the germans banned their national anthem, at least part of it (the marsellaise is far more militaristic, if you ask me...) because it was sung during the 3rd Reich (as well as in 3 other German states in the last 100 years, if I'm counting right.) ;-)

We also have a couple banned national flags and symbols of various sorts (among them Celtic and Germanic ones), parties (both left- and right-wing), and a host of other verboten stuff, for example violent computer games. (this is where Doom and Wolfenstein enter the picture.)

But you can smoke in public (well, they're trying to ban that too), drink in public, go out all night long, prostitution is legal, and the state can force you into the army (or other public service). And every day there are "Krimis" on TV where people are shot, poisoned, raped, butchered etc. My granny is a big fan of those. They aren't banned because there is no blood (well there is blood, but you mostly don't see details, just bodies.) (= gibfilter but no deadbodyfilter)

so the thing about walking contradictions is true.

Perhaps they would allow Quake if it would not show how things are shot, only the results of being shot. I don't know.

Much of the banning is ridiculous (for example music CDs with sex-related lyrics.)

However, I gather that the Americans also like to ban stuff, just different stuff. Headlines from American newspapers concerning the dangers for clean American boys (visiting the world cup) have been subject of amusement here, especially the concerns about alcohol and "sin" (probably prostiution? Dangerous German fr�uleins? poor American boys.)

i love how the opening paragraph of every travel book is inevitably some vague statement about the "contradictions" of a country. So they have a mosque next to a movie theater--GET OVER IT. hehee. but a contradiction is only such from far away, so instead in the opening paragraph they should just say "you know nothing about this place", then move into actual information.

I noticed that the map links worked so I looked into the other links. It turns out they accidentally have "/Abyss..." instead of "/abyss...". So the files are still available.

I'll scan the original retail box (the infamous one) and the updated retail box with Impel credits the next time I go to my rented storage I'll grab one.

If I recall correctly Quake was not called Quake in Germany as there was already another game by that name. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the ban.
