I was pretty sure he was attempting this in singleplayer. I think Darkplaces can do the vis'ed data for maps during load time, thus you dont need to to vis them yourself. r_novis renders the world entire world (even beyond the water planes), without it in normal quake your gonna get a weird effect. Sure r_novis eat up fps when everyone had a pentiumII 300mhz using a 3dfx 2000 card, but now adays i still get >100fps on my puny 2ghz AMD with a moderate Geforce card.

For online play the server has to have the vised maps. but i dont think u have to have the server running r_novis 1 as I dont have this set for crctf.clanhdz.com, and all L.O.C. maps are vis'ed and work with r_novis 1 on the clients. Even toilet4.bsp is vise'd btw

I just tried this. OMG! It's true.

      Unbelievable

I got it thanks. I don't want to make another thread so I'll ask another question here, where exactly do i unzip the masque of the red death map to play it? I have darkplaces installed which is one of the compatible clients, but in which folder do I unzip the files? Tanks in advance.

if its just a map, unzip it to quake/id1/maps if you dont have a maps folder under /id1 just create it. By putting all your custom maps in that folder, all your other mods will find it too.

Alright I did that, and I put in the command line for darkplaces which was

C:\QUAKE\darkplaces.exe -width 640 -height 480 -hipnotic -game masque +map masque

It boots up, but it's like nothing happened and the regular single player starts up. Do I access it through the console?

Sounds like its just not catching the map parameter in the command line, so yeah, give the console a try with 'map masque'
If it can't find the map, make sure you've got the pak (iirc it uses a pak) in the folder masque.

Some newers versions of MHquake engine can fix the water visings on-the-fly.
So If you dont want DarkPlaces, but want watervised maps with the original id maps untouched, you can use MHquake.

I guest you already know, but theres a patch to watervis all Id maps.
