Rage, why the hell do people play there?

Seriously, why do people flock to that server? It is laggy as hell, and the server itself is slow. A 70 ping on it, gives the feel of a 160 ping. I just dont get it, there are much better servers in ca, but people play at rage? What the hell for.

I'm going to get Bomber's maps integrated into Dredd soon

for those who don't know. Rage is using the now deceased Bomber server's maps which only 4% ever see the light of day. Dredd will have MANY of the popular maps in rotation offering fresh gameplay and not the same old stagnant experience Rage gives you

/I didn't notice that I do lag a tiny a bit @ Rage until the Dredd server came out. Both are in the same city, Dallas Texas, and I get 60-70 ping on both, but at Dredd it more feels like 30-40 somehow. Go figure. I don't mind my connection on Rage, but just something weird I noticed and I'm not the only one who has said this either.

Rage seem'd like an excellent server for a bit. Then somehow it rapidly decreased in leetness. Me personally with my sub 20 ping at both servers can say Rage feels like I'm running on a beach in hightops while Dredd feels like im running on firm cement. My Rage ping feels around 40-50 while I dont really notice my ping at Dredd.

Some dude named Sunshine on IRC was nagging yesterday about how much he hates Dredd because "If you don't play DM3 then that means you're not good at it and therefore are not good at Quake...." and so on.

Look, I'll play at Rage, I don't have a problem with it, but DM3 is not life. It is not a requirement to be a master of DM3 in order to be a great Quake Player. As a matter of fact, this same dude was saying that "All of dredd's custom maps are gay and the people that play there are newbs."

In any event, those of us that play at Dredd will agree with me that there's life outside of DM3. Custom maps are much more fun because you aren't as able to predict an opponent's movement as you are on DM3, which makes the game less repetitive and more fun. Plus the map rotation makes playing on Dredd even more interesting.

Im in Western Pa. I ping 70-90 to rage, yet it feels like a 170 ping, and the time it takes to fire a shot is simply ridiculous, Dredd I ping 70-90, but it feels like 70-90. Dont matter really, I'm done with rage, servers already removed from my server listings :d

That to me is the call of the inflexible and ultimately inept player. DM3 is not the only map by any means, and if you can't play DM3 but are competent at other maps - then that probably means your style is different and are no worse the player.

It is easy to get map centric. I 1v1ed monster on dm6 all the time, sometimes I would come close, but he would pretty much always win. So I changed it to dm4, and it wasnt until about 25 frags in that he started to pose a serious threat to me. His skill was map dependant. He was great at dm6, moderate to average at dm4.

If your skill is locked to a map, you're actively NOT good at Quake, you are good at that map. Quake is bigger than The Abandoned Base.

I believe Dredd is running on superior hardware then Rage. Dredd's host (Fat Pipe Servers) is a dedicated group of gamers also

You should ping well, I'd think, at the rum.quakeone.com CA server located in Georgia and maybe ping well @ the bogo.quakeone.com in New York.

I think it's best to promote your favorite server, and then positively promote your likes of gamestyle and map choice. Bitching only wastes time arguing about opinions, where as posting about whats cool makes others question their choice compared to yours. i'd much easily dispose an opinion if it was put forth in a positive manner. "I love my 1966 chevy c-10 shortbed with rebuild engine", and your thinking great i have a 2007 BMW.. Where as if i said omfg bmw sucks I like my ford escape! You'd quickly retort f*ck off yadda yadda ...

Basically find a server that pings well for you, and then ask the admin to set options that you prefer. If the majority concurrs then he might adhere. Complaints will fall flat, where suggestions will always rise to eye level.

Everyone has their preference,and to talk shit about someone else's preferences when the conflict with yours is quite childish.

Rage is an excellent server,Dredd is an excellent server, in my eyes Rum is a better server because I ping the lowest there,but over half of the CA community like things how they are,which is playing DM3.If you dont like DM3,now you have many alternatives to that (Rage isnt one of them,obviously).
r00k is right, promote your server in a positive way.If this continue's to be "my opinion > your opinion" .... your more liable to push people away before bring them in...

And as for the "Map based skill" , thats ridiculous,unless your a doorway spammer. Aim is aim, If you have good aim,you have good aim. I'll play just as good on 1-1 on any CAx map (except Aerowalk,its a Tele-gay-athon) as DM3.

Now days,most of the CA community isnt "since CA came out" type of community,so this whole "Dm3 only people suck" is ludacris talk, because most CA players come from other forms of Quake...
