You can start up X without a window manager (frees up some RAM and CPU) for when you want to just play quake.
hehe, I used to do that for wine games all the time. I had a script that also reniced wineserver and wine-preloader to -19. With some windows games, that gives it quite a boost.
you can even use your xorg.cfg to overclock your ramdac. =)
