed.

Interesting is that the engine, being software-based, could do a few things Quake couldn't like transparent glass. Still, the engine is more of the raycasting-type as in Doom or Build-engine based games, it's not really 3D.

I think Chasm: The Rift is one of the most moronic titles for a game ever (Quake: The Tremor, Doom: The Disaster, Hexen: The Witches), but maybe that's just me.

Anyway it's an interesting game and worth a look.

Oh man do I have memories of this. Downloading the 2 meg beta on a 14.4 modem in 1997. It was like a slightly 'wackier' quake. Not quite as grim or foreboding, but I loved that it rewarded you with decapitations if you landed headshots and took off limbs.

In ways it was ahead of Quake1's tech while still being a 2.5d engine like doom1/duke3d. The software renderer did some really cool real-time distortion effects with smoke too i've never seen anywhere else.

I'd really love to see the engine go opensource so it could be ported to modern OS'es. It was to Quake what ROTT was to Doom.
