Quake vs Call of Duty Black Ops + COD Clones

Do you want to see another Quake?

Do you want it to play like Quake from the 90s?

If you answered yes to both, please read a book in games design.

Call of Duty is not your thing, obviously. Don't be a dick and come onto a quake forum and post on the wrong area about how terrible a game that doesn't matter to this forum is. I don't think I'm alone on this matter. I do remember making a note of how I'm sorry for my generation being how you're behaving when it comes to attacking non Call of Duty.

But I'm sorry for my generation being so full of itself that we feel that because we enjoy an older game we must defend something we really didn't experience because that might make us look cool with the big boys who were doing this YEARS before us.

Quake is a niche game. Get over it, and get over yourself.

Sorry for sounding like I think I have authority, but this is getting real irritating. But Bryan, look up the game Beyond from 2GD's studio. If you don't know 2GD, that's a bit of important Quake e-sports history for you to look into as well.

Egad, on the subject of Quake being noob friendly, it really isn't. I suck at quake online and to me, getting a frag is the coolest thing in the world. I don't care though, it's a shame that more people aren't coming to Quake. But it's quake 1, I'm just happy people are trying to keep Quake live going.

But, I'm bringing up an issue here which is an issue with myself and not the game. I'm just going "it's old, it's not important anymore, I'm glad I can still play Qlive (and about 2.5K quake 3 servers as I found the other day).

I would like to see more quake, but I just don't enjoy it like I used to. It's old, which isn't a reason to stop playing, but I enjoy Q3 far more for multiplayer. Being that I work all day anyway, and do have a social life. Plus many games I want to play, I don't have time to play more than a couple of games of quake these days.

TL;DR - Stop looking for approval from older players because you're against something that your favourite product competes with. It's childish.

I've spent 10+ minutes on a Quake 1 server recently to try and get a game of CA going... I've actually had to do this multiple times waiting 10+ minutes sometimes just leaving Quake open and online on a server waiting... I don't really have time to sit and wait for a game to start, so to me Quake is the slower paced game since I'm wasting time not even being entertained waiting for an opponent to show.


Yeah that's some fast paced gaming there.

Aapparently A LOT of people care about COD:Black Ops and there's A LOT more Black Ops players then Quake 1. Trolls are easier to avoid, ping times are much better at times etc etc etc...

This is kind of like comparing my Atari to my Playstation... Just not really to fare considering the time/theme/current/future playerbase.

Quake was the first online game I played and it has a special place in my nostalgia filled heart.

The only reason for me to play Quake these days is nostalgia and boredom.


I've been around the Q1 scene since it was first released(1996) I've watched the game's ups and downs, seen whole bunch of stuff come out for the game, made my own mods,maps, hell I even was a bot user at one point for an entertaining purposes moment in my Quake 1 career.

Quake 1's only hope is a TRUE resurrection(sequel) in my eyes.


Will COD:Black Ops matter 16+ years from now? Maybe, maybe not but what is important to me is my time and how I can optimize it better and sitting in a virtual world waiting for virtual people to show up is a complete time waster and really turns me away from even wanting to play more NetQuake. I just don't have time to spend to run the risk of getting possibly crap game after crap game... it just doesn't appeal.

I actually think I've find more entertainment from NetQuake Co-op then a competitive server at this point as I don't play Q1 competitively at all anymore...or even play the game anymore for that matter.

There's a more interesting point about Quake I've found fascinating and that's the coding/programing/modding side and this is probably where I'll start my next Quake1 journey once I feel comfortable enough to spend time figuring out the QC puzzle I've been working on.


I wouldn't diss COD simply because you can't rocketjump/bunnyhop at lightning speeds that's silly, Quake 1 is one of the only games to have such dynamics that I know of, COD focuses on completely different mechanics/style/options. It's just a bad comparison, no apologize here.

Why Quake 3 because my only favorite was Quake 1 and my Pre-Favorite was Quake 2 but not Quake 3 because its full of aimming you have to take time which is totaly hard and dont move you moues jerky or less accuracy something like that or you might end up newbie because i have been fragged alot and of course a friend of mine said "Quake 3 doesent have single player" he is right because that single player that has is just a Tournament no story that much

There's just not enough newbs. When someone from the past jumps on a server, players play 120% and they just want a weekend game to get back into it.
But they get frustrated and never return. Ambiguity makes new games fun. GFX are only for the 1st hour, but if they cannot feed the ego there's no reason to play.

Best way to get more players is to redo the game. I dont mean change gameplay or physics, but maybe sidestep with totally new maps or gfx. Take Xonotic for example.

Hell QuakeLive is q3 redone but somehow has more players now...

if its new to all then maybe there's a chance more will play. or else its just leets stomping newbs for 1 day.

Its kinda either Quake 1 gets recreated like QL or might move on if Quake 5 was released so we gotta stick with quake 1 (less players) until either its remade officaly (No changed gameplay tho) or Quake 5 gets released or has a BETA but that may take a while since they are working on DOOM 4 something like that

I told you why there are not more new players. The game does not provide an opening for them. By its nature, it rewards veterans instead of noobs.

I actually share a lot of those concerns, but I still consider it the best no nonsense shooter out there. Here's a recent article I find myself fully agreeing with: vector poem Coelacanth: Lessons from Doom
Personally I consider Quake a much better Doom because of the 3D gameplay. Q2 gameplay isn't nearly as inventive to me (though it's better in certain areas) and I'm a bit sad Id never iterated on the Q1 design more.

Quake's gameplay is extremely limited; all you can do is move, pick up items, and shoot. That's very bare bones.

You mean it's like Half Life, Unreal, Call Of Duty, Crysis... ?
I actually consider that it's biggest strength, in Quake the pieces are all very simple but you can combine them in countless ways. Contrast that to the on rails gameplay of a Cod where every enemy is a basic variation on soldier with a rifle. Yeah you can add crafting and inventories, but then it becomes more and more of an RPG. I certainly like those hybrids myself and I think it's the way for the genre to move forward, but there's games like Serious Sam or Painkiller that still prove dumb shooters can be great fun.

Quake has no reward mechanics to speak of.

You mean extrinsic rewards? Sure. I never considered those rewards, more of hanging a carrot in front of the rabbit. When I kill a room of Shamblers and Vores I feel quite rewarded.

Maybe, its time for me to go into a better (going to be popular again) Duke Nukem 3D and its Megaton Edition because its being redoing for steam so i just gonna perfer Duke than just Unpopular Quake then Duke beats COD in my opinion

so no more Strafe Jumping and all that anymore because in duke3d its like Doom but not quake though its like 2.5D or sprite based but still in comparision to Duke and Quake

I basically have no opinion in this; I don't see it matters which is better because I generally like shooters (both first and third person perspective).

Of course Quake is more fun because it's faster. However the reason why COD and other military games like it is slower is becase: (1)The gameplay is based on millitary tactitcs (big surprise there :/) and (2) it is somewhat accurate to real-life military. In the millitary you can't just run and gun, you have to take it slow because it gives you more focus in order to stay alive.

Also, it is true that nobody likes a camper. However if you are a sniper, then you would do some camping because that is what sniper in real life do. The sniper rifle is used for taking out hostiles from a safe distance, but it is also better to move to a different spot so you won't give away your position. It's annoying in gaming, but accurate.

When comes to the trolling, rages, and underage gamers; COD does in fact takes the cake. Certain game modes in COD can make other players frusterated. Also troll not only trolls other players, they record their reactions and post them on youtube. Underage gamers are the usual victims because they get mad easily and it's more funnier to the trolls and also target their parents too. Just because they are online does not mean they should troll around, but they do it anyway and there is hardly anyone out there to stop it. That is why I never use my mic to talk to other players. When you think about it, underage gamers probably make themselves victims by giving themselves away by using mics.

Oh and at duke3d it gets me alittle bit fustrated because of the network code on the source ports and IPX Dosbox is not much same acting as the Real IPX, even at Duke3D multiplayer it was kinda faulty and goes out of sync and all that so its best to wait on Megaton Beta Multiplayer so yeah thats my opinion but atleast i dont overreact and im a underage gamer too though im 12

I'm dead serious, I'd love to know why you wouldn't play both? Please don't take this as a harsh thing, I'm actually quite curious. Because I don't see why you don't set some time aside for each.

Oh, and megaton edition is pretty fun, though from what I've used of it, I'm sticking to eduke32. (source : I have it)

Though on a semi related note about rewarding the players. I went onto nQuake today, hopped into a couple of FFA servers and well. I got my ass handed to me, but oh god. When I got a frag or two it was great, I was seriously loving the time I got to play. I'll try and join some games that are arranged here, because I forgot how much I loved quake DM.

Well, idk. I suppose all I can say is to have fun, really. It's only a game. I just hope you have fun with what games you choose to play.
