I also hear Quake 2 Max is good, [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxH8yrKRdkg]Quake 2 MaX - YouTube[/ame]
The real reality of the situation is the Q2 community seems to be sporadic and here and there, much like Q1 used to be pre Quakeone.comWant to get into playing Quake again? Click here for the Multiplayer-Startup kit! laissez bon temps rouler!

If anything it's Quake that's weird with it's sudden lurches between different (often wildly different - just look at e1) styles. Quake II's variety is there, but it builds more slowly and between units, with between map variety being more subtle, and a lot of it occurring much more in the architecture style than the texturing.
Besides, doesn't everyone is the MP community always just play DM3 anyway? And what of the first few maps in SOA? Repetitive should not be a complaint.IT LIVES! http://directq.blogspot.com/

Quake 1broke through the 3d gaming ceiling. Quake 2 started a downward spiral for the name Quake 1.
Quake 2 felt very cartoon'ish and I thought even though Q1 had full 3d everything that the monsters looked a bit silly. Q2's monsters look like they should be posing next to the DJ at a rave.
I never got into the whole "OMG STROGG!" BS and didn't give a shit that strogg were invading. I was just pissed that I finished Quake 1 and didn't even get the chance to face off against "Quake" which left me wanting to venture further and destroy this evil "Quake" entity" wherever it may be.
ID really lost me as a customer once Q2 came out, almost redeemed themselves with D3 then shot themselves in the foot again in my eyes with Rage. They're lucky they made Quake 1 or else I probably would not even be a Q1 vet here to tell the story about how I wasted $5000+ and 16 years of my life on this game.
Q3A felt more like Q1 with Q2 shoved up it's ass working as the puppeteer
and the ONLY game that has ever exceeded Quake 1 in lasting fun factor for me is black Ops even though 80% of the time I get a horrible connection and usually lag out of the game.
Just sayin I don't think Q1 and Q2 should even share the same name and the only thing they do have in common is they were both made by ID and they're both first person shooters.

Quake 2 has slightly more interesting brushwork than Quake 1, much more angular and massive, while the dominant colour scheme is still mainly brown (with a few exceptions, such as the bright orange and blue).
There aren't many brick walls in Quake 2, they often opted for plainer textures and let the brushwork do the job instead. Coloured lighting also makes a huge difference, this can easily make a grey wall look a garish green, so again the textures can be more plain.
Quake 1 also has some striking architecture though, such as the submerged buildings in e1m4.
Anyway. Q2 always struck me as slightly more Doomish, with the BFG, stimpacks, techy details, and exploding barrels. But you can also see similarities to Quake 3 (the colours, the goth-tech theme of the later levels).
Sure, it has no fiends and shamblers. That's regrettable.

For future reference, Google is your friend. I've spent less than 1minute total in actual looking. I just find link / post. I am not actually testing these things.Want to get into playing Quake again? Click here for the Multiplayer-Startup kit! laissez bon temps rouler!

Q2 does however have it's horrible light scaling which completely wrecks the look of it's textures, making everything appear washed-out and over-saturated. It also quite agressively picmips down which messes things up even further. Both are artefacts of the target hardware of it's time, and are easily fixed in a modern source port, which hugely improves the look.
It is important to remember that both of these were technical solutions to problems rather than aesthetic choices, so they shouldn't be viewed as part of the way Q2 is meant to look. Better solutions just weren't available in the Voodoo/Voodoo 2 days; even just a year or two later things would have been done differently.
The look of Q2's models is entirely down to Paul Steed. Chunky 'n' cartoonish is his style, and whether you like it or not is personal taste, not objectively better or worse.IT LIVES! http://directq.blogspot.com/

IMO, Q1 and Q2 are both pretty different games...
I played (and loved) Q2 before I ever even considered playing Q1.
Stylistically (visuals, audio & gameplay), I prefer Q1 over Q2. But, I believe Q2 superior on a technical level. In comparison, Q2 lacks that ethereal character, but it definitely feels more cohesive, matured and polished.
With that being said, Modern Warfare 3 is WAY better than any of the quake games. Like, way.
