  • Petition to get John Carmack to play a game of Q1

    Here we go!

I started this partition to get the man himself to play a game or two with the community he started when he created Quake!

I wanna see what you would think about John Carmack frag'n it up with the rest of us for old time sake! We could make a demo of the true Quake God. This itself would educate people about Quake1! possible even push people to either start playing or get oldies to come back!

So what do you think Yea or Nea?

I'm familiar with the name although I can't quite remember how he acted or what not. In any case, if it promotes Q1, go for it.

          It would be cool.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

I think that Romero would be more likely to play Quake as part of the Community than Carmack would.

Remember that Romero actually still plays Quake...

16:03:30 <gb> the fact that only playtesting tells me that probably means that my mind is a sieve

From what I read, Carmack doesn't really like to openly talk to people. However, I think to move forward that sometimes you have to take a step back and it would be a great idea to grab him for a game even if he just rides. I've written him once and he responded kindly. Now I'm trying to dig out that old email to get an address unless someone already has it?

Carmack didn't create Quake. Romero created Quake. Romero is Quake.

Personally I'm not a fan of Carmack, always saw him as a bit of a twig with glasses that spits out mathematical equations.

Quake cant be equalized to any individual entity or human being, what do you consider Quake's father/mother to be? The one who setup the physics of gameplay? The one who created the maps? The one who created the weapons? The one who created its monsters? If anything , Quake will find the most support on a "HYPED" level from iD Software as a whole, not any one person.

                        great idea regaurdless

Not to fan the flames, but Romero got kicked out of id after Quake because he wasn't pulling his weight, right? The majority of code was written by Carmack. So how would Quake = Romero?

Romero is much more likely to respond to this sort of invite, anyway. He was always a lot more involved in the community. He did a shotgun-only run through Doom E1 with commentary, although that was many years ago now...

Maybe because without Romero Quake would be nothing like what it is today. Carmack merely took Romero's groundbreaking ideas and made them happen. He did a good job, but code doesn't = game. It's all about concept.

You might want to pick up a copy of Masters of Doom by David Kushner, pretty much goes over everything that happened at id and ion storm from Romero's first apple II games to Ion Storm's Daikatana.
