Darkplaces runs better with the textures that Baker has compressed. It also makes it look alot better (duh)

It also makes it look alot better16:03:04 <gb> when I put in a sng, I think I might need nails

Actually, no it doesn't. There's nothing inherently wrong with the way Quake is textured..."It's called being awesome, maybe you should try it." -Bank

Baker - I dont think Lardarse is addressing the retexture projects with that statement, merely Quake itself (which shy of Kedhrin and Randy's work, looks a LOT better than any of these texture packs Ive seen. Im also not a fan of using other games textures as a replacement). I could be wrong though, I guess I could ask Lardarse.
DarkPlaces does look good with textures - these shots are DarkPlaces with real time lighting enabled running Kedhrin's updated textures of the id texture set, making use of DarkPlaces texture rendering ability, namely reliefmapping, cubemapping, and many other things. The geometry in the maps has not been modified, all extra details are part of DPs texture rendering. Every groove in the wall, every spike in the iron, every skull in the stone, these are all just part of the original texture, no additional brush work was done for these screenshots.

Those certainly look a lot better than anything I've seen before.
The texture sets I have made employ some hi-tech trickery where I have written something to extract the actual ID textures from the applicable maps and then determine the best dimensions for the replacement textures and uses some other trickery to radically reduce the file size.
240 MB becomes 5 MB. I did this to several texture sets including Wood's CTF textures which was a 140 MB package and became 6 MB.
They load a heck of lot faster as well than the originals (the parent 24-bit set, that is. Not the textures in the maps).
Based on a lot of testing Yellow and I did before doing this idea, I did a lot of testing to see the effective appearance of 24 bit textures in various resolutions and as it turns out, much beyond 4 times the actual dimensions of the original ID textures cannot be distinguished except at FOV 10 at most resolutions so basically there was a lot of homework done for that project before and after we started doing it around this time last year.
Everyone who tried both has been very impressed by how much faster the textures load.
Lardarse's statement is factually correct as it applies to compression in general, but each of these special texture sets is more than meets the eye. They do load faster -- much faster, as FOQ-A and anyone else who has tried them can tell you.Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. I downloaded them, installed them, and then uninstalled them. And for your information, I was speaking about ALL texture sets, including the one before my post. Quake looks fine.
Dont question my credibility, unless you really hate your kneecaps."It's called being awesome, maybe you should try it." -Bank

To me it doesn't matter how someone likes Quake, old school or new school or something in between, but I like this better personally:
I wasn't questioning your credibility anymore than your agreement with Lardarse's incorrect assumption regarding these texture sets.
I agree that in some engines, Quake looks really good as-is.Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.
