  • "Player threatening to report GPL violation if he doesn't get QuakeC source code"

If I could direct everyones attention to the FvF forums for a moment. Recently, a new player at FvF, Juggernaut, threatened Gunter that he will report him if he does not release his source for FvF 2.09. Now QuakeC isn't even under GPL, is it?
Read the thread and post your comments here.

If FVF is a GPL'd mod then anyone is entitled to the source code IF a compiled progs.dat has been distributed.

It is very unlikely anyone is entitled to Gunter's source code. I don't think the FVF source code was GPL'd (I could be wrong).

But Gunter doesn't distribute his FVF stuff to anyone to my knowledge. So probably neither would apply.

The GPL can apply to QuakeC source code, an example is Rune Quake which is GPL. But even then, Slot Zero is only required to distribute the source to any changes he has released for distribution, so Slot Zero could decide to only use modifications he made himself and would never be required to release an updated source code.

Is this necessary? If that individual believes he is entitled to the source, even if he is mistaken, he should not be ridiculed.

Open source is good for Quake. In fact, it is the only reason we have any of the things we have.

                  You must scare easily

Haha, some of you guys are funny. Getting up worked up over words as if you've never been on a Quake server before. :d

Really what it comes down to is that the individual in question thought he was right. He wasn't, of course.

But you don't solve [most] problems by engaging in flame wars, you address the actual issue. In this case, the one individual sought to assert a right he happened to not have, but didn't know it. It's a mistake, not someone being "bad" intentionally.

When you react to something, you are ceding your behavior to someone else's actions.

quakeC source is not regulated under the GPL.

only the C engine source is..

                        Correct.

Though only cool people go open source with their mods. Or their mods of other peoples mods.

A more clear way of phrasing that is that ID Software's QuakeC source wasn't licensed under the GPL.

Gunter's Hub Mod QuakeC at hub.quakeone.com is GPL because it incorporates GPL code that FrikaC and MauveBib made (Tetris and Paqman). Gunter does not have to release his source because he does not distribute it, but he ever were to do so then someone would entitled to the source code.

There was an incident 3 years ago where Slot Zero demanded that IEEE 802.11 release the source to RQPlus (derivative work based on Rune Quake 0.5, which was GPL) and was distributed (it ran on at least 3 servers, none of which were IEEE's.)

RQuake is GPL because it was based on Rune Quake 1.0.

                          FVF never was GPL.

The one who started that thread didn't really understand what he read on Wikipedia. It sucks when that happens.

It takes a lot of reading to understand what things mean and -- well -- he wasn't right.

Even people that have been involved in the community have questions about these things, I read a post at Inside3D where someone wanted to understand whether or not the Quake maps were now free due to ID Software releasing the map sources.

The answer is that the maps aren't free, you aren't allowed to distribute either the textures nor the compiled maps, but you can compile new maps or even the source as-is provided it doesn't use ID's textures.

/For anyone who doesn't know, GPL = General Public License and is just a license agreement. With Quake, the GPL version = 2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Public_License
