    Atmosphere

It's the atmosphere of Quake 1 that made me collect hundreds of mods and models and textures. I guess I played'em all, but I still like it. It's the atmosphere of the game, the sounds, the colours, my imagination and the first shooter I ever played (it was together with Chasm, Hexen, Rise of the Triad, etc), but Quake remained in my mind more than 12 years.

I guess I know each and every texture by heart, I use to play occasionally quake just to wander around some maps. I played all recent maps that still retain the Quake's atmosphere.

I don't play that much nowadays, instead I'm working on a big project, total conversion, engine features, CSQC, new models, weapons and all. I call it the Quantum Project Engine, but a name for the game itself has not yet arisen in my mind.

I love Quake and I'm glad we have such a community, and I'm also glad I see new people (though not that often) popping in in the community trying to learn more about modifications.

Indeed the game is heavily modifiable, and C is easy to pick up, but it's more about this game than that.

We all have rich imagination, alternate worlds inside our heads, invisible friends, dreams, and whatnot. And we transpose them inside Quake by maps, models and textures.

I guess that could summarize it best for me.

      That.

No one makes custom maps for other games. Well maybe like 1 or 2, it's nothing to write home about.

I like Quake multiplayer as well (but I'm very picky about what I like).

It's just an incredible open-ended game.

Welcome to the land of the people who post stuff, Chip Saving those PQ sites had to have been a lot of work.

            Thanks

Thanks Baker, it took a while, but I was determined to do it. No time to finish the whole site though, maybe next year.

Now, I'm off to make a coop multiplayer run-through with my business partner, for ol' times sakes. Nightmare. I wish there was an impossible difficulty level. It's becoming too easy.

There is something to be said for resolve.

              Seriously.

If there is anything I have learned is that determination is everything. And all the people that have helped make Quake a better place, it always required a lot of determination (Spirit's single player archive comes to mind as a good recent example).

One of them. Descent is generally said to be the first one, although there's another one that shouldn't be forgotten:

Preliminary work on Tomb Raider commenced in 1993, but it was not until November 1996 that the game actually saw the light of day as a retail product.
TR was already fully 3D. It had transparency, rotation of whole rooms even, moving water, and tons of other stuff. Not to mention outstanding level design throughout.

                I also like this:

Upon its release in 1996, Tomb Raider was widely praised by gaming magazines for its revolutionary graphics, inventive gameplay, and involving storyline.[19][20] The level of sophistication Tomb Raider reached by combining state-of-the-art graphics, an atmospheric soundtrack, and a cinematic approach to gameplay was at the time unprecedented.
                because it's true.

Quake1 reserves the title of the first true 3d enviroment and use of 3d models in a first person shooter.
Descent was a space shooter, and Tomb Raider was OTS. Not quite the same category, but great mentions none the less!

TR may have been a 3D environment, but in terms of where you could go in that environment it had more in common with Doom and was actually more like 2.666D. Plenty of tech specs online if you want to double-check that. Quake (and likely Descent although I never really played it) was the Real Thing.

The big deal with Quake was that it was the one that brought everything together for the first time: immersive 3D, user-modifiable content, the dawn of 3D acceleration, getting off the DOS platform, internet gameplay, etc etc etc.

                      You really hate quakes' gameplay.

And saying Quake didn't have good level design is just crap.

If my memory isn't failing, TR was also one of the pioneers of 3d acceleration. It had a special Matrox Mystique accel. version. I remember playing it in that nice hi-res with Matrox logo on launch. Although no texture filtering.

And yeah, Descent was great too. Anyone still enjoying it thru D2X-XL?

No, I don't really hate Quake's gameplay, I just personally want it expanded with some other things. I never said that Quake has bad level design - saying "Game X has great level design" is not the same as saying "Quake has bad level design".

mh, no, I'll readily believe that. No problem. ;-)

By now, I could put a counter in my sig that says "Accused of killing/hating etc. Quake X times", although that would only be funny for a short while. Can't be bothered really.

Fuck, fuck, fuck. I started messing around with RAMdisc software and apprantly boogered my XP install by messing with temp file directory settings. I came home to a bluescreen one day and immediately began the task of putting Windows 7 on my desktop. The only problem is: I forgot to backup my Quake folder. I lost everything Quake-related. Now I have a bunch of shit to dig for. Again. FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuuu
