If you read things John Carmack writes both past and present, like his Twitter page, etc. and look at the past work, he's very much into technology and not so much into plot development.

It is hard to believe John Carmack could be "in it for the money" when he open sources everything after a while, which in many ways is "giving away your work".

Greedy companies would never do such a thing and would be "mine, mine, mine."

/Just my thoughts, not so much on the game but the company.

I was all over these when they leaked a few days ago. I noticed a lot of people are doubting if these are from Doom 4 or some other project. Unless some other game is using tech5 at the moment then these are from Doom 4.

It's way to early in development to form any real opinions, but these are my thoughts:

Earth was an obvious choice, and a good one. Though, we knew the setting was earth years ago. One thing I do find troublesome is the multiple characters. Doom 3 had several characters (I absolutely love doom 3 btw, one of the best games ever conceived...shameless plug of some of my mods: bam and boom) but in doom 3 they had little time in the game. It's way to early to tell, but I hope they don't get all heavy into story and character development. My personal Doom4 would be fast paced, gory and scary with minimal down time and character development (if any at all). Kinda like a dark and doomified Serious Sam.

I bought Rage the second it hit steam and for me it was 'meh'. It wasn't a bad game by any means, though some things were really silly (HDR much?). It didn't have the atmosphere I've found in previous id games. Story was minimal, that's fine, but the gameplay was just so slow and it wasn't very engaging for very long. It really didn't tickle my fancy at all. I just hope Doom 4 doesn't follow that same feel.

      still cannot wait though!

I actually really look forward to having multiple characters, for example I would definitely like to play as a female space marine (it makes no sense the space marines are all male, did you ever watch Starship Troopers? Women can be badass space marines) and it would be cool if you could advance your character somehow.

That said I also want it to be a fast, no nonsense killfest with some horror elements. I hope the weirder monsters from Doom 3 (the babies, anyone?) make a return.

IMHO you can have both, characters don't mean you have to run slowly or you can only carry 2 weapons.

You can do multiple characters well, or you can do them badly, like everything else. It is not systematically bad.

I want FemDoomguy in Doom 4. And OldDoomguy. And GayDoomguy!

Having multiple characters is not systematically bad. But, I feel it would be easy to stumble and cause a game so gameplay and mechanic-centric as doom to feel bloated or weighed down with story and character development. I agree you can have both working harmoniously with each other, I just feel it's prone to problems.

But we'll see, id know what they are doing. If you're a developer and Rage is your worst game then you're pretty rock solid.

I think ID should try and bring back John Romero for this and Quake 5 at least. Before he got so egocentric he really added a lot of soul to ID's games (and a pixelated head )

            EDIT: Apparently these are real

Romero back would be awesome. I don't think a full return would happen, but it would really be nice if he was given some opportunity for involvement. As I understand it, any bad blood that may have existed has been worked over and resolved a long time ago; it would be cool.

This is the bit you're not getting. It's not you. It's got nothing whatsoever to do with you on any kind of personal level. There is a difference between you on a personal level and the attitude of hate and negativity that you project. I am not arguing with you on any kind of personal level; I have no personal difficulty with you whatsoever; I've never met you and likely never will; you on any kind of personal level occupy an extremely low slot in the "things that are important in my life" continuum.

I just think that the points you're trying to make are bollocks.

I have produced evidence of why this is so, and my motivation is nothing whatsoever to do with you. I am not arguing with you; I don't care about you on that kind of level; I am arguing against the hate and negativity you are spreading. This is coming from a perspective of trying to get a reasoned and balanced discussion about this thing, without any of the mindless hate fest that accompanied Rage's release. I'm not attacking you, I'm attacking the points that you are making. There is a difference.

I'm definitely looking forward to D4. ID may not be as big as they once were, but they still make games with solid mechanics that are fun to play, and even though I wasn't particularly fond of RAGE, I did enjoy the combat much more then a lot of other shooters.

This is off topic but, anyone notice that hit reactions are starting become more prominent in games and are being seen as quite important to gunplay? I just find it weird because it seems like Quake games were one of the first games to have hit reactions that made you feel like you were shooting people, but then they disappeared from a lot of games until recently.

woah, these pics are really from doom4 in development?

wouldve bet a hundred bucks that they werent cuz they didnt really look anything doom-ish imo at first look.

interesting pics though. kinda a fallout/rage feeling to them with a bit of borderlands/brink look for the humans. interesting...

when browsing through the pics i did recognise some typical ID/doom stuff like some of the windows or the usage of sewers which ID seems to be a big fan of, of having maps set in sewers.

and i agree, earth does make a logical setting for doom4, since in doom it was mars, doom2 earth, doom3 mars again, so it would make perfect sense that doom4 is on earth again with the hell-spawn invading the earth.

dunno what to think of all the pics that got leaked. some are cool stuff, some not so cool imo. some stuff feels like doom, some pics dont feel anything like doom at all imo sadly

but as Matt Hooper said, its all still early development and doesnt represent anything like what doom3 will be like at all

so its way to early to really make an opinion yet about doom4, when it isnt even close to nearly done any time soon, and thus i wont make an opinion myself yet

the images look cool, and i hope for doom4 they'll not go to much in on story and characters and such, and itll be more fastpaced again with hordes of monsters coming at you at once a la doom1&2.

loved doom3 too, and ive replayed them over several times cuz imo they perfectly pulled off the darker horror 'creeping through hallways and suddenly a monster jumps out' style imo. and i think its an awesome game as well.
but i didnt keep wanting to go back and play it over and over again nearly as much as doom1&2 cuz i love that fast-style chaotic fighting tons of monsters at same time way more.

which is why i also love serious sam myself as well, for the fastpaced non-stop shooting.
and i agree with killpixel that it would be awesome if doom4 would be more chaotic and tons of monsters coming at ya at once like in serious sam
                    .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?

I don't know if carmack would want to do that. Even though he likes the technological aspects more, I'm pretty sure he still wants his own company to make games with his engines

Wonder if doom 4 will have widescreen aspect incorporated in it rather then having to tweak its resolution like doom 3/return to wolfenstein with this bs:

Add +seta com_allowconsole 1 to the Set Launch Options box in the Properties menu in the Steam Library.

Run Doom 3 again and press ~ to bring down the console.

                        Type seta r_customWidth 1680, enter, seta r_customHeight 1050, enter,

                        seta r_mode -1, enter.

Then type vid_restart. (not always available sometimes u have to exit and reload game / like for wolf u have to exit an restore it), works in doom3 for the vid_restart tho.

Mad that most id's games are built for 4:3 crts. (is i).

this looks more like a RAGE DLC than DoomIV

GCD is tomorrow let's see if this is true or not

                            :\

instead of typing that into console every time you could just make and autoexec.cfg and put this in it:

                            r_mode "-1"
                            r_aspectratio "1" <----change for your aspect ratio.
                            r_customwidth "1920"
                            r_customheight "1080"
                            g_fov "90"
                            vid_restart
                            com_fixedtic "1" <----this stops the micro-stutter found in tech4.

Widescreen aspects are supported by Rage so it seems reasonable to suppose that they'll also be OK in Doom 4.

of course widescreen will be supported. nowadays every game does.
you're talking about games from 10years ago

back when doom3 was made widescreen wasnt a thing yet and if you said anything about a widescreen monitor to someone they most likely wouldve given you a weird look and then burst out in laughter.

but nowadays widescreen is the mainstream aspect ratio, everybody uses it, nobody will be so dumb to make a game anymore which doesnt even support widescreen nowadays since its a must cuz everybody uses widescreen aspect ratio nowadays
                                .
