  • Black Mesa 2012 media - prepping for release

Now, I know there are many people here with mixed (or distasteful) feelings towards Half-Life, but I figure I'd post this here anyway as it's one of my favorites (obviously not above quake, but very close in my opinion)

Anybody who follows black mesa in any way, shape or form, knows they haven't had any new or significant media in a while, and would also know from the devs that upon preparation for release, when the mod was close enough to being finished that they could confidently give a release date and have no trouble making it, they would forgo the blackout and start releasing different types of media over the course of a couple of weeks to prepare for the mod's release.

    They just started it:

Thank you all so much, it's really great to have your support! With your help we have now kicked off our social-media campaign towards our first release! You can expect more updates from us in the near future. Today we are sharing this fantastic batch of screenshots that really gives you the first glimpse into the gameplay of Black Mesa. This is just the beginning. We have more in store for you in the near future! Hold on to your lab coats!

Here is comparisons between HL1 and BM

For those who don't know, BM is a mod for HL2 (it's free, all you need to do is install source SDK base which is also free) that re-imagines the original Half-Life game for if it were made with current tech.

nice, and props to them if they really can finish it.

the one thing I worry about with things like this is, will it have the quality in level design, gameplay etc, will it be interesting enough, or will it be "moddish"?

Moddish as in, when you can easily see that this is a fanboy / hobbyist project.

I hope they go the extra mile with this to make it stand on its own and don't just make this a Source version of the half-life layout and monsters. If they did that, they'd regret it for the rest of their lives. I hope it will have balls and be its own thing.

      I hope they make it.

They are taking heavy liberties. The goal is to turn Half-Life into something that might have been made now. Sure, gameplay is similar, but they completely change puzzles and room layouts to make actual sense in the context of the setting and story, and stuff like that.

It's not a 1:1 remake, and while it might piss off a lot of people I for one am happy about that. I used to not be happy about it, until I replayed Half-Life and realized how much of it didn't make any sense at all. Like this one room in particular where to turn on a fan you have to climb all the way down to underneath the fan, and the ladder is right in the fan's path - that logically makes no sense whatsoever.

So yeah, basically, it'll be similar enough that you will recognize stuff, but different enough and new enough that it won't feel the same.

Kinda like a less extreme version of remake quake

I hope this mod employs a locked FOV of 40, uses exclusively check-point based saves, requires a constant internet connection and lacks keyboard and mouse support (to be patched in at a later date of course).

They also need to replace every scripted sequence with a cutscene forcing you to watch whatever is going on.

Seriously though, I'm pretty sure it will have an FOV slider between 75 and 90, since it runs on the 2007 OB engine.

Here's a screenshot of one of the prototyping HUDs they made before the current, unrevealed HUD, as well as the "new" mp5 model

                Also young ELI

And another shot of this MP5 on surface tension:

It's a hard balance to hit with Remakes between "faithful enough" and "stands on its own as a great game".

                  I look forward to it.

Old, but I think it's cool they are putting this in

This is an old version of the system, so it probably looks a lot better now

Cmon this game will never be released, its just a silly joke and a bad one. Already in 2008 they did plan to release it and every 2 years they just leack some pics, make some statements on they forum and after a while when everything calms down the game is still not here. Its like Half Life 2 EP.3.... After 4 years of developing they just put it down...

They missed one release date, that hardly qualifies as never coming out

It's a free mod that doesn't require you to own any game, that they are developing in their free time. They could've just as easily chose to never show anyone anything until it was released. And they talk to the forums every day...

I 2nd everything Bloodshot said. Few things tick me off more than ppl whining about free stuff that someone put hours and/or years of their time into.
