r3dy for expas10n set/ baker r3l3ase award winning engine to attract playors from all teh internets. log on quakeone one day, all servers 16/16. 0h/
but really, what are you doing that's so special? 0h, release in april 2011/ then n0thing/ 0h, release in (insert date here) and still nothing. Brag on about how great this is supposed to be, talking big, whilst there's no evidence of what you're doing. keep making those release dates. i know i'm coming off as harsh, but it honestly irritates the hell out of me.
i don't see why you'd want to really make an engine, Darkplaces already has everything you need to "modernize" Quake, and attract new players, if that's what you're trying to do. Even if somebody did turn Quake into a flashy modern game with nice menus and user-friendliness, nobody would play it. CSQC is the key to doing all these things.
I agree with many of the points in this thread made by woodpecker:

Most of the people that still play Quake now are purists, they don't want anything to change.
Essentially, you'd have to make Quake... not really Quake, to even hope to get new people that play regularly. Quake DM inherently sucks, everything is unbalanced. ID didn't design Quake for multiplayer, they just slapped it together from lack of time, which is why all the weapons/pickups/etc are the exact same as in singleplayer. The biggest thing here being the Rocket Launcher. but the RL defines Quake doesn't it? unfortunately i think that'd have to be changed. Just like in Q3 they got rid of the nailguns (replaced with machinegun), because they didn't really work.
i see evidence of this all the time on NewDM which is now dp7 protocol, players come and go all the time. Its obvious that they come from modern gaming backgrounds (Call of duty in particular), they don't know how to use the console (the usage of this needs to be eliminated entirely, it'll only scare people away), they don't know how to strafe, don't even know how to switch weapons, etc. Of course they quit soon after dying a few times, even with how NewDM improves on vanilla quake DM so much (at least I think so). Many people apparently don't install Darkplaces with all the DLL files (in particular the ones for curl-http sending), so the CSQC menus, models, sounds, etc don't get downloaded. So they're just stuck with missing items everywhere. People with Macs/Linux also have different issues.
i definitely try to help these new players out, most of the time it's futile. they go back to CoD or whatever, which sometimes I don't blame them for. CoD is addicting even at times with all the ranking/prestiges/unlocks and that kind of stuff (all this kind of stuff can be done with DP+CSQC). That and CoD is an easier game, its easier to get kills, all the weapons are extremely deadly. which is why shmack/runequake is so popular, any noob can come in and get a kill. spamming gas grenades all day at start/dm4/e1m7, etc is just too fun and easy.
anyway, i could go on for awhile about this, figured i'd throw in my thoughts on how I really don't see Quake going anywhere fast.Last edited by bta.monster; 03-12-2012, 11:01 PM.

I've had a few decision points along the way. I carefully weighed the pros and cons of each option at each point and made what can be a reasonably unpopular decision to not release or even post screenshots 3 times.
The question I asked myself: will releasing what I have now be a game changer or should I continue my current course and do some more things I previously thought were unattainable.
I made my decisions very well knowing they would be unpopular to some people and did so for the greater good, knowing exactly that some people would specifically not be happy with me.
There are ups and downs to unpopular decisions. At each point, I knew. But I'm only interested in the end result. So what if I have to eat a "shit sandwich" or two along the way? Small price to pay.
I'm not ducking the issue. In fact, I'm more than willing to eat those "shit sandwiches".
Here I am, guys. Criticize me. I'm not even arguing your criticism is invalid, I'm specifically saying it is valid.

I'm with Rampage. I don't know Baker at all, but he doesn't come across as someone that talks shit just to sound important. I'd be more inclined to be excited and supportive as opposed to skeptical.
Go Baker! LOL! Any man that is openly coding a geometry engine must be up to something. Whatever he is building, I'm hoping it's something that I could use for development purposes.
I love tools,

Perhaps as my engine coding skills have increased I think "This game is 16 years old, there is nothing make or break about a specific day or month."

I am absolutely uninterested in making an engine that appeals to PEOPLE WHO ALREADY PLAY THE GAME.
Now read that again.
If I were a Transformer and my fucking stupid idea was to "grow" a community by appealing to PEOPLE WHO ALREADY PLAY THE GAME I should be called Retardimus Prime.
And I'd be a fucking moron. Seriously.
Do you want to hear the "haha funny"?
It goes like this: If what I am working on is meant to appeal to people who do not play the game, why would I be concerned about what people WHO ALREADY PLAY THE GAME think about my project?
[Sure, there are some F bombs in there and I don't usually do that but sometimes proper expression requires them ....]Last edited by Baker; 03-13-2012, 12:19 PM.Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. The Half-Life 1 community is still very much alive and kicking, though somewhat "underground" compared to HL2. Heck, a project I've been working on for several years (Cry of Fear mod for Half-Life - Mod DB) has been released recently and has accumulated over 100.000 downloads in about 3 weeks, just to demonstrate how many people are still interested in HL. Be warned though, HL communities are often pretty small with a very distinct culture and as such they can be pretty intimidating for newcomers.

I didn't score any points. I was kinda going for the 0-0 tie.Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

Morrowind modding is fairly active, but it is closed source and its engine sucks, so it is fairly difficult. Fortunately some developers are on the rescue.
Also The Dark Mod community is fairly active. Since Doom3 has been opened the mod is becoming more and more independent, soon it will be a game by itself.Contradiction is truth. Fear is freedom. Rights are privileges. Job is a commodity. Ignorance is strength.
