I always hated the fact that you couldant actually FIGHT shub at the end in Quake SP.

Not knowing what the hell I'm supposed to be doing. I'm apparently someone other than a space marine on Phobos. It always seemed to just be a bunch of half-baked ideas thrown together to make a full game. I dont give a damn about story, but I at least expect that the game has SOMETHING to do with the paragraph or so they gave you in background info."It's called being awesome, maybe you should try it." -Bank

In the early versions of Quake, Quad was called Quake Power, and thus it is a safe assumption that quad damage is a runic power of sorts, akin to the runes you gather though nowhere near as strong. It is an artifact of the dimension you are in.
The id game and the expansions all speak of forces of Quake, it is generally assumed that Quake is pan-dimensional, whereas his minions are not. Shub is the link into this invasion, a general of this front of many battles. Chthon would be like Shub's right hand man type lava thing. The expansion packs regard Armagon, the Dragon, the Overlord, and others to be similar to Shub and Chthon, overseers of specific wings of Quake's war.
The original Quake concerns taking on a head general, Shub, who is spawning the hordes for an invasion on earth from 4 different planes. They invade through exploiting the slipgate technology and thus attack the 4 locations tied with slipgates (this could be presented much better, and thats a niggle I have with it). You start in the first attacked slipgate station, and use their open connection from which the invasion had begun (or was preparing to begin and they were establishing a front) to enter into their realm (Dimension of the Doomed, in the Castle of the Damned). In each realm there is a rune which contains power, but power that must be unified to be harnessed... as you procede from invasion point to invasion point, mounting a counter attack into each realm, you gather the runes, to combine their power strong enough to breakthrough Shub's initial protection and approach her in her pit.
The missionpacks detail smaller accounts of similar things, with less substantial leaders.
The entire storyline is strike back at the attackers, invading strange hostile worlds to obtain the necessary element and return until you have all the pieces to assault the orchestrator with any results.
What did I dislike about the game? The lack of bosses for episodes 2 and 3, though it can be argued vores are the bosses of episode 2. But the missionpacks provide for pretty good boss experiences. I also dont like that by the end of episode 1 youve encountered all but 1 of the weapons, and by the end of episode 2, all but 1 of the enemies =\
Quake is a hodgepodge. Its just a hodgepodge that I love.

Interestingly enough (you guys should know this) Quake was originally announced at the end of Commander Keen as:
"The Fight for Justice as a follow-up to the Keen trilogy. It would feature a character named Quake, "the strongest, most dangerous person on the continent", armed with thunderbolts and a "Ring of Regeneration." Bank - Yes, we did know that, I mentioned aspects of that in other thread which you fled, however as the design expanded they saw they would need true 3d to tell its story satisfactorily, and thus it was not done in the Keen or Doom engines.

If I picked something, I'd have to say the inconsistancy of the storyline:
You get the phone call at 4 a.m. By 5:30 you're in the secret installation. The commander explains tersely, "It's about the Slipgate devise. Once we perfect these, we'll be able to use them to transport people and cargo from one place to another instantly.
"An enemy, codenamed Quake, is using his own slipgates to insert death squads inside our bases to kill, steal, and kidnap...
"The hell of it is we have no idea there he's from. Our top scientists think Quake's not from Earth, but another dimension. They say Quake's preparing to unleash his real army, whatever that is.
"You're our best man. This is Operation Counterstrike and you're in charge. Find Quake, and stop him... or it... You have full authority to requisition anything you need. If the eggheads are right, all our lives are expendable..."
While scouting the neighborhood, you hear shots back at the base. Damn that Quake bastard works fast! He heard about Operation Counterstrike, and hit first. Racing back, you see the place is overrun. You are almost certainly the only survivor. Operation Counterstrike is over. Except for you.
You know that the heart of the installation holds a slipgate. Since Quake's killers came through, it is still set to his dimension. You can use it to get loose in his hometown. Maybe you can get to the asshole personally. You pump a round into your shotgun, and get moving.

Lake of respect - Poor newbie - Fock off TIcal (jk) - Superkicking
Playing Q1 and taling (chat) is really not appropriate cause most of Q1 players will just talkshit... I never really talked to a Q1 player for that good reason (why fight with words when I have my supernail gun hey).
Also, think for 1 sec about a newbie coming to a server (quake.shmack.net:26000 is a real good example)... How could this newbie would enjoy the game?? There is just no chance to win and the people (new) coming will get out fast for that good reason... give a chance to the newbie!!
Oups... the LLLPB !!! They really take the HPB ping (they come around... thats it your lagging like if you play from Mars). FO Tical (best example).
NO I FORGOT!!!!! WHAT I HATE MORE IS THE SUPERKICK OPTION... like jj is great for that at the phat server... it's the lowest of the lowest (cause your cpu will froze so FO phat boy)!
