They've already spent way more then 100$ on the mod while they worked on it.

I bet there is some kind of licensing VooDoo that could be done to allow the game to be free to everyone except companies like Steam.

For instance anyone can download and play the game for free, but for companies like steam they would have to pay a distribution fee just to have the game on their network and still give the game away for free. Why would steam do this? Well, imagine if more people came out with no-steam games for free that are of the quality of Black Mesa...why use steam at all? By buying the rights to freely distribute Black mesa on their network, Steam still has the potential to sell other games to the Black Mesa players.

Black Mesa could revolutionize the gaming industry. Don't sell to the players, sell to the networks that want to host their game. The networks in turn attempt to sell you something else.

I'm just making all of this up as fast as I can type, but I bet there is a solid idea in there somewhere.

This new requirement was made after Black Mesa was already on greenlight.

No it wasn't, they payed the $100.

Also, black mesa along with other mods got accepted on Steam.

Unfortunately, they have to set it up with valve first so it won't go up on steam by friday, but the devs said the regular download mirrors/torrents will still be available. If you want the steam-integration version, you'll just have to copy your saves over later (though I'm guessing you probably would loose your achievements since steam-integrated achievements are different from BM's implementation)

It's out and it's also awesome! Been playing it already. It looks fantastic, but they did change a few things here and there... but it's quite fun none-the-less!

                    Holy Moses Bloodshot !

                    These screens scream: "play me".

Too bad that I have to use steam to play it. Someone said that it needs Half life 2 installation. And that is, as far as I know, only possible via Steam.
Or is there another way to play this (without steam) ?

black mesa doesn't need half-life2. all you need is steam and sdk 2007 - it's all for free. no source game necessary this time.

it's good, really good, i'm almost in the end and balc mesa beats most of today's commerial games. difficulity it quite high though... especially on hard.

I read in this thread, that there are 2 versions.
Steam-version comes later ... or something like this ?

So is it not possible to play this without Steam ?

as far as i know steam is manadatory. however, there are so-called repaks all over the internet. maybe with these repaks you dont need steam. i don't know. i have orange box and i have account on steam.
