Atmosphere
It's the atmosphere of Quake 1 that made me collect hundreds of mods and models and textures. I guess I played'em all, but I still like it. It's the atmosphere of the game, the sounds, the colours, my imagination and the first shooter I ever played (it was together with Chasm, Hexen, Rise of the Triad, etc), but Quake remained in my mind more than 12 years.
I guess I know each and every texture by heart, I use to play occasionally quake just to wander around some maps. I played all recent maps that still retain the Quake's atmosphere.
I don't play that much nowadays, instead I'm working on a big project, total conversion, engine features, CSQC, new models, weapons and all. I call it the Quantum Project Engine, but a name for the game itself has not yet arisen in my mind.
I love Quake and I'm glad we have such a community, and I'm also glad I see new people (though not that often) popping in in the community trying to learn more about modifications.
Indeed the game is heavily modifiable, and C is easy to pick up, but it's more about this game than that.
We all have rich imagination, alternate worlds inside our heads, invisible friends, dreams, and whatnot. And we transpose them inside Quake by maps, models and textures.
I guess that could summarize it best for me.
