  • Adult Quake: The Coming of Dredd

**** This news item is nowhere affiliated with any disputes/debates that are currently going on based on any kind of issues that lie within these forums or among users on the forums. This interview was thought up on my own prior to reading any possible scenarios that could/seem to be brother/sister to this posting. Don't fuck with my post, please. This same post will be on the www.planetquake.com news articles in the Quake 1 section. This is solely to improve the player databse of quake / servers. Again, please don't fuck with my post.****

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Someone once said, It is in the ability to open our eyes and minds where limitless wonders are discovered. This quote holds true to my opinion of the latest gaming server, Dredd. Rather, this quote holds true to what is left of the quake community. There are some of us who just wont let the game die, who refuse to believe it is dead, because lets face it, its alive. Quake still has a strong heartbeat, and with the players that are here today, in 2007, and Quake has just got another beat, coming straight from Texas at Dredd.quakeone.com.

Dredd is the latest in additions to upcoming Cax servers. The benefits of it are extremely embraced by a large portion of the Quake community. With auto rotation, mvp reporting of each round, and a selection of maps that would confuse Chuck Norris, Dredd has made its face known and is smiling more than ever.

Thought up by Phenom/Baker equally, Id personally like to thank them on behalf of the community for this addition. Today I got a chance to sit down with Phenom and decided Id ask some questions concerning it.

    (Frenzy) evening sir

    (Phenom) evening

(Frenzy) This may be an obvious answer type of question, but what sparked the idea about Dredd between you and Baker?

(Phenom) Basically, how the idea started was a request from the Quake 1 community asking that they thought about creating a server that kind of 'pushed' a new view on Quake 1 by implementing all new custom maps and removing anything that would resemble the old feel of CA Dm6,DM3,Dm4 etc . This would also push for new skills to be developed and new strategies in teamgames etc

    (Frenzy) Is it working?

(Phenom) Dredd's current state is actually showing that it's intuitive game play even though its still Clan Arena that the chosen custom maps definitely spark a flare for many of the standard CA DM3 players, some of them treat it like they have seen the light and don't play at CA servers that dont offer map rotation, custom maps or the admin free feel of Dredd. Also using the custom maps I think keeps people's minds always working so they don't have time to sit and think so its a nonstop game of What will happen next? , and while the higher skilled players will definitely have an advantage it still is a new experience to almost everyone.

(Frenzy) I recently had a discussion with Baker, in this I brought up an idea: to have each map play 3 times, then the auto rotation. Clans see this as a positive possible addition to the server, bringing a new kind of challenge to the server, is this a future possiblity? I think I speak for most clans that this would be a great addition as soon as possible

(Phenom) I think your idea is excellent. Currently R00k is working on coding this into the mod for dredd.

(Frenzy) For those new players, that don't really know what the fuss of DM3 is about, the ones who could be reading this, could you explain it to them and explain to them why DM3 is nowhere to be found on Dredd?

(Phenom) Dredd is a very flexible newbie friendly server. That doesn't mean that skilled players have an easy time because the Dredd's current player base is a mash of players from newbie to veteran. Dm3 is one of the best maps made by ID Software for Quake 1 death match & Clan Arena and while Dredd doesn't offer DM3 exclusively it does offer a DM3again rendition created Quake communities's Zop & Frenzy which supports much more variations in game play. Standard DM3 is also not needed dew to there already being a CAx server that essentially runs DM3 24/7. So to Dredd DM3 is not a big factor in fun. Quake 1 should be fun because of the interaction with other people, not simply with 1 map. I've heard people say DM3 IS Clan Arena. I believe these people play Quake 1 simply because they are bored and do not know how to spend their time. These arent true Quakers at heart they just want to play a game. Cheers to them but a True Quaker frags through rain sleet snow or wind.

(Frenzy) I think I'm gonna wrap this up because you're nailing everything, anything you'd like to say to the community out there?

(Frenzy) Why should we play at Dredd? Convince me.

(Phenom) Playing at Dredd is like going back in time to the first time you played Quake online (1996 for most of us) it somehow captures the magic that was there but gives you the knowledge of what you know now. You get the best of both worlds, a MOD you love and the feeling of something new. Dredd is in my view and many other old school players s view what Clan Arena's next big step is. I don't consider Dredd to be the final word in Clan Arena. I consider it to be the beginning.

(Frenzy) I'm convinced. See you at dredd.quakeone.com, shall we?

    (Phenom> I'm on it

I guess those who enjoyed playing Start in DM/IHOC/RQ, or E4M3 in PUB CTF/3wave over and over are real quakers either. This is just a Dredd>Rage veiwpoint with a more positive outlook on things, and less of the previous style of Anti-Rage shit talking style promotion of Dredd. Thats great stuff!!! I'm glad to see a more positive method of promoting Dredd, but I still see moments of the whole "Rage Sucks" attitude in underlying messages during this interview, but a noble attempt, and a much better attitude over all.

This is NOT a comparison of servers whatsoever. And please do not make this thread concerning it as one. I've helped promote rage just as much in the past, so please, don't categorize my interview. Thanks.

Good interview Frenzy. Hopefully this sparks some more interest in Dredd and increases the player base for the server.

From what I've heard, there are 50 maps in the rotation.
Piece of advice, if you want to make me and a few others come, you might want to narrow it down to about a 10 map rotation of the best 10 maps.
Getting familiarized with over 50 maps is difficult and for new DREDD players does not give a chance to learn the map fully.

A successful map rotation would help new players get accustomed, and later on once you've built a consistent player base you can extend it, but there is no reason why 50 maps should be played.

Ok, as I had stated on the initial post of the thread, this would also show it's face on planetquake.com, if you feel like taking a look at it (not that it's much different than this), go ahead and take a peak, the link is:

              Quake Community Buzz: Phenom
              http://planetquake.gamespy.com/quake1/

And in response to your post Rampage, let me clarify a bit because there seems to be just a bit of a misunderstanding. Dredd currently has 36 maps in the rotation. This really makes it no different from how Quake was originally ran. Personally, when I questioned Phenom on how many maps the server had in it's auto rotation, I didn't even realize there were 36 and I play on the server daily. You don't really realize there are that many, you are just happy to play different/more maps rather than a repetitive kind of thing based on many other servers.

Also, Dredd is still more or less in it's "beginning" stages, rather than think negatively of the map rotation, feel free to connect and play some of the maps. Input is greatly appreciated among the administration at Dredd, and I feel that you, especially, would have some great input due to your experience in the game and your established status.

Maps are also skipped, this is one of the ways of learning/filtering out what the playerbase wants seen in the rotation. All 36 rarely get played, but having the option is great. Nextmap is the command to start the vote for a jump to the next map.

Thanks for your input Rampage it is appreciated, and I hope to see you on the server.

Yeah, I am actually surprised to find out that there are 36 maps in the rotation. I play there pretty often and to me it feels like there are around 15. There is however 1 map tat we always skip and noone really likes it. I would like to see that 1 map removed from the rotation. It's been a week or so since I wanted to talk to Phen about that. Other than that Frenzy is right. When people don't want to play any particular map they just skip it Sometimes they don't feel like playing it at the moment or maybe it's just too small or too big for the amount of peolple playing.

TAXI, yes, very true, responding to your response, to my response, about my statement, about the map rotation. Confused yet?

Anyways it gives the OPTION to play more maps, but they are not all always played. And it's not like people sit AFK or you can't skip to the next map, it's a click click boom type of effect, and the server runs great like this.

Thanks for your response TAXI, your input is appreciated.

I like playing new maps that are great. The downside of a rotating map rotation is that you may not like every map (I don't) but the upside is that you only have to sit thru that for a single game.

If I really don't like a map, sometimes I just type AFK in the console and take a break You can also type "NEXTMAP" in the console to initiate a vote to change the map.

Ah, yes, Baker you bring up a great point. A downside to dredd: who'd of thought? But the input sparks a nice thought, what do you the one reading this, think are some of the downsides of dredd? And I'm asking for logical answers here, not a big shout match and insults. Input is what makes a server a server, and a player base an awesome atmosphere to be around, lets face it.

                        Input please?

                        Thanks Baker Play on Playa

I see small downsides to Dredd, they are very far and few most of them just being already mentioned improvements such as (maps play 3x before rotating) + (removing the maps that everyone votes to 'skip'' from the map rotation. Other then that there really isn't to much of a downside to anything. I've been trying to not bother R00k to much, he deserves a break instead of having someone constantly telling him to fix stuff, I understand he must have a life to live too

Personally I believe R00k, Baker & everyone who gave their positive input and who seen something good in Dredd including myself ended up making a pretty nice server with a definite fun factor which also could easily run free of admins needing to be present constantly to watch and make sure players don't act up.

I even seen Vibe on Dredd earlier playing like a regular player, no BS from Vibe and me which is REALLY a weird thing. Like I said I want to give EVERYONE a fresh start at Dredd so they can come to play a server that cuts a lot of the BS that made CA servers in the past fail or turn into a flamer server. This isn't saying all CA servers are are a failed experiment or a flamewar, there are definitely great servers out there like the up coming bogo.quakeone.com server which even though it currently uses DM3 exclusively its ment to be a hybrid between Rage and Dredd meaning using both Rage's and Dredd's map packs and including rotation. This is a great idea and I really hope things go well for Bogo

In the end I'm just glad that I got the support I've got when it comes to Bomber.ironrocket.com not to be confused with bomber.quakeone.com or rage.quakeone.com but the original Bomber that was the foundation to get CAX off and runnin in a stable state. I couldn't have made Bomber without the community and Dredd would be nowhere if I didn't have the support of some really awesome people here at Quakeone.com. Thank you all for your help!

                          P.S
Instead of acting sneaky and editing my post to slip someone else in there. Its obvious but Frenzy has played a MAJOR roll in Dredd's success. He is also well known for his completely optimistic outlook on things and only does whats is right for the community, he's a man of the people. Thanks to you also Frenzy!

every map played 3 times is good, however yes/no vote at the end of every map would be easier I think (next map? YES/NO). 3 times the map is good too though + ppl can always "nextmap" it.
