  • quakeworld.us goes down

    http://www.quakeworld.us/forum/viewtopic.php?t=248

The North American quakeworld site closes. :-(

I'm not American, but I visited them somewhat regularly because they had some good info. It's sad that another light goes out.

Let's all huddle and mourn together. And after that, go there and grab whatever useful bits there are before it vanishes.

Maybe in the future, someone should make complete archives of websites such as this. There is software which can do that.

one nice column on why Quake is great:

That's a shame to hear. I know STEEK put a lot into the site, and of course Ultimo did too. Every once in a while I play at the Nobody's Alternative FFA server and I know I've played with a good number of those guys before.

Ultimo put a lot of time and effort into maintaining servers and the site and trying to generate interest in QW in the USA.

And STEEK wrote a ton of columns and tried to get a lot of interesting discussion over there.

You know what, I think it's inevitable that we all join forces in the long run.

After Fuhquake went unmaintained, ezquake (and perhaps fte) is the one client that QWers use. Perhaps "our" developers (Joequake/Qrack/Darkplaces) should start implementing ezquake features in their clients to make them even more attractive to QW players (loc files, teamspeak, better spectating...).

And then there would need to be some kind of competitive environment to appeal to hardcore QWers, for example a ladder that runs the whole year. I think that's really what they want.

QuakeOne could set up one ladder for 1on1 and another for 4on4.

Normal Quake based of course (are there really any technical reasons to prefer QW servers?) but gameplay-wise very similar to QW.

Just some ideas. It would be nice to overcome the NQ/QW split eventually. And QW players could school all the runequake ppl in team deathmatch on dm3 *grin*.

I agree. The resources for Quake1 development are only going to dwindle over time.

Before I visited this site, I didn't even know there was a rift between the two "camps". I thought there was netquake and then it was replaced by quakeworld. For such similar games, it seems like a waste of talent to have separate communities and engines.

If they do fold in quakeworld features, please keep everything cross-platform. I'm currently porting some Quake utilities because they were written for Windows only.

It would be cool if they eliminated NetQuake and Quakeworld, made all servers compatible, and made Quake-NetWorld.

We are warring factions, I would personally not side with those Quakeworld Vermin. Glory to the Dominion! Let none stand in our way!

Really though, I dont "hate" Quakeworld, but I cant see any reason nowadays to use it.

                which utils and ported where?

Let's make a list of stuff that QW has and NQ doesn't.

Quakeworld players are welcomed here. They always have been.

Back in March or April, I invited STEEK over here to tell us about the USA Quakeworld scene and I was hoping those guys and us could have some games together.

I know some of them like CTF quite a bit and I think that the combined USA Quake + Quakeworld CTF player pool could have been enough to get some games going, maybe even a healthy rivalry.

In fact, it made me sad reading that post at Quakeworld.us because now it seems that is rather unlikely to happen.

more attractive to QW players (loc files, teamspeak, better spectating...)
ProQuake, which is STILL the dominant Quake client, has had loc support since 1999, I believe. I recently made some for the emerging popular maps (Sanity is so much fun).

Qrack has loc support. And any of our competitive mods already has a very nice chasecam system (CRMOD, CAx, Threewave CRCTF+).

And LordHavoc has indicated he's going to add loc support to DarkPlaces.

And then there would need to be some kind of competitive environment to appeal to hardcore QWers, for example a ladder that runs the whole year. I think that's really what they want.
The competitive environment is strengthening. I think everyone wants to see that.

We have to put our pants on 1 leg at a time and not get ahead of ourselves. We have to build infrastructure and get ppl trained and experienced. We already had a lot of that going into this, but we need more.

                          The utilities from here: http://user.tninet.se/~xir870k/

I've heard Bengt's utilities are the best. He was nice enough to provide me with a patch for malice and shrak so I'm porting the utilities.

I'm porting them to Linux initially. I would like to make more of them libraries with wrapper executables so people can create applications independent of the executables.

Yeah, we're very busy. The site has only been live since March and we have had an incredible amount of activity. It has been very nice and I think a lot of people have been affected by how much people still like this game.

Do you have any uncommon mods/files/maps/exe's? We'd be happy to stock things not readily available at other sites.

(Feel free to private message me, although I might not have time to get back to you until around tomorrow at this time. I have a project to wrap up.)
