Weapon choice and balance. That's what I like better in Strogg Wars. The DBS and NG should be stronger. Stuff like a pistol or a machinegun would be cool.
A berserk kit and fists like in DOOM.
Also, I could do without the satanic imagery. Not because I was christian (I am not), but when you are 30 it slowly starts to wear off.
Rotating brushes would be nice, too. Of course those are all minor concerns.
Give me the fists and shotgun from Doom, the pistol from Malice, the machinegun and chaingun from Strogg Wars, and the GL, RL and Shaft. Then I would be happy I guess.

Only thing about Quake that i hate is the fact that there arent more people playing it!
I miss the days when i had a spamm script that would connect to a server and reconnect , and reconnect and reconnect until i got connected

What do I hate about quake? The fact that its like 11 years old or something and not many people play it, the fact that the graphics suck, discharging, cheating and the fact that its just too fun and even though its so old you just can't quit playing it.

Cheating? Nobody cheats on Quake except once in a big fat great while. Don't beleave Surfer Girl or SurfsDamage, they are noobs. And they suck. Even Gunter can own them (Gunter's 56k)e|------------------------0---------------

Also about graphics, dood, have you tried Joequake, Qrack, Tremor, QMB, or DarkPlaces? They ALL have great effects and support textures that replace the old low-resolution ones. The textures include gun models, player models, monster models, pickips (health, powerups, ammo, etc) and structurs such as floors, walls, celings, buildings, and new water and lava and slime textures, and R00k solved the problem with there being no QMB flame effect, he added one in Qrack. You have absolutely no right to say the graphics suck without trying any advanced engines...e|------------------------0---------------

That would be a modern relevant complaint, the lack of players yes. I wholeheartedly yearn for the days of Gamespy returning at least 50 active servers with decent pings and good maps and players on them, for DM, TDM, 1on1, CTF, TF, RA and then myriad other mods like FVF and GRQ.

The story of Quake's pretty clear to me. They don't spoonfeed you anything at all but they let your imagination work. Some bad force from a nightmare dimension is using slipgates to invade Earth. Apparently they haven't actually gotten through yet, but they've got modified humans in there, and manage to kill everyone except for you. You fight your way out of the slipgate complex and into their dimension, pushing them back. You make it to Chthon, and you kill him, wondering if he's who's behind it. But he's only a pawn...
The threat isn't over so you make your way to other Earth bases as they are overrun and fight your way to the slipgate, and push yourself through other dimensions. Finally, the immediate threat on Earth is over and you have unlocked the way the Shub, who you assume to be the general. (And maybe Shub was waiting to be unlocked...)
That the powerups are artifacts of the nightmare dimensions makes perfect sense to me.
The start map is an odd thing, apparently some sort of dimension of itself with gates to places on Earth, and a hidden gate to Shub's lair. I think the progression to the base maps could have been done a bit better.
And as scar3crow said the lack of more bosses is too bad. The mission packs add entire new elements to Quake that are just as cool in some ways. And yeah, more weapons and better weapon balance would have been much welcomed.

Then all of a sudden it's Shub Niggurath and runes....almost like the above has little to do with the actual game.
The religious imagery wasn't necessary, considering the game doesn't take place in hell or apparently anything to do with world religions. I like the thought of it being completely unrelated to the words good or evil, instead consisting of something beyond human imagination. The satanic and pagan icons and symbols should've been replaced with strange recurring runes and such. The Jesus on the wall always made me kind of uncomfortable.
I think that maybe the ultimate manifestation of the Quake vision wasn't possible in 1996 (I think it's possible now, though, and I would want nothing more than a sequel). I love the map design, how nearly every surface is hard metal or sometimes stone, and it works perfectly with the old map format, but it would have been awesome if some surfaces were more dynamic, as if the nightmare dimensions are more than just physical planes. Unexplainable things happening, walls shifting and warping, shamblers passing through walls and stuff, weird organic formations consiting of the tortured and sewn together flesh of victims from different worlds, created as visual pleasure to the denizens of the nightmare dimensions.
I would've liked to see artificial intelligence and better damage response (starting with weapon/flesh impact sounds), and distinct differences in the monster's behaviour. The Shambler is the insane hulk, muscles eternally strained in endless pain lessened only when it kills, which it does with savage fury. The Shalrath is a malicious and arrogant being, seeing no other monster as its equal and ruthlessly commanding lesser forces, impossible to reason with and having a huge dark power which is only ever seen by those who make it truly angry. The tarbaby/Spawn is dark energy infused into dormant flesh, infusing it with an endless supply of manic physical energy - truly mindless, but set by their creator to attack a certain target. I would have loved to see spawns actually spawn off walls and such, kind of bubble out of things. The fiend is intense brawn, usually used by more intelligent forces to their whims. And so on.
