Looking at the credits for any id game will not give a complete picture, due to their (at least at the time) practice of not giving someone multiple billing. Romero did a LOT of maps, some qc, the tools, some sound effects... I would link Quake to Romero more than I would Carmack. I link the engine to Carmack, I link the game to Romero and Peterson mostly, and then McGee and then Willits.

Granted we dont have a design doc to point to and an author for it to say "It was x's vision!" because Quake is a wonderful accident of sorts.

Especially after reading that book you should be aware of the significant role of people like Sandy Petersen and Adrian Carmack.

        So very true!

I have to say, I am utterly amazed sometimes with Quake in a way that sometimes I feel if I think about the improbability of this game too hard that the game will cease to exist.

It does not even have a genre! Doom = sci-fi. Half-Life = slight sci-fi. Duke Nukem = populist alien invasion theme. Blood = horror. As you can tell I'm thinking of the games released around that period of time and slightly after.

It blows my mind that something as ugly as Quake with no genre that would seemingly even appeal to a wide audience would even be made.

Anyone can design a house or a building but it takes a true architect to tell you if it can be done and lay out the floor plan. The two work hand in hand and I'm sure alot of changes had to be made because the coding and engine format that was available then wasn't up to par with a pending deadline. You can design all the web pages you want but without proper coding you can't get it to work. Coding, Planning and Design work hand in hand from Books to Buildings to Gaming. It's rare to find a designer who can do it all.

Read it a couple of times, it's a fascinating book. As I recall, Romero's epic fantasy design for Quake went out the window, in favour of one that took advantage of Carmack's engine.

who cares, its always Quake > "Input Name"

You can argue til your blue in the face, its nice all the above mentioned names put in atleast some time and effort to create this game Quake , but in the end, if any of them would ever create a resume to get a job else where, one of their top 3 listed games they took part in would be Quake, hence, Quake > "insert name" .
